Should there be a hardcore mode? If so, what would the rules/content be?

1 life only - make sense
Hunger, temperature, and energy... - not necessary; depleting at a logical rate is only logical. Don't defy the law of biology.
Starting threat level planet 2-3 - sure
Perhaps include a unique quest line... - no, that's just limiting content for casual players.

Maybe have a scoreboard/ladder to keep hardcore competitive! The farther you progress the higher your score.
    Achievements!
Optional: Coal to fuel ratio decrease to 1:1 ratio. Since wood can be smelt to coal this still will not be too bad.
Other than that I do not see the need to really change anything else. I can not say Starbound is easy as it already is.

My apologies, Jun. I read your reply, and you do make some good points. No offense intended.

I just don't see it the same way. For me, a content is a quest line, or an extra boss fight, or even items that help you progress in the game. But special vanity items? No, that's not content, that's the equivalent of getting an achievement. If you want to distiguish yourself by completing this very hard task - you have to be able to do it. I don't even know why we're arguing, that's pretty standart game design.

Yeah, vanity items can be a 'badge of honor' type of thing. So I don't think it would be unfair to limit it to hardcore players at all if they bust their nut for it.

Haha, bless you. That gave me a good laugh.

It's fine. I'm afraid my blood pressure may have risen a little in frustration with the sequence of misunderstandings. Apologies if you detected hostilities in my post because of that.

I suppose this is something we'll have to agree to disagree on, then. I see vanity items as content just as much a quest line or boss fight.

Why? If I suggest to cut content from the hardcore mode I'm pretty sure you'll consider this a silly idea (I know I would). Why doing the same to softcore should be a good one?
Why would you need unique armours? Playing one way or another is a matter of choices, not rewards.

Plus there are only two possibilites:
    1. Hardcore and softcore characters can play together (it's unlikely to happen) and then share stuff. Most people wearing those shiny unique armours will start their journey with a full impervium gear with meach that those items would have no real value and the purpose of hardcore would be spoiled.
    2. Hardcore and softcore characters can't play together: Hardcore characters can't show their shining armours.

Another note that makes including a hardcore mode worth it as well is the extra coverage by media sources (E.g Youtube, Twitch). This wouldn't hurt the game at all because it'll make the game more well known to a greater audience. Who could argue with free marketing?

I would personally prefer to remove perma-death from the list, everything else seems fine for me.

Achievements are content too, but some of them you just can't get through repetition, you have to do something difficult with skill and effort, getting to tier10 in hardcore mode is probably worth an achievement, so why should there be another way to get it?

I'm not into this game for the difficulty like some people are, but quite honestly, I like that idea for the regular game as well.

I personally believe that achievements are silly and don't so much measure skill as much as they measure how willing you are to tediously go after something (meaning with enough repetition you can get it). I also don't see them fully as content, because they neither add, detract... or do much of anything for a game, and are usually tacked on afterwards. I see them sort of like goal lists you keep with friends, seeing who can get what under increasingly silly/irritating/frustrating/etc. circumstances. That said, it's personal opinion and another agree-to-disagree thing.

You should post this as a suggestion for a quest line (beginning or otherwise), it's a great idea on its own.

That's ok to have that kind of view on this, but saying "I don't want that option in the game just because it's not for me" is the different thing entirely. Speaking of limiting content for other players, huh? :)

But I... never... said that? I said I found them tedious and that they don't too much for the game, I never said to eliminate them outright. I wouldn't mind if they did, but I know there are people who enjoy achievements and yeah, they should be able to get them if they want.

If it happens that my response came off as that, then I apologize because I never meant it that way. I don't really have a stance on alternate ways to get achievements because I don't personally care.

I just based it on our overall conversation. Being able to beat a game in Hardcore mode DEFINITELY requires skills, extremely good preparation and focus.
That's why I think some rewards are necessary. Be that achievements or special vanity items (which are in the same category, as I see it, but maybe that's because I don't value vanity items too much).
