Technically, the game's in the Alpha stage of development.
Traditionally, it's done like this :

- Early-Alpha : In thought stage. No coding done yet, We think what we want to have in our application / game.
- Alpha : Heavy development, features are being added. Bugs are expected and lightly being squished, but the focus is to implement the wanted features. Sometimes, tech-demos are given to the public to show how much the developing has progressed.
- Early-Beta : Pretty optional, some give closed-beta access to their application/game. It is expected to have MOST features done and mostly but not strictly bug-free. It's often simply called Beta, not wrongly so, though.
- Beta : The application or game is feature-complete (for what is wanted for the first release). We now go on a bug-hunting spree, and the application/game is feature-frozen until release.
- Release : Like the Beta, but with 99% bugs fixed -- All those which have been detected during Beta.

Also, i dislike Starbound's versioning. Cool yeah, but impractical.

 

Eh I like the way they are making fun of how they feel. Its interesting and makes it more of joke than anything else.

 

I think the alpha should have been a wallpaper sized picture of a koala, and each successive version up to release should slowly zoom in on his eyes.

 

So if I take some ground beef, make it into a patty and fry it, then place it between two pieces of bread with lettuce, onions and a some tomato and I call it a meat salad, it isn't a hamburger, but a salad?

 

It could be anything you want it to be because you made it. It could be a rocket. Each "company" names things differently based on how they feel the information is. Therefore this is a beta and not alpha.

Starbound is in alpha.

 

Based on what you want it to be. But based on the Devs, its not.

 

Starbound is in Faustian stage right now.

Soon we will enter the Pynchon stage, and there will be much defecation.

 

There isn't anything wrong with the devs calling it a beta by mistake. They make mistakes all the time, just like you with all your crappy grammar. Nothing wrong with that at all! Starbound is in alpha regardless of what they initially claimed.

 

You state they made a mistake of the naming convention between beta and alpha. Thing is, not every company follows the same guidelines of what the section is called. They could of just stated, "Phase 1", and nothing else about it. Your point?

This thread has devolved from a stupid question into an argument over semantics.

From a technical standpoint, this beta is borderline alpha regardless of whatever irrelevant nomenclature Joe Dumbass wants to use in describing it.

And by the way, we have an English language for a reason. If I were to call a cow a pig I'd receive odd looks, insults and be forever barred from becoming a cattle herder because of my blatant idiocy.

I doubt the people who developed the NASA Space Program called their rocket fuel 'lemonade.'

 

If it was quite that simple it really wouldn't be a constantly disputed thing now would it?

Also : It's sort of a dick move to bemoan that we have fallen to arguing (or in mine and bert's cases mocking) over semantics , and then launch into an absolutist argument based on prescriptive views towards linguistics.

From a technical standpoint that is kind of stupid.
