Saw a good point get made; why are we allowed to ransack villages without repercussions?

Going off the new lore for the game we're cadets of what was more or less a full blown intergalactic peace keeping faction; and now we're running around looting villages of all of their goods, items, furniture, etc and the NPC's just sit and watch. Shouldn't we, idk, get like a bounty on our head if it gets witnessed, maybe get attack by the guards, something?

    What do you all think?

Sure it makes sense, but in the end, what does it matter? If you are taking the stuff, whether they attack you or not is irrelevant. The risk of being attacked won't stop someone from taking something they wanted from the village. And if you include a bounty figure, you would run into the issue of psychic guards across the whole galaxy, which is just stupid. (Early Bethesda games had this issue and no one liked it.)

In the end, the consequences don't matter.

They might think that not doing anything is good for your character's serious pathological kleptomania.

Ha ha, YES! You should have to slaughter an entire village to get that Floran chair you want.

But really, I do find it a little strange that they let you just take the stuff though, yes. Maybe there is a solution to this though, so people do react when you take their stuff. Some way to get the furniture you want without wiping a village off the map.

That was the point of adding the inspection feature so you didnt have to take anything.

In the wiki in the Upcoming features it says that in the future on an unknown time frame that villagers will follow the player more aggressively if they steal stuff. Also personally I think it is even more disturbing that the npcs let complete strangers roam in their houses, but you can't really go around, dimensionally speaking.

Well, that's just how life as a video game NPC is, regardless of dimension or camera placement.

This just made me think back to a short comic someone drew a few years ago, of his Avian character 'looting an Avian village.
He barges into this house and threatens the avian seamstress there with his pistol, but then looks around and sees the place is - to be blunt - a dump. So he tells her he'll come back when she's worth stealing from, but then notices the roof tiles and thinks they'd look good on his ship so starts stealing those while the poor avian female just stares in disbelief as he dismantles her roof.

I've always worried more about the guards reacting to me poking things with my MM than the owners of the items personally x)

Ah, but it actually does. In terms of my personal story, it really takes me out of the game when I realize that NPC's are oblivious, and I will totally game the system, and remove the village as if it never existed. HOWEVER, if they actually attacked me, called the guards, etc, then I am making an in game choice, and yes, I can still take the stuff, murder the guards and inhabitants, and go on. But, then, that is an in-game choice I am making. One of the BIG things that really sold me on starbound, is that while there are caveat's, and it is more game then simulation, the game really lives by it's own rules. Up to and including needing to farm in order to feed yourself. While it 'only mattered' in the early game until you could build a stockpile, it bled into other aspects of the game too. Needing to stop for the night on a snow planet, and build a little enclosure with a fire in order to stay warm.....it made survival matter, as opposed to being a given. And, I suppose, I really liked that flavor.

would be interesting if we could wind up going rogue from the protectorate.

I find it a little... interesting... that they let you ransack and disassemble their homes, but they'll come after you if you pull your weapon to kill a monster that's attacking them. Had the entirety of a town's guards on my tail at one point from killing something that was well out of sight of the village. Cretans. Next time I'll just let them get eaten by the flying hipponoscerus monster.

I like to think that the Protectorate is actually corrupt and oppressive towards villagers, and that as a member of the Protectorate you're just exercising a little "defense" of their village by stopping by and downloading entire houses into your inventory.

Perhaps some kind of karma system could be implemented, enough bad or good karma and you'll start to see special perks and bonuses.

i dunno if the protectorate is corrupt, with a karma system in place it could just be you that goes corrupt, resulting in folks trying to get you to pay fines for your deeds.

Don't give Chucklefish any ideas; I don't want to be unavoidably punished for my wrongdoings, I just want to steal from the village while harassing/avoiding/murdering the local authorities.

Don't worry. It could be worse. At least they won't make rendom settlers give you gifts (That you have to accept) for doing good things; and the possible bounty hunters could drop some awesome loot.
