Hello everyone! If any of you play Minecraft you might recognize my screen name as the maker of the HarvestCraft mod, which adds over 50 new crops, dozens of new trees and bushes, etc to the game. I am wondering if there is any interest in me working on a similar mod for Starbound called StarHarvest. I've been working on porting over some of my Minecraft sprites over to a more Starbound feel. I've already successfully added cucumbers and apple trees as a test for my own personal worlds, so I am getting to know Starbound modding. Outside of adding crops and possibly food recipes, I would want to add in a shipping bin item that is similar to the Refinery. You'd be 'shipping' crops across the galaxy for pixels. I would have to price crops as 4 pixels each, as you can buy them from Cook merchants for 5 pixels each. Keeping them the same price would allow you to have a no-tax pixel saving/converting technique. Another thing I could add is some sort of biofuel for spaceships. =) So is a mod like this something folks would be interested in? I know there are already lots of farming going on in Starbound already, but I really feel that there are at least some crops that are missing (lettuce, berries, etc) and some foods have no way of growing them in game (red/green apples, oranges). Let me know!
You never know 'til you make it. Right now mods aren't the most "popular" thing since it's still in beta, if it's something you want, mod it in and release it - simple as that.
3 Questions 1.Would you make Fruit trees which you press e to harvest some fruit and the tree itself stays and new fruit grow on the tree eventually? 2. Would there be realistically growing bamboo (bamboo spreads through rhizomes which are able to be dug up from the dirt and eventually a new shoot sprouts up from the rhizome we eat the shoots at this stage by cooking it)? 3.Would Berry Bushes function like the previously mentioned fruit trees? Also potatoes dont grow from seeds you quite litterally plant the potato and more potatoes grow around it.
I'm glad folks are showing interest! Makes me happy. Starbound is a hundred times easier to mod than Minecraft. =) Does anyone know if there is anything in game like what Silverduke1 suggested, with the pressing 'e' to harvest something but not taking the entire item?
It doesn't seem too hard to do. You already press 'e' on crops to get them, just stop it from destroying the instance of the plant. May be easier said than done...I'd love to use this mod!
yeah.......yeah we need this also nice to see ya getting into starbound modding, I hope ya do make this stuff happen.
This is a great idea! Could you make it so the shipping bin automatically ships at a fixed point in the day (like harvest moon)? I wouldn't expect to have intergalactic agriculture delivery ships waiting on my homely little garden haha.
Actually - there IS an item similar to what silverduke1 suggested! It is the unique item in dungeons that spews matter blocks. When you use it, it spits out the matter blocks all over the place, yet the item itself remains (the only thing is if you try to dig it up, it disappears). However, this may be the function you're looking for, you would just have to look into making it reset after a certain duration and make it reusable again. Edit: And naturally you'd want to make it look like a tree and spawn apples fruit rather than matter blocks..
I think there is a part of code where you tell the plant to die, so I think if you skip that line, it should not die after you harvest it, but I got no clue if it go back to the previous stage. something around "command" : "die"
Woohoo, more Minecraft people! Anyways, farming mods are great *especially* if they add more content than just raw foods. Vanity armor, buffs, crafts--all great bonuses (especially for Florans like myself who stick to meat for the most part).
