Ship upgrades?

Hey guys, a few hours ago a new post came up about ship upgrades. I don't mean to be negative, but does anyone else think that a 50-billion story ship is a bit too much room?

Nope. I want to fully decorate my ship like a true flaship. Then put NPC's in each room especially the various merchants

I don't mind the size by itself. There are two other things that bother me about it though.
    1. Very thin underbelly. Looking at the most upgraded version of the avian ship- there is a very thin layer separating your feet from vacuum, whereas you have many floors between your main floor and the top of the ship.
I would expect the main floor to be situated in a less exposed area.
    2. Very small thrusters at the bottom. The ship gains gradually more mass, but the number of thrusters doesn't grow proportionally. Right now the ship looks like a huge, fat dragon with silly little wings. Maybe make the thrusters bigger? (Not that the ship would need those at all to stay in orbit- the older designs didn't have those, but I guess we're throwing physics out in exchange for the rule of cool).

Also, is anyone else not crazy for starting off in a ship that looks as if it had exploded?

It makes sense though. Look at all the starter lore in the codex. For example the Apex had to steal their ship and fight past the miniknog blocade to escape. Makese sense the ship is shot up to thell

Technically your ship DID almost explode, so it makes sense for it to start out looking damaged.
As for the upgrades, well... if they are optional you could choose to not upgrade all the way to full size if you don't want to.

Personally I'll probably start a new game and build my ship full of storage rooms, gardens and what not. :)

Yes, It would make sense but I hope ship upgrades are fairly cheap

Floran starting ship also would have holes in it and lots of problematic areas, but that's probably because the Floran had a spear, not from any blockade.

    I stay with:
Let the people build ther ship complete like they want.
Restrict it to tech levels, make them need to build special expensive materials.
Like MAdTulips blag by blog Shipmod.
If you use not the Creative Cheat Mode.
It is not a simple task to get a cool ship, but soable. So it is not overpowered.

And we do not again end up with "Everyone has the same ship"

And please come now not with balance.... I doub there will ever come PVP Spacebattle.
The now Gamemechanic allows this not.

Guys, will there be a ship wipe to do all of this?

Racial identity. Besides a mod can stay a mod

I believe that there will be, but it could be two options:

    1) Current characters retain "Old ship" with no upgrade capability, but they are not forced to wipe. You should wipe, for sanitary reasons, though.
They would need to manually delete their existing ship, to get a "New ship".

    2) All character ships are wiped, and all characters have new ships that start out empty and busted up.

And will this affect our characters?

I think they said it would not negatively impact your character, but it likely WILL delete anything you stored in your shiplocker, plus anything you put in your ship (storage containers, beds, crafting stations, NPCs, dogs, doges, etc).

If you don't feel like re-crafting those things, you may want to consider moving them to your home planet for the time being. I think it is NOT expected that there will be a universe wipe soon (not until Outposts and a Single-Sector-Universe come out).

If you look closely at the new ships vs old ships, you'll notice the new ships interior space actually overlays the old ships - each upgrade adds new rooms to the same fundamental ship plan. I'd wager this is so that your old ship interior is retained with each upgrade.

Therefore you are only going to lose the contents of your ship, if you are using a non-standard ship plan (ie. mad tulips, xan frigate or corvette, peglaci ship), standard ships, and properly formatted mod ships (ie. ponybound, avali), should, in principle be upgrade compatible.
