I searched high and low of this topic but I didn't seem to find any. So how about it guys? Terraria made a lot of memories for me and since Starbound is the Spiritual successor to Terraria, would it be nice to have some references from Terraria? Maybe the biggest issue is copyright, but other than that, maybe things like armor skins or jukeboxes that played Terraria music would be cool? I don't know! Discuss!

It'd be cool seeing some things. They shouldn't be in your face obvious though. Maybe the Eye of Cthulhu dead in the background of some planet or one of the NPC's dead in a jail cell.

What if Starbound had a tutorial level? And a future version of the guide in Terraria was the Starbound guide? GENIUS!

I think that adding a sand worm boss monster on a sand planet and naming it the eater of worlds would do well enough.

Yeah, a discrete yet amusing reference or two wouldn't go unmissed. Provided it's not too over-the-top.

No idea where you got that from. An update doesn't make it Terraria 2.. :p

No this is separate from the update. He confirmed a sequel.

Or at least TheMurumasa said so. Idk where he got the info. Probably TerrariaOnline, but I don't know;I don't go on there.

I do. There's no publicly confirmed sequel, and if it was "secretly confirmed" and someone was confirming that it was confirmed, it wouldn't be a secret and thus the internet would have more info on it.

Someone probably read this interview and someone severely jumped the gun somewhere down the line.

BUT getting back on topic, since I just wanted to clear rumors up, I wouldn't mind references, but a lot of people seem to have a hard time realizing they're two separate games as it is, so I'm honestly not sure it's the best idea, for...reasons.

The most I would like to see, is maybe a book you pick up that has a small story about 'The Guide" or something small like that. I do NOT want to see blatant in your face references. So far the pop-culture references we have seen are rather subtle, I'm betting a good portion of them would go right over your head unless you recognized the reference.

As people have said before, Starbound is already having issues with people thinking it's Terraria 2 when it's not. So small things that you wouldn't really notice, and if you did find the book or click on the right thing, you'd be like. "Oh, that's a cool little throw-back to Terraria."

But it IS... Or well, it's "Terraria in Space" or "Future Terraria on Steroids" as I tend to call it when I'm trying to give it a quick tagline to make people understand what it is. For people who don't know Terraria I usually go with "2D minecraft in space." It has to be compared to SOMETHING, and quite frankly the subgenre these games are in is so small that there's only a handful of things to pick from. Especially Starbound and Terraria, because how many 2D sandbox games where you can build and mine can you think of? There's really nothing else TO compare it to.

Don't be hating, the idea of it being a bigger and better Terraria has already allowed me to sell this to one person (and possibly their friend who plays with him) and get a couple others considering it. ...Now if I can only get them pre-ordering.

A funny way to have a terraria reference, would be to make the guide the first "boss" you encounter in the game. You start on a planet, trying to make yourself a space ship so that you can leave it, to complete it you will need a certain piece of equipment that can not be found or made on the planet. That's when you stumble upon the guide from terraria who just happened to be on the same planet, you have a fiery duel with him, get the piece and leave the tutorial planet.

the guide seems to be a popular idea here, i move that it should be another npc, personally i think Skeletron is just as iconic, perhaps a robotic skull you can find, that is just some decoration would be good, then only people who have really played deep into terraria would get it. i would also argue that after the update where the guide became actually moderately useful for crafting that he lost a bit of his memorableness because up till then he was quite possibly the most useless thing ever, in any game. period.

  17. I for one disagree with Terraria references, simple because I don't prefer it.

How about adding the robo helmet. It fits in both Terraria and Starbound.

It actually fits better when you consider that it's based off Quote, who was a robot.

I actually would very much like to see that as an item, even though it's less a Terraria reference and more a Cave Story reference.
