Not like the metal blocking shields that are already ingame, but the kind of shields that are used in a lot of future games, block damage, drains energy, recharges, etc. It just occured to me that there should totally be a tech for it, it could either be passive or active and the damage would drain your energy pool instead of your health, it could have a pause each time you take damage to recharge energy so you can't 100% rely on it to save you from damage. Hmmm? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm?
Anything to make shields more interesting. A passive defense boost, special abilities, shield bashing, anything really. Shields are so boring.
Yeah but what I mean is energy shields, you know the things you see in games like Halo or Mass Effect (at least I think there were energy shields in that game). Of course I think there should also be more stats to actual shields and stuff, like some blocking better than others, bashing, charging, etc.
Full-body energy shields, huh? Not sure if I like the idea of a secondary health bar, but it certainly would make an interesting mechanic to use such a shield to keep radiation off of you. It'd add an extra incentive to keep your health at max, and avoid enemies. It might also be a means of adding fields for creating other space-suit alternatives, like a bubble-helmet. I could get behind this, but it's gotta be balanced.
I don't think OP meant a secondary health bar but an energy bar for your shield. Example you have 25 energy and 100 health, you get hit for 30 damage which wipes your shield out and hits you for 5 damage. Any successive hits before your energy starts to regen would be dealt directly to your health. Also I would love to see this added to the game
More like a Power Bar, (energy is for Tech and guns) Had the same Idea in the Thread above yours , a new gear spot for Shields would be cool, I'm thinking about shields ala Borderlands (spike, different element, exploding, buff, etc) with the random generating everything system already in place, why not random generated shields, but it would nedd a loooooooooot of balancing (like the whole game - beta etc)
Yeah I think it would be balanced if it used the energy bar that other techs used but would be passive unlike having to select the others, something you can simply turn on and off?
A tech that uses your current energy pool or as a back item with its own energy pool. If it were a tech then you already have the fact that your guns also use that energy and if/once we're able to use multiple tech at once you'll have to make choices between what you want to spend that energy on. As a back item it could have a slow in-combat recharge rate and a quicker one out of combat (dictated by that battle music that comes on).
To tell the truth, I don't think passive defense buffs are a good idea with shields. Its just kind of lame. I like the system they have now, where successfully blocking either completely cuts off damage, or cuts it. Although I do like the idea of perhaps having more advanced shield crafting capabilities (basic shields ARE kind of dull, especially in later levels.) such as shields that auto block at increased energy consumption (like energy shields) and shields that inflict damage on successful melee blocks, or reflect projectiles. That said, I don't think it should be a tech, I think it should either be an offhand item, or for automatic personal shields, back armor.
How it looks now, back armor is more for utility (light, inventory, style, breathing underwater) then combat help, so in my opinion if there an energy shield, it should have an own slot. (or buff the normal shield and make them different (I think they are all the same right now or? not sure...)
Not exactly related to OP, but it would be nice if the shields actually had, well you know, descriptions.
energy shield might become tech searching. they might need to add scientist to do tech research for all this.
