Just a twisted idea I came to think of. I know that this wouldn't fit the game overall, but hey- It's twisted enough to fit right in. I know that RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. Although what I am proposing is a game mode in which you could control more than one unit (players or monsters etc) at the same time. Imagine the ability to see the map in a zoomed out perspective, seeing more of the map, the ability to zoom in and out, and at the same time take control of more than one player (and or) monsters. You select multiple players (characters / NPCs / Mercenaries) on the map, and from there it would function more like the old Final Fantasy games. The idea is that you wouldn't be able to control a monster before you have tamed it, but by doing so, you could control a horde of monsters if you tamed a big amount of monsters. I do realize that this idea is a little far fetched for the devs, even so I decided to post this thread because in my perspective this would give the game another dimension of playability. This would also open up a larger scale of PvP battles. Imagine playing against your friend on a planet, your base is far away from your friend's base. You make up your own rules, so this time you decided that the goal is to smash each other's bases, the one who smashes the base completely first wins. Your friend unleashes a huge horde of monsters, you then select your gunners and set them up in a defensive manner, the monsters overwhelm them 8/7 but then your ION Cannon (Kinda exaggerating but at least you get the idea) destroys his base BOOM you win.
well i have an idea you might like. how about it being like an arcade game in your ship. kinda like the avatar game. where its a third person game with a strategy game in it too.
Sure I wouldn't mind that, although that's not what I had in mind. What I had in mind was to use the actual game, just give it a zoom function, ability to zoom in and out, as well as control more than your own character. Control the character like normal if you wanted, but also the ability to switch to RTS mode and select more mercenaries and possibly also more characters, as well as monsters etc. To damage another building, or find resources, stay on guard, etc etc. I know it's far fetched, that's why I'm not going to argue, just want to see people's opinion.
Great idea! But maybe IF this gets into the game there sould be a limt on how many units you can select? Thats just my two cents.
It would be nice to do so when You are defending planets that are controled by You. And I do not think that RTS does not work in Sandbox Exploration game - I believe that mixing diffrent game types is giving the best results (providing that somebody will not overdo this, and mix them reasonably).
Sounds like a great idea for a mod, or for a special planet type! Or possibly for home planets? Mind control device... Or a robot control center. For random planets it'd just take out all the challenge, not to mention how it would mess up all the main quest planets.
Voted no. I feel this does not fit into Starbound and would either be too shallow or not worth the dev time.
I voted for maybe. If it's like an event that can be started or something like a capture-the-flag mini-game or kinda like the goblin invasion event in Terraria where you defend your NPCs, then it's a good bonus. Oh, and have a bunch of people join groups (say maximum of eight players per group) and these groups have a specific color, (like in Terarria; Blue, Red, Yellow, Green) and these colors determine the color of the creeps/mobs/monsters on your side. And lastly, there's gotta be a time limit say, 1-3 minutes. I love coffee. But i won't go for "manually" controlling a horde of monsters, I think it doesn't really fit in with Starbound.
how about having waves of enemies(like a blood moon in Terraria or left 4 dead) then having to fend them off?
I don't generally like the idea of limitations, but if it would be necessary to "balance" the outcome, then sure, it's a good thing for that cause. Agree. Yeah, good thinking, it would make things a bit too easy if you could switch to RTS mode at any time you wanted. So having it limited to home planets is a good idea. Or to have it as a seperate playing style, like you would choose mediumcore, hardcore, etc for your character in Terraria, in Starbound it could introduce RTS Mode for the character, but in such you wouldn't be able to play with a normal character in multiplayer. (Probably) Understand your point of view, negative replies are always best when explained. In my own opinion, it's a far fetched idea, would take up a lot of time, so I wouldn't want this to be stressed in any way, like the devs could make this work after release, if they wanted. Good idea, well in the way I was thinking, you wouldn't have to constantly control them, just tell them where to go and what to do. Like if you want them to defend some area, they would stay around that area and defend it. If you wanted them to search for threats then they would search around the area for threats etc, I imagined it like that. Like if you wanted gunners to defend some area, you could either do it in a sloppy way and let them walk around freely, but still not move outside the area of defense, or you could set them up "micro managing" your gunners, and set them out even more strategically. Like one hiding behind a bush, one just standing there ready to shoot incoming enemies etc. Yeah, for this it would be a lot easier with a "RTS Mode". Would give you more control of what's happening.
