Secret area of the Lunar Base!

I've been meaning to join the forums for a while now, but after this discovery I really feel I HAVE to. I want to take you all through my personal journey.

There was this thing that bugged me about a certain spot in the lunar base. It looked like a room but the passage was too narrow to fit through.

What a tease.

I hadn't read anything about it so I just figured it must be unfinished content or something. Then one day it hits me like a speeding bus: MORPH BALL!


I revisited the mission with the appropriate tech and located the most opportune entrance.

Viola!

Except all I found was a few odd crates and a locked door. On the wall there were some strange symbols. Using the wiring tool I found that the door and symbols were wire together along with some other objects off screen. Alas I was not able to pinpoint their activation mechanisms and chalked it up to, again, unfinished content.

Then my my brother made a discovery, independent of my own:

A hidden switch!

He couldn't reach it himself, however. He insists on playing in hardcore his first time through the game (whatever, bro) so he hasn't gotten as far as me and this switch requires ROCKET BOOTS to reach.

Upon seeing this, I had to drop what I was doing and re-revisit the lunar base. I flipped the switch and returned to the enigmatic room to discover:

Still locked, however. There was an additional switch still hidden some where in the base. But now that I knew what I was looking for, it didn't take too long.


This spot above this building can be entered via morph ball.

Roll thru and you come to a shaft. Rocket boot your way up there and flip the switch.

I returned to the secret room and found both runes lit and the mining hatch open.

What I found inside was a treasure beyond than anything I had imagined.

It's little black cat.

Conveniently, there's a capture ball in the chest beside it. Just throw the capture ball (you don't have to weaken it) and release the cat where ever you want. The cat will follow you and not despawn if you leave the area or log out, but it won't teleport with you. Don't leave it running around in the instance or you'll have to do the whole thing over again.

Awesome Easter egg, and a movie reference. I'm so pound of myself for finding the thing, but I'm too lazy to edit the wiki. Someone get on that.

I had never considered using morphball to get in there, I had been squeezing myself into the little secret areas like that with a grappling hook

RIP Carbo Catcher. I managed to die to the facility boss wearing full titanium gear, having gone back to try for chest diamonds. Sometimes you win, and sometimes the Horror does like 300 damage a second when you're not near any of his beams.

I've been cured of my hardcore addiction by that experience. The next time I have an itch for permadeath, I'll have a stick of gum. Or play Diablo 3. Whatever.

 

I a similar passage in mission 3, but it didn't turn up anything interesting. I could be wrong, though.

 

You know how I play Hardcore? I kill it with a Normal char, then give the items to my Hardcore.

Just kidding. I'm just that Hardcore. Also a tad psychotic. Or mostly psychotic. Actually, I'm fine. Just ignore the fact I'm growing tentacles and a crusty crystalline exterior.

Unfortunately, nothing noteworthy. I did find the Predatory Costume Chest Piece I was missing though. The final boss is kind of a chump when punched in the face with an Impervium Spear too.

 

There's a similar room underneath the outpost. There's a small room with a guy, and if you give him ten climbing ropes he gives you a cool mask. Still not as good as a cat though.

well your a bit late on the find considering alot have people have all ready found the secret in the lunar base. granted i dunno about the guides on the forums but on the steam guides there are plenty

 

I try to avoid the Steam Forums like the plague. It's incredibly toxic over there in general, not just the Starbound one.

 

i forgot where exactly it is, but if you go up and to the right in one of the hills in mission 3, you get a savage mask in a chest in a cave

but you dont need morphball for it
