I'm Not Sure Where To Put This, As It Fits In On Mechanics, And A Few Other Sections.
And I'm Sorry That I Capitalise Every Word. It's a Habit, And I'm Trying To Ditch it.

    The Suggestion:

    Sentient Races.
This Idea Would Work Like Spore, A Small Bit. Simply, The Game Is Giving Lots Of "Head" "Torso" And Legs" Parts, And Are Totally Randomised And Give Matching Colours To the Planet It Appears On. E.G A Ice Planet Might Have the Colours White To Grey, And Light Blue. Also, Each Race Would Be "Passive", "Friendly" Or "Aggressive"
So, If You Murder A Ton Of "Friendly" People, They'll Hate You And Try To Murder You On Sight. YAY!!!

But, Each Planet Would Have a Chance From 1% To 99% To Have a Sentient Race, And Depending On Gameplay Time, Each Planet's Race Would Be at a Different Stage, E.G. One Planet Could Have A Aggressive Tribe Race, And They War Over A Rare Resource, And You Could Make Peace Between Them By Giving Them A Ton Of Said Resource.

    The Stages Would Be:

    Tribal
    Civilised
    Space

Each Stage Would be Out Of Sub-stages, E.G The Tribal Would End When They Find Fire, And The Civilised Would Start At the End Of Tribal. So, You Could, As Such, Speed Up A Evolution By Giving Them The Item To Move Onto The Next Stage.

I Also Though, That If You Help a Race, There Is a Small Chance (Something Like 1.5%) They'd Have Captured a Person You Have To Save, And They'd Give them to you.

I Also Had The Idea That They'd Give you Quests To Find Things, (E.G. The Lost Cheiftan's Daughter - Sorry, HAD To Do that) Or, Kill Some NPCs.

    Just a Idea.

    Now Discuss!

    Tachikoma and Ageila like this.

Alllirrght. So I thought this was a cool idea. Though when I got to the part about randomizing creatures I was all
    [IMG]
    But thats just mostly because
1- I dont think that'd really work for a game with pixelated graphics... though with Spore, yes.
2- Id really like it if all the aliens were unique, seeing two aliens with the same torso would be depressing.
So yeah. Though I liked all your other ideas, especially the one with Tribal, Civilized, and space. I actually thought of something like that before :p But yeah. Cool idea.

the stages could be too much like spore, i mean like that they probably have copyright

  4. Gredd18

    Gredd18 Giant Laser Beams

Copyright. Fails. You Change ONE THING. E.G. Tribal To Tribe Stage, and You Get No Copyright. :p

  5. Im pretty sure they will have different levels of technology, but they don't need to be called something special. You could even just have "Technological level: 1/3" or something if there was a title needed.

Anyway, I much prefer altering existing characters than trying to copy-paste things like legs on new bodies, since you would have to make them sort of generic so all the possible parts can fit.
A turtle-shelled penguin and an armored lizard are much better than a penguin-headed lizard imo. :l

Lol, Penguin-Headed Lizard... Good Damn'd Idea

Would this- Lets call her a princess for now- 'reward' you for being handsome, and strong and manly and uber fit... Oh and for saving her of course? :3

honestly i feel just some species of monsters being sentient would work, but tech levels could not progress with the way Starbound saves worlds, at least not effeciently

Yes, You'd Be Rewarded, E.G. Lifelong Friend Of That Tribe/Town/Race Unless You Attack Them Lots, And Also Cheaper Trading Prices, Gifts, Easier To Heir Mercenaries From Them, ETC.

  10. Gredd18

    Gredd18 Giant Laser Beams

Well, It'd Progress Based Over the [Time] You'd Not Been To Their Planet, E.G. If You Come Back, A Week Later, (Real-Life) They'd Have Advanced Massively, It Would Be Based On The [Time] Away, And Then When You Visit, It Would Essentially, "Update" To The Correct Tech Level

  11. Space Core

yes but that totally breaks the save as seed system they are using, all of a sudden your a dozen planets that took up 12kb now take up 50Mb, and it only expands from there, its just not compatible with how starbound is coded

  12. Gredd18

    Gredd18 Giant Laser Beams

One Thing: How The Fuck, Do You Know How It's Coded, Yes, Seeds. Basically, MINECRAFT. That is What It Is.

well on the IRC we get to talk to Omni quite frequently, who often explains his current project, we know from the information he's given us that each planet is saved as its seed for example 1132-1224-4822 (we don't know exactly how seeds are formatted yet) but the moment a change is made on the planet the changes are saved in addition to the seed, so a civilization building would create numerous changes quite quickly as they progressed, causing save inflation (Thats why Skyrim tends to start lagging on older savegames), now all that aside, you still have to virtualize these civilizations, which takes CPU and RAM, thus massively inflating the system requirements (and making save inflation even more of an issue) basically you end up with a time clock until the game's .exe reaches its maximum ram threshold, in which you have to delete your game and start all over.

err, well as more things change the save grows larger and takes longer to read hence lag, if the player is not the only one making changes you increase this exponentialy, and a save game that should last a few years, lasts a few months, Plus if the game has to keep track of these civilizations, it needs more ram (Random Access Memory) to remember them, now a .exe ( a application) has a maximum amount of Ram it's allowed to use, for a 32-bit application (i can't imagine Starbound having a 64-bit executable) that is one gigabyte, if you hit that, LAG city, if it doesn't crash out right, as Starbound stands it removes changes on planets that have not been visited for awhile in order to act as automatic maintenance (not totally rock solid yet devs may change that, also your homeworld well never be deleted.)

Even if Starbound does get a 64-bit .exe the problem still exists it well just take longer to cap out

  19. Gredd18

    Gredd18 Giant Laser Beams

One. I Am A Gamer, I Know What RAM and .exe's Are. Two. The Game Would Only Have The Area (Planet, Space Station, ETC) Taking Up Ram. And, The Changes Overwrite The Old Save, Otherwise My Terraria World Would Be Unplayable.

  20. Space Core

    Space Core Pangalactic Porcupine

    A. You asked me to explain it simply

B.The moment you add civilizations that can progress they have to be virtualized which mean s they take up ram, data calculations can't just happen in thin air.

    C. This is not how Terraria saves data as Terraria only has up to five worlds at any given time making the grid save system viable, not to mention Terraria does NOT need to virtualize there are no goblin villages springing up or progressing, all changes are made by the player or by enemies near the player.
