Side Quest Tracking Mechanic Possibilites

How should Optional Quests be handled?

  1. Seek out and complete the same way as Main Quests?

    20.0%
  2. Receive by strolling by the giver, auto-saving to quest log?

    80.0%

Perhaps, bretheren, Sidequests are simply overheard, like in mass effect, and so if you coincidentally find the side-quest's required part, piece, or resource, it can be delivered like a "Helping Hand" sort of thing.

This silly little comic can illustrate.

WOOPS! I think this MAY belong in the mechanics suggestion thread. -covers face in embarassment-

Unless of course, you want to add in the quests in the comic, I.E., Shrubberies and Heating Units.

No, I'm sure this is fine in the Side Quest section. And you need a much better thread title, as I was about to have a go at you for suggesting that the game should have side quests, when it already has.

Anyway, I guess this is a good idea. If there are NPC conversations, this could make good use of it.

Oh yeah, I like VG Cats as well.

Thank you for being the good kind of internet person and taking the time to read the post, not just the title. No Seriously! :D

I think receiving the quest by strolling by it is way better. This whole "Hey you look like a hero so here I got a quest for you"-thing is just silly. You wouldn't just give a random person you just met a quest that is kind of important to you and basically just trust him to do this thing for you.

Perhaps you have to find quests by yourself first, and once you get to know that npc, they will actually ask you stuff directly. Seems logical. Perhaps you can also get a reputation that makes npcs from systems near where you did enough quests ask you stuff directly too.

Why the necro if you say its useless? Let other threads live...

If they were going to implement this, they would have already. But also since it's my thread, SPACE

Please don't necro threads if you don't have anything to add to the discussion. It doesn't matter if it's your thread or not.

Keep in mind that they will be releasing additional content post-release, so you never know. If all else fails, there are always mods.

Also, now that I'm a mod, would you like that thread title change that I mentioned yonks ago?

This doesn't seem like a useless suggestion.

As of the current updates, you can overhear conversations by NPCs. They also have a quest system in place that shows the quest objective and rewards and such. What makes this suggestion unique is that is bridges the gap between the two features. For example, you could be running along through a town and notice two NPCs chatting about something that "nearly killed her husband" or something that "had huge teeth" and so-on. This draws attention to them, letting the player know that they might offer a quest IF the player goes to them and talks to the NPC. When you talk to them, they might say "oh, you heard? yes, it's awful what happened to what's-her-name's husband. That awful beast ought to be hunted down and..." etc... At that point, the quest window thing pops up and gives you the option of accepting/rejecting the quest outside of the actual conversation, and the villager doesn't directly request that you undertake the quest. They were just making conversation.

This would actually be useful in helping you notice NPCs who offer quests apart from normal ones, and it would also be a more entertaining and fluid way of interacting with NPCs when you are thinking about taking on a sidequest. I like both of those things, so I support the idea.

..... I dont understand what "Necro a thread" means, but I guess it's the same as 'bumping' a stale one? I was feeling random and decided to post a picture of space in the starbound thread I put in.... But if that's not okay and people cant navigate forums to find their own if it's not the first one on the list then I guess I'll stop posting on this thread when it hasnt had any activity. xD

    But in response to DeadlyLuvDisc,

I believe that a sidequest mechanic like that would improve fluidity immensely. It is clunky and awfully cliche'-Mmorpg-like (I.E. WoW, Everquest, etc.) to have to seek out troubled-folks with an exclamation point over them to hunt down their a's b's and c's. If it was more realistic in the sense that people who are in trouble might be apprehensive, possibly even slightly resistant to letting a stranger help, and somehow making that stranger prove his/herself before allowing them in on what has been troubling them would be a much more in-depth experience and allow the player to feel more immersed in the starbound universe.

Guild Wars 2 took a different approach to side-quests and area-quests by simply giving you the quest as you passed through the related area and if you assisted you got rewarded. It seems to have worked for them, but in our case it's a little different.

Mass Effect, and it's associated series took the side-quest system to sort of a "investigator's notepad" level where you would overhear something and it would be jotted down in your journal. Very seamless, though, at times, harder to track.

Though I'm certain the Starbound team has a quest-tracker system implemented.

Necroing a thread is like bumping, except more severe. Such as if the thread is months, possibly even a year or more, old. It's generally considered to be quite rude, and we only accept it if the thread is still relevant and the necro continues the discussion. "Feeling random" and posting off-topic like that isn't a valid excuse for a necro. If all you wanted to do is find your thread, you could have checked your post history. There is an entire list of threads posted by none other than you.

But, since DeadlyLuvdisc has saved the topic from derailment, and the suggestion is still viable, this thread should be fine for now. Just be aware of necros now, and try to avoid them where you can.

I believe space is very relevant in the context of starbound. But message received.
