Shard Planets

This is my idea for a fictional kind of planet, a shard planet. He gains his name from is unusual appearance, consisting of a giant mass of floating fragments that assemble around a non-visual magnetic core that holds them all together. Just imagine something as the floating islands from Terraria, with the minor difference that the whole planet consists of such seperated platforms.

    ANIMALS
Many animals on shard planets are pretty good climbers. They have sharp claws, more than 4 limbs, long tails to grab on things or a gooey skin. Some of them move by travelling in the air. They exhibit large sacks of helium to float, wings or an extremely low bodyweight to rely on the wind direction on the planet.
Some lifeforms also never move from one special platform using it as their everlasting "home". They burrow into the ground and create large caves and tunnel systems which they protect with their lifes.

    PLANTS
You'll often find networked groups of vines, connecting two or more shards. Often they are the transmitters between the ecosystems of these platforms, sending nutrients back and forth. Since place is pretty rare on the shards, the plants tend to grow very close to each other, forming a chaotic bunch of vegetation. Only some shards have small lakes or puddles to provide life for them, so many plants are adapted to a life without much water.

    GRAVITY
Gravity would be relatively weak on a shard planet, since the platforms are barely held in position by the magnetic core.

    Got any more ideas?

Oh I love this. I think the wind speed should differ on these planets. It'd be tricky and kinda terrifying to be blown off a shard of the planet and hope to god you land on another shard.
Perhaps some could exhibit forms of civilization that connect these shards in a form of alliance. Another idea is to seperate the biomes of the planet and isolate them to a single shard of the planet.

Seperated biomes depending on the shard sounds pretty interesting too. Reminds me of this one mod for minecraft where the world generator creates a map with floating spheres which are all made out of different materials. =)

Reviving dead threads! Yay! This would be so great! By the way, what kind of scale would this be on?

I would make my base on the largest island, and there should be an item to maneuver around the planet,at first being something that leaves you at the mercy of the wind, upgrading to a jetpack that nullifies wind in a certain area around you, instantly restarting as you move away

You should be able to break the magnetic core and send all the shard planets crashing into each other and eventually flying off into space.

This is pretty epic. Reminds me of Xen from the Half Life universe... ;P

Magnetic boots might be wearable if they are ingame that would allow better gravity ( more stickiness) to the surface blocks
