Sentry Guns?

I think it would be a cool way to defend (both from creatures and players) yourself if you could use sentry guns! It could be cool in Capture The Flag matches or something. And you need to repair and refill their ammo (and maybe even upgrade them!). They can just shoot at enemies in front of them so like when you place a chair in Terarria you can choose which way its pointing.

That would be awesome to be able to defend yourself and you base with sentry turrets

 

I think it MIGHT be a good idea, but how will the spy sap it?

should have occasional glitches like shooting you instead of enemy's(they would only be short bursts before it corrected itself so it wouldent kill you) and some enemys might hack it

Well, maybe you can craft some sort of item like... A sapper!

 

I think it is a good idea, but i think the guns on the base should be tied into a power generator. Each shot fired would drain the battery till it was able to recharge. If a portable sentry was made i think it would be best to have it setup as a player reload item. Or maybe something like a portable battery pack to allow you to setup a foward base or camp. Could run lights, sentry guns, and repair/rearm equipment that way.

It could have various types, such as Standard (perfectly normal), Heavy (Set up very slow, but extremely tough), Light (Sets up quickly, though weak in damage), Camoflauged (Not very damaging, but can't be seen/targeted until close up), Portable (Can be moved, but is frail), etc.
Maybe even different types of ammo, such as bullets, lazers, rockets, etc.
And a generator would be nice to help limit their power so it's not all "sentry ahead!", though it should be proximity based rather than needing a wire to be built.
Each could have some sort of level system, with each type getting some kind of boost to help complement it's abilities.
As for moving them, perhaps like high above only Portable ones could be moved.
Also, the builder should be able to see it's range in a circle before setting it down, perhaps a large translucent circle that is in stark contrast to the background at all times?

 

While we're at it, have some item that lets you take manual control of it and makes a red laser pointer come out of the sentry.

 

Sounds like a reasonably good idea maybe you could have them yourself and made an awesome space fortress or station that you use as your base as you travel around the galaxy or maybe you can turn a planet in itself into your base /fortress.!

 

Maybe EMP grenades to balance or ammo type of one shot that is EMP.

Sounds like a neat idea, especially if there was some maintenance involved like you suggested.

 

why not just tie them to a pressure plate to trigger them?, that mixed with some landmines and a few other siege staples could hold off an army

 

Instead of some deployable sentry guns a'la Team Fortress I'd rather have it to be an automated construction/facility/building to defend one's base. Infinite ammunition I would actually prefer, micromanaging resupply for those things would probably become dull for many players soon otherwise. The damage, accuracy and rate of fire can be balanced because of it, additionally allowing different kinds of turrets (as in 'spray and pray' machineguns or accurate and strong but with horrible rate of fire railgun stations).

Also, I would like those things to be rather expensive and with some limits per planet so one won't just cover the whole surface of more difficult planets with them.

Other than that, I like the idea and wouldn't mind such thing being added to the game.

 

Definitely. I would love to see automatic (kill any creature on sight or kill any hostile creature on sight), activated (you pull a lever from your base, or a creature stands on a pressure pad and gets shot, etc), and mounted (duh).

 

I like the idea of sentry turrets, but perhaps they could take some time to spin up when an enemy is approaching and within the turret's sights?

 

Well, I think it would be cool if there was different types of sentry guns. Like one that shoots lasers and one that shoot bullets. And maybe one that shoot arrows! So you can have a sentry gun a bit more earlier in the game.

 

And then you can upgrade it. Arrows -> Bullets -> Railgun/Rockets
