What is the upper limit for how many people you could get on a server? Like, I know every server would be a bit different, but what are the variables and how high could a servers population get on Starbound if you're running a dedicated server machine?

The biggest problem at the moment is the server's CPU usage, I think. When a couple of people explores new planets the server has to generate the planets on the fly and that causes huge CPU spikes. What I've heard so far is that some servers with lot's of horsepower have managed to run with about 40 players, tops. The RAM usage is quite high too, expect to have to use 8GB to serve 40 players ~ish.

My server is a junk laptop from walmart I keep stuck over on a shelf. i3 1.9ghz, 6gigs ram
I had 12 people on at once on the first day and it seemed quite good.

My issue is CPU maximization. 12 GB ram is just fine for 40 players. I don't even use half of it.

Same here. I had to switch providers because the server crashes. Right now, I am having problems with the worlds corrupting during crashes, then causing more crashes, causing more corruption, until the server won't even come up for more than 5-10 minutes.

    Operating System: Debian 6
    RAM: 16GB

This is basic spec for the server i use to host. Please note that i am also running a minecraft FTB server as well.
I noticed that almost no ram was being used by starbound, maybe 1-2gb max but i would often find the CPU spiking upwards of 700%. Subtract 100% for minecraft and we are talking about 6 cores being dedicated to starbound. This was during peak hours when a collective 57 players were actively engaged within the server.

Hey Mikey, where are you hosting and what plan? How much does it cost? Thanks for the help.

    We use HFB servers.

It all depends on your hardware. We have about 25 free starbound servers on a single dedicated machine right now. It's hard to keep exact player counts for every server, but we've been watching one server that usually has anywhere from 10-40 players online. These servers don't seem to give up RAM, so just restart occasionally.

Where are you hosting clinton? How do you have 25 free servers on a single machine? I have a machine up and it chews up 8 cores with 20 people on.

I'm a server provider. The machine running them is running great and you're welcome to test one of the servers yourself if you want.

I have yet to see over 2 gb ram on 40 players

Sure, I'd be glad to test one. Can you provide some more info?

I posted this on another thread, but it seems applicable here as well. So,

I can only give you the specs of the server I run and the performance it gives.

    - AMD Phenom II X4 975 @ 4.0GHz

    - 8gb Memory

    - 64gb SSD in Raid 0

    - 100mb up/down bandwidth

With <25 users connected everybody pretty much reports zero lag or performance issues.

I don't know how much this information will help you. But hopefully it gives you a metric to go off of as far as server performance goes.

I thought you meant you were renting servers. I am pricing them out. I checked out https://www.hfbservers.com/billing/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=1 as suggested in this thread. Where do you rent? My current server provider is linode and the virtual CPUs definitely don't cut the mustard.
