    Yeah I was thinking that there could be another item that could be equipped which would activate a secondary function for the shield, but that could be confusing for some people, even though people could get used to it.

    Another thing that could be done though, is to have it functioning another way. If you are running with the character and bringing up the shield with left or right mouse button it could perform the shield bash, knockback effect. Like, because you are running instead of walking it would perform a shield bash animation and then return to normal shielding. If you are just walking then it would do normal shielding. But then we have another problem, because then you can't stand still while doing a shield bash knockback, which would be kinda annoying to think about.

    So the other possibility would be Shift + Right Click (shield equipped on right click). You could even bring in another functionality this way by binding the keys. Like Alt + Right Click. So Shift + Right Click could perform a shield bash knockback effect and then immediately after you could press Alt + Right Click to bring up the third functionality, which could be for example making the shield burn for a while by draining energy.

    Edit(2):

    If they are making this game available for a iPad/Android then there can not be any secondary functionalities because you won't be able to access that by using an iPad/Android. You can't Shift + Right Click with an iPad/Android. So I really hope they won't make it available for iPads/Androids, it would be silly to not include epic functionalities just because you want to play it on an iPad/Android instead of a Mac or PC. Like seriously guis. :rolleyes:

    Sure it looks cool but how practical is this really? I just hope that there is more focus on considering additional functionalities instead of "how practical would that functionality be for playing it on a Android?". Well that's my opinion on that matter anyways... :coffee:

    Can't be a Spartan without using a shield as a weapon...

    Either way, Shields having a bash seems like the best idea. I'm not just gonna hold my shield up at an attacking foe, going 'herp-derp' and standing there just to take a little less damage, I wanna bash my enemy away and create an opening for my own retaliation!

    And for the argument "You always have your mainhand weapon!", you would, theoretically, have to temporally lower your defense just to swing, pushing them away THEN swinging seems like a better option. (Although, one could say you could just reach around your shield and poke/shoot them, but let's not get too hasty.)

    What, like a shield bash?

    It'd be cool if you could shield bash and deal a tiny amount of damage while stunning the enemy. Maybe some shields could slightly increase the damage taken after shield bashing too.

    I do like the idea of weapons and shields have dual functions. But if shields could do damage, even small amounts, I think that might make them kind of over-powered. Perhaps a better choice would be a "knock-back" (stun seem too OP as well).

    Yeah I agree, knock-back seems like the best choice, I think that should be a default function for all the shields. They would be kinda plain without that functionality. But why stop at one additional functionality? There could be a third functionality for them (shields, melee, and shooting weapons). I think the more depth combat has the more awesome it will turn out to be, as long as it's not too exaggerated.

    I wouldn't mind a passive damaging effect when something hits your shields with melee. Perhaps even a shield that ricochets bullets could be nice.

    Now that you mention it, a Shield Bash would be pointless unless the enemy was already in melee range. Maybe the Shield Bash should just be a mod on certain shields that automatically inflicts knockback on foes who strike you with melee while your shield is up. It is more simple and elegant than having to do an input, shift+clicking, using an item in the other hand, etc...

    The only disadvantage is that you would only be able to counterattack with it.

    You could have another shield mod that makes it work like the Medusa Head shield in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. You hold it out, and anything that touches it takes damage. That could also work with knockback. You could equip different kinds of shields in each hand to get different shield mods.

    This is not a bad idea, except I don't like to think about experiencing random shield bashes happening. Sure it would be fine if it wasn't happening at random, but then that would not really be a shield bash, it would be more like a collision ricochet effect. But it's not a bad idea, shields with active effects would be cool. Like flaming effect shield, ricochet effect shield, ice effect shield, black hole effect shield, etc.

    Shields as they are are fine for me. It looked like it took alot of hard work to get them to where theyre at right now, and Im pretty content with what Ive seen of them. That said though, the energy stop while your using a shield is to keep people from turtling when under fire. Shields grant a pretty good armor bonus, and if you have it up nonstop, you can be considered OP anyways, especially when you add a knockback/melee damage/stun.

    Although, looking at this from a realistic point, it would make sense, and likely not all shields work the same way. The developers, from what Ive seen, may even implement types of shields that are wholly strange and differernt to handle than what were used to. Remember the Brain Reboot suit? Acts as an emergency death evader if your energy is full when you die. Such things could show up on shields even!

    That said though... I wonder if poor Bartwe-san is suffering under the effects of burn-out with the amount of hours hes logged lately on game development.... hes been going 12 hours straight days the poor thing..

    Really? Wow, I had no idea he was dedicating that kind of time. As much as I want the game to come out as quickly as possible, I don't want the devs to get burned out either. Everyone deserves a day off.

    But seriously, how the hell do they get so much done so fast?! I just started pixel art for my race suggestion and it takes FOREVER to make just one armor. I feel sick just thinking about trying to animate them. And yet they apparently have thousands of furniture items and blocks and weapons and monster parts and and and... Hell, I'd want to keep a second job because that job would be a break from this one!

    Well like you said, the energy bar is there to prevent you from using the shield constantly. However having a shield bash (knock-back) function would not be overpowered, it would fit in quite nicely in my opinion, would compliment the shield. I'm not fine with stun though, I don't like the idea of shields being able to apply stun to the target, would be too much of an advantage.

    I hope that the shields will have different abilities or effects, or at least have differences from each other more than the look and defense stat. Like some extra depth would be nice, that's what I'm hoping for. :coffee:

    Welp, my good friend your in luck. Shields are extremely likely to have the same diversity as the weapons and guns, seeing as how theyll be randomly generated too. Just as soon as the system for making them do that is made! Its just a matter of time. :)
