I quite like this idea, but I feel that if there was a map system you should have to go to the surface to map it out by exploring it, then bring it back to the ship to perhaps pop up a GUI that will let you pick a spot to beam down to.

    that could work

I wonder how many people are going to press 'M' after the next update? :rainbow:

I've started getting quite used to not having a map now. Since all I do is build Hellavators from my beam spots and strip the surfaces of each planet for wood and fibres whilst searching for interesting buildings/chests. :alien:

A map to let senile old guys like me find the way home while playing, or to find where my son is digging atm..Yes a map please, I was surprised that there was no map ingame actually, or at least a "mini map" to track your position.
I came from Terraria to Starbound so I'm a bit spoiled I guess. Still would like to see it ingame. Good job so far though. =)

I would like a map, a map that is black when you land on a given planet and fills in as you explore but more than that. We have been presented with the illusion of a spherical -or at least circular world- and I would like the map to reflect this it will take a little more work on the Devs side of things I know but how cool would THIS be - http://i.imgur.com/dhre9Uu.jpg -?? and yes I realise there will be issues with blocks Narrowing as you get closer to the core of the planet... but there are a couple of way either around or to deal with this:

    1) the world generated could rather than a rectangle be a Trapezoid with two equal pairs of angles this would account for the "Narrowing" of the world as you get deeper (Which would look something like this: http://i.imgur.com/7av9dbA.jpg)

    or

    2) we could just shrink the players location Icon as you get deeper ignoring that the circumference of the core of the planet is = to the circumference of the surface of the planet.

Either way I think that a circular map would be a unique and cool way of displaying the worlds we visit.

I think it would be handy if you could craft a tool that would save a map of tunnels you pass through

In the absence of being able to beam aboard your ship from underground, it would make navigating back to the surface much more tolerable

I would like a map. But I would like it only to show where I have been with the rest of the planet fogged out.

Kind of like that other, similar game: the only thing to show up on the map are things that have already been seen, and only at the brightness level at which they have been seen.

Personally I would like a sort of journal attached to the ship that is edited by the player that doesn't save all the information by itself but has a template.
    What I mean:

Add a feature to the ship that you can interact with and add entries into.
The Planet Template: X/Y Coordinate, Biome, Level, Free.
Each space with a text box that is free to edit, free to make error and free to do as you will with without having to use a physical reference or have the whole space exploring aspect streamlined into an easy "bookmark, star, or tag" world button.

It could be interesting for someone who wanted to keep track of multiple worlds that are similar in appearance by having a free space to give a description of each planet as they will.

There could potentially be other templates for features as well.

Being able to craft an exploration style toolkit (beginning with, say, a compass) and scaling up over the different sci fi tech elements would be great, and would certainly fit with the theme of the game.

So your ultimate explorer character would be decked out with GPS, laser mapping drones (make it a pet that automatically maps around you, highlights ores etc.), a full indexing and bookmarking system for the navigation software on your ship ... and so on and so forth.

id like some sort of map, simply because sometimes i cant find my way out of an hour or 2 mining session :D i dont think it should be given of the bat tho, maybe have some sort of scanner on the ship and have to feed it say 500 fibre for a map of the planet below, then the map has "fog of war" so u can only reveal areas of the map you have explored

It's not that people are lazy, it's that the starmap controls aren't well-explained in-game. If the zoom-out control is listed in the controls (or anywhere in-game, for that matter), then I've missed it -- I only found out about it after seeing people mention it here in the forums.

I really like the idea of being able to craft a high-tech scanner drone (have it fill one of the 'pet' slots) or whatever that follows you around, creates a map of the area you've explored (accessible by using E on the drone, say) and maybe highlights ore nodes that are on the same screen as you.

This is a sci-fi game - I'd love for the later game elements to reflect that. Things like being able to convert the matter manipulator with additional features, increased speed, etc. Mapping drones, combat drones, shield drones, inventory drones ... whatever.

    Drones.

As I've mentioned in other threads, I'd like to be able to generate a surface map. Just a basic one showing off the shape of the planet without a great deal of detail or materials (More like a sonar scan than a satelite photograph)

I would prefer a grid and coordinate system.

That might be a cool intermediary step, in-between no map at all and the full laser-scanning drone magic stuff that I keep banging on about.

On the to do list posted 16 Dec. Yeey =)

"Mini-Map: Rotating circular map showing highlights only such as the location of friendly players, spawn points–but no major details. For the details you’d use a mapping item to create a map as you travel."
