Should we better justify starting with nothing?

Well the Floran just stole technology so they just skipped the crafting steps. And the other races their ships are not made for crafting or terraforming or anything.

For example the apex fled on a miniknog military ship. That's not supposed to go to a planet and build a home.
Humans though ... they actually fled from earth and want to settle on a suitable planet so yeah, I got nothing there ...

I'm just having flashbacks to suggestions on the minecraft forum for a bunch of mechanics that would be at the beggining of the game- stuff like "You can't punch wood, but you can get sticks from leaves" which would slow down the start of the game a lot, but wouldn't add anything to the meat of the game. In general, this feels obstructionist to me. Sure, a game where you are scavanging parts to fix your ship sounds fun. I've played a variety of games like that. But that isn't the point of starbound, and it would just be adding more delays to getting into the meat when you start a new character

Uh....the delay already exists. You don't seem to have understood, this is an idea for putting what you're already doing into a thematic framework that both justifies the low level progression, and instantly encouraging new players and returning players to start playing around with the walls and look of their home base before reaching the explosion of options the later game will eventually open up.

Nonesense. You can be off the started planet in under 5 minutes and start zooming around to explore. This is the difference between "Let put some gas in" and "Let me manually rebuild the frame"

Sorry I guess if I don't agree with you that makes me a child. You go straight to name calling when I did not directly insult anyone interesting.

I think your mannerism incurred his/her response. Stating that you disagree and why rather than a "Great this again....." would have netted you a better response. Anyways...

I like this idea, but the current progression could work and make more sense with just more back story to go on.

It's still my opinion and I have seen this thread more time then I can count. Still does not leave way for an excuse to call me a child.

Then it is a hot topic with lots of discussion. So what, you see a bunch of threads on it. Ignore them if you disagree with the subject matter, or better yet, actually state that you disagree and give us some reasons why. See where I'm going here?

Because it's a video game, penguins have space ships, apex devolved to become smarter, florans butt rub, you can breath in space, ftl is not real. The game is sci fi.

And most video games revolve around a story or plot, including this one. Expanding on it in the right direction doesn't hurt. Also, this isn't just a video game, it's a video game still being developed. Discussion, suggestions, bug reporting, all these things are important to the development of the game. I still don't follow why you simply posted "great this again".

Yup because I did and that's what I meant not to mention all the lore is not implemented yet so people are jumping to conclusions. I insulted the topic no one in general. I guess you just want to be combative. I will agree to disagree with all those with your view point including the paragon of the forum that insulted me because I did not like the topic.

I would rather there be upgrades to the matter manipulator than new pickaxes and drills. It's kind of ridiculous having this awesome device that promptly sucks and ends up getting replaced quickly by something less impressive.

Also, the drill is a Terraria idea (or maybe Minecraft, I didn't play it that long)... it would be better if the drills were instead something like laser cutters... or maybe not better, just different... which would kind of be better.

OP I couldnt have put it better myself. No actually, I couldnt, I tried in my recent post :) Seriously though this all makes total sense. I would love to see a gentler curve in the acquisition of technology, and am all for the idea of crash landings to the point where Ill be hugely disappointed if in the final version, that ISNT how you start the game.

It was not my intention to be combative, I simply wanted to dig out why you responded the way you did. Congratulations you finally posted something constructive to the discussion and clarified as to why you disagree. People aren't jumping to conclusions, these threads are simply suggestions, I doubt anyone who has posted here thinks that the current progression and lore is set in stone. Opinions are one thing, vagueness is another.

You want my input? Make the Matter Manipulator more powerful, diamond pick speed... Now make it use up energy to mine at such a rate that if you drain all your energy it's less efficient to wait for it to recharge than it is to just use a normal ole' tool.

Why? Cause you've got the most advanced piece of tech on this mud ball in your hands... That thing can't be cheap on energy. Sadly, you don't have a massive end game energy supply. Oh well, least cutting down the first tree and getting the first 10 stone is easier, now.

I think this is a great idea, it explains why your picking up rocks when you have a spaceship, cause its broken.
    the only downside is... ya
it probably wont be implemented soon, but it really should be in at release

From the looks of it, the player will always play as a refugee/exile (You're an Apex rebel against MiniKnog, You're a "glitched" Glitch, You're a fleeing Hylotl.)

I like the idea that you crashlanded on a planet and have to fixup the ship, not just chop down some trees and stuff them into the engine.
ALso the mater manipulator is for manipulating matter, not digging holes (okay so it but it's no designed for that).
It would make sense you could upgrade it with plugin modifiers such as:
-mining laser - shorter range, but digs 3x3 area
-tractor beam - can pick up enemies and throw them
-energy launcher - can launch small energy spheres as an impro-weapon
-gravity well - attracts all dropped items when equiped, but drains energy (slower than it recharges)
-solar aray - lights up the area you click on for a short time
-sonnar - you can send out a ping that resonates on ores, but uses up all your energ and alerts enemies
-liquid vacuum - can absorb any liquid and shoot it back out, but has a very smal capacity (if you suck up lava you get burnt)

that is exactly what i got from it. it is meant to be used to basically extend your reach while building, and to let you lift things you wouldn't normally be able to. but as for digging, it CAN do it. just not well, because that isn't what it was meant for. that being said, i would like to eventually have an option on the MM to, instead of destroying things, picking them up, then replacing them where i want, i would like the MM to have an option to actually just lift the object and move it. would give me a reason to occasionally put it in my inventory, because right now it just sits in a chest. you do not need it in your inv to place torches, blocks etc. the only thing you need it in your inv for is if you intend to switch to it and use that item specifically.
