I know this has been brought up before but I believe that the way I view it should be done is unique. I believe that instead of just having bigger ships it should be expansion to the one you already have. For example when you upgrade your star map it should also add onto your ship in a way that it doesn't remove what you already have or at least give you a warning as to what area items will be removed so you can remove your items in that area and let it expand. Also as an idea maybe you have to pay a price on top off the star map upgrade separatly so it takes longer to get hulking death stars. Even though this part should go in npc (at least I think) when you upgrade the size of your ship you can receive a special spot for merchants that you can invite from villages you find to placing your own spawner you find to fill that slot. What you said. As you progress, your ship will be enlarged as you go. Eventually your ship will be massive. But its still early beta. So these features arent implemented yet and you probably wont see them until much later.
if something like ship expansion doesn't get added into the game, i guess that's how starbound is going to get people start to build stuff on planets?
