Let's assume there are achievements in the game, then do you think players should be rewarded with items or pixels for achieving them? I think it would add a nice touch to achievements because I'm a person who ignores achievements and only views them as a nuisance.
I disagree. I've always loved the humor in achievement names, though I never went out hunting achievements in games. If there are achievements and if they're chosen well, I don't think there needs to be any 'reward' for getting them. Just the sense of accomplishment and bragging rights!
I think they should really limit the amount of achievements. most games have about 30 achievements, lots of them easy to get and repetitive, and you get them for just playing the game. I think they should be something that if you just play through the whole game you would only touch upon maybe 1 by accident, they should be very difficult to get and designed to give endgame players bragging rights. and they shouldn't give a reward except maybe some sort of title showing off how amazingly pro you are. I will use terraria as an example: many crappy games would have an achievement for each boss, finding a new ore, making an excalibur or a full set of hallowed armor, killing so and so number of enemies, mining so and so number of blocks. All that is stuff you do naturally by playing the game, and you are rewarded because thats stuff you do to progress ingame, they should not be achievements. achievements should all be fully optional challenges you do for fun for little reward, and require you to be really good at the game, something players who just grind and get the best everything may not have the skill level to do. such as doing all 3 hardmode bosses at once or the dungeon guardian. (that is seriously all I would say for terraria, due to the lack of things that remain difficult once you have endgame gear)
I think if there will be rewards for something like that...they should just be called Challenges and remain optional, but will give some kind amount of pixels or something small. But I still think there should be achievements for bragging rights and for fun.
Yes, as I did say in a different thread, rewards would be a really good idea because then it would give you some sort of actual "achievement" instead of just saying you did something that your friend did too. Most of the achievements (since they do give you something good hopefully) should be pretty challenging instead of, jump off a bridge with 10 blocks or whatever. They should be, killing a certain boss, a certain amount of creature that gives you better stuff the more you kill them, or exploring completely your first world, 5th, and so on.
but those sorts of things will already naturally give you rewards in some form or another. I think achievements should just stay the way they do for all games. Getting an achievement gives you a sense of accomplishment even if you don't get an ingame reward anyway. I'd rather have a steady progression of achievements than to have a few hard endgame ones that reward you, as the endgame stuff (like bosses and quests) will reward you achievement or not, and I'd like to be able to look at my steam and see my progress through collecting the achievements. However, if there was an NPC that rewarded you with something really minor for achievements like small sums of pixels, I wouldn't mind. I still don't think we need rewards to feel accomplished for getting achievements, though.
