Should the percentage bars on the roadmap be considered indicative of the actual progress?

I am just wondering how well actual time/money and workload translate to graphics. It seems like realistic numbers, but how much faith do you put into them?

 

The percentages listed on the roadmap are rough estimates of course, given the current project timeline for each of the concepts listed. That said, I think they're reasonably accurate at this point since the roadmap is relatively new. The real question is how often it will be updated, and by what means are we to know "at a glance" that an update has been made in a particular area.

As to that last point, Tiy recently stated in his Reddit AMA that they plan to put something in place to make that easier. Also bear in mind that not everything in the roadmap has to be at 100% before beta is launched, nor is everything in game actually shown in the roadmap.

 

I think of them as Guidelines. Consiering that questing and NPC interactions need a lot of work and they still need to get their network infrastructure going with the anti cheat and anti griefing mechanics... I'd say those things will take a lot of time. If Multiplayer wasn't so important to this game, I think we would be seeing a beta very soon. But since it is... the Development and Q&A of such features take a lot of time.

 

Well one important thing to remember is it might take a week to get 50% on one thing and only a day to get 50% on another. Keeping that in mind there is no real way to know how much time it will take to complete any of those things. Something could be at 20% right now and only take a day to get to 100%.

I think the question in your title can be answered with a confident yes. Yes, they should be considered as an 'indication' of the progress (what purpose could they serve otherwise?). I would however not call it much more than that, one cannot make a perfectly accurate estimate of progress, but an estimate can always be made nonetheless. For us outsiders it is hard to draw conclusions out of these graphics, for we don't know when work on every subject has started and exactly what progression is made over the last months/years. Should the numbers be very well monitored, we might be able to say a little more about progress and we might be able to make some carefull predictions, though we should never underestimate the tenaciousness of the final stages of development.

Based on what exactly? I don't think you can simply add all the percentages and average them out. Not all elements of the game have the same "weight". Working on 20% of A may take longer than working on 80% of B, etc. And as Bacon said, some elements of the game are not on the roadmap at all yet, are those factored into that 70%? Do we know what their "weight" is? 70% sounds dangerously optimistic and woefully inaccurate to me...

This dude is right, you can just spend two hours adding them all up and dividing them by the number of percentages. I am curious to see what the exact percentage is, though. By the looks of things, I would put my money around 62-68 percent, maybe more. I would not say 70% is out of the question or "dangerously optimistic". Give these chucklefish credit, I mean they are not amateurs, and they have been at this for a long dang time.
