Maybe I like shooting at the floor non-stop? Especially in this game, where I like hanging around with my friends and shooting my gun because I can.

No that was something that annoyed me greatly in Terraria.

I think the energy idea is great. If not and they decide to add bullets, I hope certain weapons, like energy based lasers or whatever, would still just be energy.

Just a guess, but a good one: They won't use both bullets and energy. There might be something in between, but not so black and white as that.

the whole argument about needlessly adds steps is a completely biased one.
What about smelting? Isn't that a needless step.
Or even making more then one anything.

A major concept of any game is the feeling of being constrained for a particular resource.
Which is why you constantly mine for more minerals. How fun would the game be if you mined coal once and all of a sudden you had unlimited coal? Or if you fueled the ship once, and you had unlimited fuel? the game would get pretty dull pretty fast. Right now thats how the energy system currently is.

In the case of meele weapons you suffer a pretty big penalty limited range of attack
Spear - only immediately infront of you
    Short sword - same
Broad sword - 110 degree arc.

If guns get buffed - meele weapons essentially become useless.
Which would require guns to have a much better limiter to balance the situation out.

Mmm.. I like the concept, but my preferred method would be keep unlimited ammo how it is, but have extra shot types that DO have a finite amount. With status effects or extra damage or whatever. So that way you can still pewpewpew with the default, and have a bigger punch only if you want to craft the ammo for it.

If bullets were added, I would prefer there be lots of different kinds of ammo because if it's all 'universal' ammo, then you will eventually get to the point where you just fill your ammo up occasionally. Different bullet types would fill up your inventory pretty quickly though, unless you could have an extra ammo tab.

Personally, Guns have a lot of issues I dislike at this time.
1st there literally are no guns in the beginning of the game unless you check a cords page for a vendor, or stumble upon it randomly .
2nd After finding the gun vendor, the few choices there are, not all guns even function at "full auto" for example using an assault rifle or shotgun you will run out of energy without reaching the guns actual dps because of the energy mechanic.
3rd the guns overall damage feel pretty lackluster and have more penalties tied with them where melee weapons can have crazy dmg and dps with no drawbacks.
4th I absolutely LOATHE that any techs use energy as a resource and guns use that same resource. I have no idea what balancing needs to be done where techs need "costs" to use .

I don't care if it's bullets, or energy, i just want to uze guns as primary weapon, which is currently impossible as they run out of energy too fast.
With offended coala rebalance most, if not all, guns run out of energy after you kill two regular critters, then i have to either switch to melee or retreat to recharge.

Yes, what I'm saying is biased, because we are talking about opinions. We are discussing whether the constraint they put on guns currently is a good one, or whether it needs to be replaced with an ammo system. But a regenerative energy system is still a constraint, and whether I like that constraint or this constraint is entirely preference.

Smelting ore might seem, from an entirely utilitarian perspective, useless, sure. But it is not tedious to me in the same way as crafting ammo, parsing out a particular resource, sifting through inventory to find it etc. so I say keep it in. I do not like the feeling of juggling ammo as a resource. Also, I see the universal pool from which all weapons draw as an excellent streamlining. Again, this is preference.

I wasn't talking about guns getting buffed, either. You and I are talking about leaving 'em how they are or adding the ammo constraint.

Additionally, you stated a compromise that I would be happy with in a comment I already replied to, and I maintain that if enough people object to infinite ammo, yours is a suggestion they should seriously take a look at-- with certain tweaks to energy levels, it seems a good system.

Finally, and I really don't mean to be unnecessarily confrontational here, but when we are quite obviously talking about opinion, please don't try to deconstruct my opinion by parsing through it for semantic mistakes or putative inconsistencies. It's frustrating, and really makes responding tiresome, which does not further the dialogue. Admittedly, I could just be tired and pissy. If that's the case, sincere (and I do mean sincere) apologies.

Amunition would only add to the clutter of an already overloaded inventory

The main issue I'm seeing with ammunition is that it adds a useless mechanic. Assuming that you NEED ammunition to use guns, all it does is encourage hoarding, which we're trying to discourage by giving players more things to craft so they'll get rid of their excess inventory.

All adding bullets as ammunition does is trade one excess inventory for another - you're trading excess ores/bars for excess stacks of ammunition.

Now, I can get on-board with a switch to ammo IF the ammo had variations which made it worth dumping ores/bars into (i.e. combine uranium rods + bars to get depleted uranium rounds, combine poisonous plants and ores to get poison rounds, etc). But if ammo is just going to be there to enhance "realism" or make the game more tedious, I can't say I'm for it. I mean, we have acceptable breaks from reality in gaming to ensure that the game is FUN, because that's the point of the game - FUN.

That's the thing. Terraria had 3...classes, sorta speak. Melee users (warriors,) ranged users (rogues) and magic users (mages). These are your classic staple RPG classes. Each class offered a different way of attacking enemies and they all had their own source to take from. Melee had an infinite number of uses (no source) being them weapons but limited to close range only, guns had long distance range but had ammo, and magic could only be used so much until a recharge or mana refill is necessary. The problem is Starbound does not have this third class, (mage) instead combining the source of a mage (energy) for guns instead. Now I'm not asking Starbound to start implementing staves, wands and magical phenomena etc, but until they have a "third" class of some sort, (and this far in development I honestly don't think it will) whatever it may be called, to put ammo into the game might make melee weapons worthless. If it did, I could see most people using the same strategy, using guns until the enemy gets to close range....over and over again.

However I would not mind some kind of third class.

Actually even then you wouldn't need meele.
You would just switch between a sniper rifle and a shotgun.
Meele has limited attack potential because of the arc of attack. While guns offer 360 degree range.

Hence essentially creating only 1 class in starbound.

They have energy. We do not need another stat, item, ui element ect to track and manage and clutter everything else onscreen

Yeah, its kinda lame to have infinite ammo. Having bullets ads the element of: "Should I use my gun? I don't have many bullets, might want to safe it for later."

I have a feeling TiY is going to succumb to the pressure and beef gun damage.
Another words destroying any point of meele.

No to bullets as consumable ammunition. Micromanagement loathing and base greed are against this.

But clips or whatever, usable as switchable weapon mods - such as "bucketshot clip" or "armor piercing" or "igniting" seems great to me.

    Want three classes?
Guns, right now, suffer from serious energy starvation, even without using tech at the same time. Make two sets of gear: energy boosting and armor boosting.
Energy classes will have enough to dodge around with tech to keep distance and shower enemies with projectiles.
2H and dual wield melee do what they doing right now: dodging-knockbacking or just rushing to kill.
Tanks with sword and board do their block-parry routine.

And, btw, shotguns and sniper rifles are the same thing at close range: same damage, same firing rates, same knockback, and really small contact area. So there is no difference if you switch.

Absolutely not. Energy consumption works fine for serving as a gun's ammunition as is (though numbers might need tweaking). It's one of the many things that annoyed me about Terraria.

If I want to worry about ammo, well, I have Battlefield for that.
