I thought about posting this and try to add to electricity here, but after a friend's advisement I've decided to make a separate thread since a security system already implies/assumes that a wiring/electrical system is in place. Basically my idea is for security systems to be researched and set up inside and around bases, whether those bases are your own or NPC's, or just any enemy in general. A security system that would be triggered by either cameras (automated or otherwise), motion sensors, infrared lasers, pressure plates and anything else the community could come up with. Security Access Doors: Only NPC's and players with certain levels of access can enter/exit them. If breached (by destroying them in some way), it would sound the alarm system. Camera's: Non-automated cameras may scan left and right, but will not sound alarm unless an NPC is watching the screens in the control room. Automated cameras can have an AI system similar to the cameras in Metal Gear Solid or Deus Ex: Human Revolutions. If the intruder is not visible, the scanning light(if there is a scanning light) or just light would be green. If it spots an intruder for a second and then the intruder disappears from view, the camera will stay locked onto that area for a few seconds with a yellow light. If the intruder is spotted and stays in view, then it locks onto them with a red light, setting off the alarm system. Idea by nic329 - Some way to avoid players just blocking cameras with blocks (if it's possible to place blocks anywhere). Maybe have the cameras 'detect' their surroundings when they're placed and if it changes it sets off an alarm? Just an idea. Idea by dra6o0n - The cameras have a blueprint detection that if the base is altered the alarm is sounded and patrol bot is sent to check if there is any enemies about. If it is a player base, the player is also notified and can go check for himself. Enemies can have squads to go search, or a patrol bot. If the patrol bot finds nothing and returns, then the alarm turns off and nothing happens. If the patrol bot finds an enemy, it will sound the alarm. If the patrol bot doesn't return, the alarm is still sounded. Camera system with no intruder: [NOTE: Only the camera, camera/alarm lights and turret are done by me, I take no credit for the original screenshot(and monster/creature), it belongs to Chucklefish Games.] Camera system on alert, intruder spotted: Sensors: Motion sensors and infrared lasers could be set up around the base to protect against intruders. They could set up alarms or traps, or both! Control room: Where every part of the system can be activated or deactivated. If you have non-automated cameras, you would need an NPC to watch the camera systems here. There would be screens he would be watching, and he'd trigger the alarm if anyone was in sight. Alarm Sirens: The alarm system would consist of actual alarms placed around the base or location that would alert nearby NPC's that there is an intruder. The alarms would have 2 different sounds. One sound for "Caution" and one for "Alert". Caution would be for when a camera is tampered with and there is a chance an intruder has breached the security system. Alert would be for when it's 100% certain there is an intruder. Defenses: Turrets will come out and aim at the intruder if the camera has it in sight. Bots can come out and patrol the area until the alarms turn off. Maybe inventive traps such as flame throwers in the walls, explosives that go off when tripped, or guns set off to motion. Idea by Inferno_Draconis - These traps would be mainly hidden from sight, hidden in the floor and ceiling tiles, or the walls. Although they'd be marked for the owner/creator so he can see where his traps are if he wants to change or remove them. Idea by SnakeBigBoss24 - Some sort of notification to alert you that your base is under attack or has been breached while you away from it. This could be a pop up on the HUD, an item or placed in the menu somewhere. I hope it's okay that I edited screenshots to show what I had in mind >_> Any more ideas or additions to this system are more than welcome.
I like the idea, woudln't it be pretty cool to have alien/hostile attackers when on board the space station?
It might be pretty cool, but I didn't really mean for the idea to be stuck to the space station, or used on the station at all since I think it's supposed to be more of a safe haven. I meant for this to be used on planet bases, whether it be a player's base or enemy's. I edited the main post because I forgot to put in defenses! A security system wouldn't amount to much without a turret or something. Haha.
This Idea = I support. It will be a good idea to have some sort of device to alert you when your Base/HQ is being breached by enemies while you're somewhere else.
i like the idea, while not really needed for the space station i think it'd be great as a defensive system for when a player is out exploring and having some sort of security defense would keep any monsters/enemies at bay more so especially if there is some sort of starbound version of the "bloodmoon" in terraria
Good idea, I'll add it to the OP. I didn't mean for it to be in the space station, but it was the easiest area to show how it might look in a base area. I also mean that the security can be used by enemies as well, so that if you come across an enemy base, they may have a security system set up. I think it could add a lot to the game.
well if there are bases with systems i hope il get to use a stun gun type thing like in deus ex:human revolution to temporarily shut them down or something
This would be a great idea for planet side systems. Maybe some Aliens that could disable/sneak past the systems if they aren't discovered yet?
There should be ways of bypassing security, like for cameras (if they're just normal cameras) you could cloak or sneak by them! Maybe some sort of EMP gun or grenades could be used against other security defenses. If there are some sneaky aliens, I suppose they would have special ways of getting inside your base. Maybe teleporting aliens/monsters could just bypass it all and shut off your system from the control room if it's close enough? That'd be troublesome, but pretty cool.
But most bases at first the control room is gonna be near the outside for quite a bit until the players been there for awhile, or explored a few planets and they're prepared for that type of thing. Maybe like a upgradable system that gets more advanced as you progress and discover more alien types and different environments? Like the space station?
I was just making a speculation on the idea. I don't know if there will be teleporting monsters, and if there are, I don't know how many there will be and how often you can encounter them. I doubt it will be that often, if at all. The whole security system has to be researched, and I suppose there can be upgrades to every part of it. Like, getting more efficient cameras or stronger turrets. It's more of something that should be available as to something that is "necessary".
We can have sci fi 'dungeons' or secret labs by the npc factions that disallows anyone to enter it, maybe its a secret military area that's hidden underground so it's full secured and full of cameras and high tech security and forces. If we have stealth, we can put that into play.
Nice presentation! really helps visualize the intended effect! I totally agree with having rigged up security systems Course mine will probably linked to pressurized acid that sprays into the room.... but that is just me
Oh, that sounds devious I would love to have all sorts of different traps to give intruders what they deserve.
One possible security system could be hidden guns. Though clearly marked out to whoever placed them, these guns would be hidden in floors, ceilings and wall panels, opening up only when the alarm is tripped. Imagine walking down an empty corridor, approaching a seemingly undefended security door. Then you hear an ominous "beep" as you trip a hidden laser tripwire, and suddenly the walls are bristling with heavy-duty turrets, all trained on you. "Oh, for the love of-" <BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM>
i wonder how well these will work if we have a building/digging system. see a camera up ahead, no problem. build a wall to block its view and dig under its sight range. hopefully that wont happen but it should be considered when taking security systems into account.
I already had the idea of the turrets being hidden but I guess it wasn't too clear. However I added your idea of the guns (and all traps) being hidden until set off, but marked for the person who placed them. That's a really good point! It would be a tough pickle to figure out, but I think something could be thought up...I added this to the main post.
Maybe the bases are blueprinted so any changes will cause the system to become paranoid and send forces to check it out? This makes those bypasses not workable because all you will do is alert the enemy. Camera: Wth there's a wall popping up out of nowhere! Security: 10-4 we'll send a squad there. If the security forces don't see any threat (characters/monsters) they just go 'all clear' with the blueprint updated to have the wall in it. They keep 2 blueprints, the new and old, the old blueprint is before any changes occuring and the new blueprint always changes to show that a lot of interference can occur in the base.
