Inventory management is something I think about a lot, considering the vast number of items we can potentially have at any given time. With that in mind, I had made a suggestion earlier here: http://community.playstarbound.com/...ntory-management-features-functionality.6374/ I was considering other options that could help in this area, and I came up with having resource nodes for crafting stations! The Idea is Actually Fairly Simple By having some sort of storage unit such as a chest within a close proximity to, or 'linked' to a crafting station, items inside would automatically be taken into consideration & used when items you can create are displayed. Example: If I need 10 Apple Wood Planks to make 1 Apple Bark Vest, and I have 8 Apple Wood Planks in a chest near my crafting station, and 2 in my inventory, I would be able to make my Apple Bark Vest without looting the chest! Progression Options This feature could be built upon as we complete more research etc., for us to gain other options as well, such as the ability to link resource nodes to multiple crafting stations, or for more advanced crafting stations to have multiple resource nodes, that are further away.
I think this is a great idea! "simple yet effective" it would help to build complex machinery that need a lot of parts
This would be a really helpful idea! but I have something to add if you don't mind. Maybe you could make it a "cost for reward" feature and have the "node chests" be linked via pipes that are hand placed as furniture type blocks. (as in they go between the foreground and background) on the station though all storage containers should be assumed to be linked to the crafting stations (if the devs are not already planning this.) The research upgrades you mentioned could instead be. Pneumatics upgrade (longer pipes from crafting station allowed) Cargo Handling upgrade (more chests allowed to be linked) etc etc. just thought I would say that, kinda popped into my head as I was reading.
We're on the same page ^_^ I was thinking of this also, but didn't get specific beyond 'linking' since it would vary a lot depending on the type of crafting station we'll be working with. For example having a crate or chest close to a basic wood crafting station would probably be good enough for that, but for a metal working station we may need a trough or piping for crafting ore into blocks/bricks etc. Edit: Fixed grammar ^
i think that would complicate what is intended to be a simplifier in ui , i mean constructing a pipe network for crafting using items in other inventories? this sound like a factory thing.... not a bad idea but its completely devoid of the general idea with the thread here.. well, the first part anyway..
I think the pipe idea isn't easy and simple enough If you are out exploring and you make a chest and crafting table, I think it would be a bit of a waste to link them with pipes
I like this idea! I this it would be cool to have like a room dedicated for storage with pipes linking them to a crafting station in a separate room. It would add to the aesthetics of a building, especially if one was building a laboratory( like me ) or a factory of some sort. I think the pipes are meant as an upgrade to what was suggested, and would be more useful in a permanent place. If you are exploring, you would only need the basic un-upgraded version, which could simply be a chest placed next to the crafting station to automatically link them up.
That is very useful... i hate playing MC and having to open the chest every time i need something... and in Terraria too... this is a great idea!!! also, this couldbe that if you have a chest at least at 5 blocks of the crafting station, you can do this, but also have special chests, that it doesn't matter where they are, you can use the items in them to craft things anywhere else!
This idea is incredibly useful. Another thing: Chest filters. I mean, so that way you can tell the chest not to offer certain items for crafting. Or an automatic mining machine that will filter what it mines into different chests, and have the chests around your crafting station so you can use the loot immediately.
