I did not know this, thank you for wonderful info :)

Are their sub tiers for quality? hmmmm, I've never seen better then a rare shield. Are there legendary shields?

They aren't 100%, Shields found on Level 10 planets do not block 100% damage vs all enemies on that planet. They reduce it via % and then minus the armor value possibly resulting in zero damage. I have Tier 10 armor and am immune to most damage on level 5 planets without a shield. You appear to be jumping to conclusions.

Do the testing without armor and you'll see the difference.

Shield % vs. Damage = New Damage Value - Armor Value = End Value

  4. I managed to snag a shield in x sector from a glitch king, it's called the 'kings Guard' and is quite possibly the best shield I've discovered yet. Too bad I have no idea what the block rating is :(.

Seeing as how most shields are randomly generated like weapons, I doubt they'll ever actually have a description set, but I can't wait until we see what they're actual block ratings are for the sake of bragging rights lol.

It would be wonderful to know the stats and values in detail. I keep hoping a dev might notice this thread and throw us a bone lol. Meantime we will gather what info we can as a community and try to figure this out.

I don't get shields all that much. They annoy me. 'Oh I'm on but not actually coz you switch to your torch' 'What?' 'Duh'

Right, but if it were percent, there were only 4 tiers, and I was wearing an alpha shield on a tier 10 planet, and impervium and blocked, I should still take 0-20 damage depending, or whatever. Or if I were wearing a planet tier six shield, or wherever the last tier goes of shield goes in a 4 tier system.

    That's not what happens.

Also, let's look at some screen shots.

Here I am on sector X, Tier 6 planet, with Ferozium on being hit. My shield is from a tier 5 planet.

Here I am being hit without it

    Ouch. That hurts.

So the armor reduces damage by over 66, because, well, you know. I actually take over 100 damage with armor off.

Now let's check blocking with and without armor:

There's with it! Four damage. Man, that's much better.

Without armor! Still only six damage.

Well that doesn't really make much sense if shields take off a percentage before armor value. . . I mean, the armor would only be taking off 2 damage period then.

Now if it just added a bunch of defense, and defense had diminishing returns. . .

But, let's go for the haymaker here:

Alpha planet, no armor, just shield.

    100% damage reduction.

If that shield does a percentage based damage reduction I should still be getting hit for SOMETHING there.

    SHIELDS ADD DEFENSE.

    THERE ARE TEN TIERS.

This isn't complicated, and anyone who uses shields often knows this.

Great post. This means the calculations for shields aren't as simple as just %, we might be dealing with a armor cap with diminished returns. Could it be % and base value? I'm not sure if there would even be a way to test that.

What quality shields did you use for reference purposes?

    Again great post.

First, don't assume i didn't read your enormous post because i only quoted part of it (because it's enormous).

Now, the facts: assuming that the block is indeed percentage based, if the damage you would have received without the shield is low enough ("low enough" depends on the percentage blocked, if the shield blocks 99% of damage, any value below 100 is low enough), that means you receive less than 1 damage while blocking.
Keep in mind i'm not stating that percentage based block is a fact, this is just an example of how percentage works.

The theory: "less than 1 damage" is disregarded and rounded down to zero.

And i think the rarest shield is rare, there are no legendary shields

Actually there are legendary shields of sorts... they don't have the purple border, but they have unique looks, like the eye shield, the purple/glass looking shield, the large red tower shield, a roman legionnaire shield. They have mostly the same-ish stats of the other blues, but their hit box is much bigger, thus reducing damage more often, or more reliably compared to T1 round shields, and T1 - 10 Glitch shields

There's also badass looking riot shields. USMC underground bases being the source.

Sure, but uh, here's the thing:

Okay, the shield reduced 34 damage to 4. As a percentile that's an 88.3% damage reduction, leaving 11.7% getting through.

That little purple dude from the alpha planet? He hits for 20 damage against a naked character. 11.7% of 20 is 2.34, meaning I should be taking 2 damage (if it rounds down, or rounds smartly) or 3 damage (if it always rounds up) not zero.

FURTHER, as it let through 11.7% of the damage while in armor, my naked blocking damage should have been eleven or greater, not six, as I was taking over 100 damage. Meaning it blocked a greater percentage of damage against the same enemy while naked than I was while armored.

Soooo, yeah no. Can't be a direct percentage.

That said, defense does seem to have diminishing returns. For instance, an alpha enemy that hits for 15 with one attack and 12 with another, has that reduced to 14 and 12 at 2 defense, 2 and 2 at 90 defense, and 1 and 1 at 134 defense.

Which means that you get roughly a 6% damage reduction against an alpha enemy with 2 defense, but at 131 you're still somewhere between 94 and 99% damage reduction as opposed to 393%.

I'm not really sure if it's percent based with diminishing returns or damage based with diminishing returns.

I'd do more testing on defense but given the fact that we have like. . . 10 sets of gear with each one only increasing the same stats and every stat being an upgrade every time, and no real options for accessories or anything, it's kind of. . . pointless.

There's no choices to be made in armor optimization so there's not a lot of point in knowing exactly how it works.

    Edit:

I lied and went and did a little more testing, grabbing iron and ferozium armor and heading to a beta planet where I found a friendly little guy to test defense on.

Left column is damage, right column is defense.

In the parenthesis are the damage per point of defense, first number is calculated from full damage, (so what each of those 180 defense are worth on average is .27 points of damage each) while the second number is calculated from the last testing number ( so the 49 defense from 131 to 180 is worth an average of 0.04 damage each).

    51 at 0
    41 at 8 (1.25 damage per)
    37 at 11 (1.27/1.33 damage per)
    31 at 15 (1.33/1.5 damage per)
    7 at 90 (0.48/0 damage per)
    7 at 93 (0.47/0 damage per)
    7 at 98 (0.44/0 damage per)
    4 at 131 (0.36/0.09 damage per)
    2 at 180 (0.27/0.04 damage per)

As we can see from this, defense seems to work on a kind of bell curve, where the first few points don't do that much, then it picks up, and then drops back off again as it goes higher and higher, until it does enough to reduce damage to zero.

Edit 2: I'd guess, but haven't tested, that the high point of the bell curve moves up the stronger the enemies you're up against are.

Still not sure if it's damage or percent based, though. I used damage there for simplicity, but it could just as easily be adjusting a percent subtraction on a bell curve.

I just made a test, and it seems armor doesn't effect the damage you receive while blocking.

I used the same Shield going from tier 1 to tier 10, only in tier 10 I started taking damage while blocking. Some Shields have blue rarity as well.

Only made the durasteel armor and then the impervium one.

I can confirm you can shield block meteors, with tier 10 armor and a rare glitch king shield they do 2 damage on a block. I have yet to encounter the huge meteors in a block situation but it's unlikely any amount of block/armor value could prevent that.

Sounds like you did a ton of mining and nearly no fighting if you were only taking damage on tier 10 when blocking.

all i know is that a rare shield from an alpha planet blocks about 30 damage.

Also in the above situation a smack to the face by a giant meteor does about 100 damage, and the after shock rocks do about half that.

It does way more then 100, you just don't see damage done past your max hp.
