If you're like me and went through metroid Prime 1,2 and 3 scanning every single last scan-able thing just to learn about the environment, to know what kind of planet you're on and such then you'd know what i'm talking about. In Metroid Prime 1 on the Frigate, i loved scanning everything. It told me in detail as to what the hell the big dead thing in the first room was, Forshadowed the big boss battle at the end of the frigate level and it told you stuff like "this dude was partially eaten and he was killed by acid." Sure the stuff in the rest of the game is interesting to scan but nonetheless, if the starbound team were to implement some sort of scanning system, i dont want just a name of the creature, i'd like to know what species, its status, a little bit about the species, how to dispatch/deal with it and maybe his favorite song from David Bowies Hunky-Dory Album.

I think that could work out great, but what about the fact that the monsters are randomly generated?

I'm pretty sure the developers have confirmed a catalogue tool long ago.
That's exactly why there should be a catalogue.

It would be awesome if monsters could be scanned.
