Serious Lag and Latency Problems via Steam Multiplayer

Hey, recently started playing starbound mulitplayer with a friend via inviting them through steam, and we are getting major lag, I test my ping and its pretty healthy, and I dont suffer lag in any other game (even more heavy duty games)

Any tips on how to prevent this?

 

Hey thank's for the reply, Im rather new to the whole multiplayer side of starbound, how can me and my friend (its only 2 of us playing) connect directly?

 

Okie sorted all that out and got me and my friend connect but still suffering lag.... what are we saying is a reasonable upload speed?

Upload speeds are typically very low because home connections are intended for "consumption" s you get higher download.
