Hello again! I wasn't quite sure wether or not to post this under blocks and crafting or gear and items so I figured I would post this in both places. I was wondering if people would like to see ropes integrated into the game. Players could craft ropes of different lengths and throw them down a large cave or building and scale down them. Or maybe rope ladders? I think it would be cool to stand at the top of something, and have a cool animation of the rope rolling over the side and dropping down. Tell me what you all think about it and don't forget to vote!

I like this. Maybe the more rope you craft, the longer it falls down? Maybe, if a mob that has fire attack can burn it, and it will start traveling up the rope? Or, mobs can destroy a link in it, causing it to fall. Rope ladders are faster than just rope. Just trying to give ideas!

Now that you mention it, I really wonder why Terraria did not do ropes or ladders. I'd kinda be disappointed if I didn't see them now.

Maybe you could attach the rope to a hoverboard, let one of your friends hold onto the rope, and then you fly away with your friend :D

Considering we're getting a grappling hook-like item that devs said won't just zip you to your location like they do in Terraria, so my guess is that it'll be a climbable rope of sorts. If that's the case then technically we already have ropes, right?

As for ladders, I'm all for it. Assuming they're not already in that is. Implementing them would probably be a little harder than you'd think since the devs would have to go and make the appropriate ladder climbing animations for each race to go along with ladders existing.

This would be very helpful for exploration of deep holes :D.

I'd support this, especially if we can expand it to tightrope-walking. For instance, having a rope grapple that can be fired in many different directions, with the option to attach the rope not only to the location you strike, but also to the ground at your feet, creating a sort of 'wood platform' that you have to balance carefully on (no shooting or fighting, and if you take a hit you fall through). You could use this to quickly make a bridge across gaps, and then establish a more permanent bridge with blocks or platforms later.

It'd also have defensive purposes for base-building in PvP, since if the only access to your home is across tightropes, and you have traps set up to shoot enemies off the ropes if they're not good at dodging, and a dangerous pit below, then you've got a nasty and effective little base defense for keeping unwanted intruders out.

I would also enjoy the addition of rope ladders and ladders in general, attached to both the back walls (a la Mega Man), and to side walls, allowing you to climb around where you need to.

the animation for sliding down a rope could kind of look like my profile picture! :DD

I just love how something as simple as this can get so many votes! It's actually good to see people upping such little things, not that sliding down a rope like a ninja is little :p

Climbing up and down a rope would sure be different. It will allow me to feel more like a ninja!

Since characters can sneak, that could be used to cross tightropes (as well as the no fighting thing).

Going further with the idea, there could be winches and pulleys and other mechanisms which automatically pull or let out rope.
Attach a bucket, and you can easily get liquid from a deep well.
Or maybe attach some kind of crate that you could fill with items. I'm not sure how big the inventory is, but in Terraria whenever i went deep it was quickly filled, if you could load it all into a crate that you've set up to automatically pull it all back up to your home (or the surface at least), that could be very useful.

Ideally, having ropes/rope ladders in Starbound isn't a bad idea at all. Especially in dungeons and cave systems where it would serve as a unique filler for staircases and platforms to which are familiar enough with. It may take time considering the animation and pre-generation of the ropes but won't be much of a worry. After all, the more, the better.

A Grappling Hook is what I would assume to be a kind of Tech, hence it being harer to get in the early stages of gameplay.

Also, ropes and ladders add to the atmosphere of a biome, or place. I'd rather have a permanent solution to climbing an unusual minibiome as well as giving it a better feel, than just grappling there with ease. Makes good for devs to do stuff with in Dungeons too.

Late to the party? The grappling hook is an item, you can see it in action here:
