while I don't think you should be able to full on attack with a shield being able to shield bash a enemy away would be useful also with the case that you can duel wield shields you could be a 'shielder' for your teammates you with a shield in each hand move up ahead blocking on coming damage and pushing them back while your teammates are behind you dishing out damage

I voted no because I believe in general regular shields should be used for blocking and defending, not attacking.

That being said, I'm not opposed to specialized shields specifically designed to have a unique or special function, which of course could include unique shield attacks.

Like someone said, a shield that can knock opponents backwards would be useful. Or you find a shield that has spikes on the end of it and do a small amount of damage to foes that run into it. I could even see a specialized 'parry dagger' that could function as both a weak shield (by parrying) as well as a weak melee weapon (ie: parry dagger in one hand for shield/melee and a gun in the other hand to cover all your bases).

The possibilities could potentially be limitless, just like with everything else in the game. A shield that actually recovers energy on successful block/counter attack would be awesome. And, to be honest, I fully expect there to be unique and cool shields in the game, either by launch or added shortly after. However, for your standard, run of the mill shields? I think they should remain a basic defensive/blocking tool.

I voted yes to attack option, but by voting yes I am not voting for a shield to do massive damage like a sword would. A little damage would be enough, and I would expect the "attack animation" to be a shield bash kind of thing. But like you said there could be different types of shields that would do different things as a secondary option. Like a shield that absorbs bullets and then shoots them back by draining energy for example. I agree that there are a lot of possibilities to consider.

I really don't like the idea of a shield having an attack. Much of good gameplay is based on making interesting choices. Having a shield gives you AMAZING defensive prowess but you lose either the option of a melee attack or a ranged one. It effectively cuts your offensive options in half. Giving it an offensive ability changes this entirely, now you get some extra offensive utility on an already amazing piece of equipment. It becomes less of a choice to grab a shield.

Now, without playing the game I couldn't tell you if having a stun, a knockback, a shield rush, damage/projectile reflect, or a dozen other possible abilities would be a good addition to the shield system as it stands. I do like the idea of these and the variety they might bring to gameplay, but without actually getting my hands on it I don't know if it's balanced or a good addition to the gameplay yet. Of course, this would also likely require some abilities on ranged and melee weps as well to compensate for the shield abilities.

It might be nifty if the shield had a knockback or stun (really preferably the former than the latter) property that activates when it's raised. If they do have it, they should have an energy tax to go along with raising the shield to discourage spamming the ability.

This would give them a utility outside of just defending, alongside (probably) being relatively simple to implement without needing to make the combat controls anymore complex than they currently are. No need to add charging mechanisms (think MegaMan) or additional weapon mode buttons (think alt-fire in a *lot* of first-person shooters).

Yeah, the shield actually having a damage output does not have to be a big deal though, or actually having a damage output at all wouldn't be necessary for a shield bash knockback kind of thing. Since the purpose would be to knock enemies back, it wouldn't have to deal any damage.

I don't like the idea of a stun effect from a shield though, mostly because I have been playing Soul Calibur V lately and it becomes very cheap after a while with those stun combos. Like once you are stunned you can't move, then getting hit again and then stunned, over and over until you have no health left. The problem with that is that it comes down to whoever performs the stun first to deal the most amount of damage to the opponent and have the upper hand or end it that way. A secondary knockback function to a shield would be a lot more accepted.
Yeah I think that the secondary shield function should drain energy, otherwise it could be abused.

Anyways, you can imagine higher tier shields that could have a more advanced secondary function. Like absorbing projectiles and then being able to send them back once you let go of the secondary button (probably left mouse click). And another shield that would be able to create a protective bubble surrounding your character, very good if you are surrounded with multiple projectiles or multiple opponents. And stuff like that.

Just having a secondary function for the shields would add a lot of additional possibilities to be considered.

    Edit:

Hmm if you were holding a sword in one hand, and a shield in the other, I suppose it would be left mouse button and right mouse button, using the sword and using the shield. Having a secondary function for the shield would either require an additional button or (press and hold) functionality. I guess a press and hold functionality would not work since you would do that to bring the shield up normally. It would probably work for a sword, but a shield would require an additional button if that is how it works. Not a big deal one could say, but it does go outside the plans already made for using left and right mouse buttons for simplicity. Hmm...

I don't know what crappy RPG you got THAT definition from.
All shields are Bulwarks, Bulwark just means defensive fortification, or literally anything you're using to defend yourself.
Your clothes are a Bulwark to the weather.
(A Bulwark is also part of a ship, a Rampart or the breakwater on anything seaworthy)
Can't help but step in for Language, especially with things people drag from video games.
I'm guessing whatever game you got it from was simply calling it a Bulwark because it is serving as one.
(As an example, Runic Bulwark from Final Fantasy)
Not because a Bulwark is specifically a kind of shield.

After running it through the universal translator, it appears to read "Like this if you cry every time."

The universal translator is now babbling about, ah, 9000 mudkip cheeseburgers? What the hell did that message do to it?

This made me think of Rygar. Your only weapon was a spiked shield attached to a chain that you could swing around. Either that or how Goofy uses a shield in Kingdom Hearts. Or Captain America, even though he often uses a gun in his other hand.

Maybe instead of the shield-throw being a feature of the shield itself, there could be a special glove that magnetically returns the shield after you throw it. Using the click the shield is assigned to just uses the shield as normal, but using the click for the glove initiates a special attack with properties based on the shield.

I think that would be much better than a simple shield-bash.

A shield slam with a push back effect would be pretty neat I suppose.
