It's been a common ailment for multiplayer servers, without help of heavy modding, to crash quite often. Some prioritize roleplay, and others prioritize exploration, but bar none, I have not seen a server that has not been rendered unusable by someone inadvertently exploring planets, or some poor interfacing. I am unsure what it is that causes this, but that is exactly why I have created this thread. I would like there to be some examination as to the server structure, and instead of putting it on the backlog, have it worked on /before/ "Starbound Pets!". If you have suffered similar problems, and would like to see a better collective community of Starbound players who are not dissuaded by not being able to play anyway but by themselves, please give attention to this thread. Post some testimony if you will, and if you have some advice, or evidence of unreasonable multiplayer server crashes, submit them.
I am part of a large community centered around starbound. The server stability is indeed a mess. Crashing is constant to the point of near unplayability (though it varies) when the amount of people in the server reaches something as simple as 10-15 players. I have heard a twitter reply relating to you guys fixing it, but nothing has been heard since. What ever happened to the stability fixes? Word on them would be lovely.
Yes, please, please please please fix the server problems, this is going to damage a lot of people's hopes for the game if you don't fix it soon.
Please fix this. Multiplayer is basically the main reason starbound is played, and I'm sick and tired of dealing with server crashes.
I vote for this as the top priority. I own a 2xQuad Core Xeon server with 32GB of mem. Pretty beefy server. However it seems the SB server is limited to using only two cores of the available eight. I experience the same as noted above. around 8-12 people cause extreme lag most of the time. I think we could have a pretty amazing community with return players and high populations if it were stable and utilized server resources better. It's pretty limited in it's current form.
While I see where the devs are coming from in leaving stability and performance unattended while fleshing out the game, I must admit that I'm not really sure it's wise. Neglecting stability and performance may make it easier to establish the main content of the game and allow for a large and concentrated effort to squash all the bugs at once, but it seems fairly detrimental to the community. Singleplayer is great and all, and many people will be completely satisfied with it alone, but those of us who are really into the game will most likely want to use multiplayer after a while as we want to be part of a community that's also into the game and keep playing. Without decently stable servers, we'll probably become relatively disinterested or just plain fed up with it all. Furthermore, this issue goes further than just servers. Our clients are remarkably laggy as well, I mean why on earth should a game like this run at 15FPS on a quad-core i7 and 670MX? And when 1.0 comes out and it's all stable? Well, some of us will come back. However, I'm a bit unsure if it will be a desirable amount. I guess I'm just worried that most of the community we're going to get is already here, and while some people will just return when the game is in a more playable state, many will not. There's actually some data to support this, too. Going by the Starbound reddit subscriber numbers, the community never fully recovered from the long span of no updates. About 4,000 users unsubscribed in the time between updates while only 3,000 subscribed once the winter update was rolled out. Plus, in the last few days, the subscriber count has begun to decline again. I fear that if the severe performance issues and stability issues keep deterring people, the community may deteriorate at an even quicker rate, and nobody wants that. Then again, I don't really know what I'm doing, or even talking about, when compared to the team. They have years of experience with this sort of thing while I do not... So, please take everything I say with a grain of salt.
Chucklefish, c'mon, please fix server stability. A large part of starbound comes from it's multiplayer. I've spent about 200 hours in single player, and close to a THOUSAND in multiplayer. There are tons of multiplayer communities out there suffering because of the lag and crash issues. And you guys never got back to us about the server stability tweet, simply posting it, possibly just to shut us up? And then kept silent about it. Please fix multiplayer. It's so filled with bugs I got malaria from it.
Getting sick of Chucklefag just making promises and weekly 'updates', making their faithful players actually hope that one day Starbound might actually get some server optimizations up and running, to the point where I believe Chucklefuck does not realize their responsibilities and priorities as devs. Why make a multiplayer-oriented game, or at least a game that's more fun to play in multiplayer, when they're just going to leave their game running on duct tape and honey? It makes no sense. Don't give me that "they have a lot in their plate" excuse, They manages to churn out a bunch of new items, a new race, tech upgrades, etc., all within a year since the last update, mind you, but don't bother to fix what's actually broken. It's dumbfounding.
Yes, please do this chucklefish. the majority of the player base is in it for the multiplayer, and without it, they leave. The fact that instead of fixing multiplayer, you churn out new content best for singleplayer is what is turning people away from starbound. as others have said before me, the priority of new content is NOT a good idea. Fixing multiplayer should be your best priority. Chucklefish, you have said in the past that you are "working on it", but without results, we cannot believe you. So please, fix multiplayer.
Source It looks like our prayers have been at least somewhat answered. We won't really know just how much server stability has improved until the patch hits, but it's something.
