This is a much better compromise.

And yes I do read other peoples posts.

But maybe it should break after like 3 uses.
then you get the message then you have a reason to build the crafting table. (Instead of mining all you can before making the crafting table )(I could see people exploiting this way)

Still I think if you seriously hate pickaxes.

They could potentially more tightly script the first few missions (from pickup up he manipulator to building the first table).

Basically if you tried to mine something not required for those first few missions then it will tell you you need to conserve the reaming energy in the matter manipulator.
so you can chop down a bunch of trees, mine some stone and coal but anything else would yell at you for wasting the little remaining energy.

This would help to serve as a basic tutorial and of course after you complete it the manipulator breaks and your not so shiny new pickax would function exactly as it does now.

You would have the manipulator long enough to gain an appreciation for the advanced mana manipulator and make you want to work your way back up to being able to repair it later in the game.

Also until we see how server side characters work with mods you cant just point to a mod and say "this fixes your issue". A lot of us intend to play on servers and will presumably (once chars are server side) wont just be able to install any mod we want.

Oh how I love people like you who speak for everyone when you don't have any support behind you in your own thread. I've not yet seen another post in this thread that completely agrees with you. Point is, they aren't going to do this. They just won't. So stop whining over pathetic nuances and speak for yourself. Go mod your game for your own fun. Don't try and ruin the majority.

Note: i did not find that thread when I was searching for anything on this in the suggestions forums.
I know it had been discussed in the general section of the forums but I did not see that thread or any thread relating when trying to search for pickaxe related topics in the suggestions section of the forums.

I mean, that's basically why I didn't chime in until now. I'm totally on board with this idea. I was literally angry and shut down the game for a day when I realized I had to use a pickaxe in this space-age game. I had *just* finished Terraria and was ready for a new experience.

And I am working on my own mod for some of the frustratingly out of theme elements. I'd rather see these things show up in the final game though, NOT in a mod.

I know what it means. :)
    I'm just a smartass.
Over-Powered. As I've stated in my first comment.
Technology at the start of the game shouldn't be advanced. So, removing pickaxes entirely will ruin the experience of having to start from the ground up survival and get resources. Maybe if there was a weave between upgrading the Matter Manipulator and having to use the pickaxes, sure. But honestly, it shouldn't be a replacement.

We're asking for a sprite change. There is no balance issue. At all. It's 100% thematic. Overpowered and 'balance' doesn't come into the equation.

Because it doesn't feel like I'm starting a game off with challenge if I have a really high-tec piece of equipment that can reach further in range, and still do all of it's original purposes. It would become a multi tool. From what I've read from Zero, It doesn't sound like just a sprite change, and it's just a sprite that fits the original game of resourceful survival. It's symbolism. The pickaxe has it's place in games like this, and there should be a function where you guys could just change the texture of it, if that's all you want. I just don't want it to affect *my* experience. They added the matter manipulator as it's own purposeful tool. I've seen it be used for more than just 5 minutes in every play through I've watched.

Plus, there are plenty of Sci-Fi themed games/shows that still have Pickaxes involved. Pickaxes are the original mining tool. If anything needs be done with the matter manipulator, it doesn't need to override pickaxes, and it should take on a different purpose than just resource collecting. Pickaxes hold there place very well, and should.

Guys, I'd be seriously surprised if Chucklefish did not implement something else to do with the Matter Manipulator with how much it is talked about on the forums.

Coincidentally, I don't see Pickaxes being removed, either.

I think the game is moving in a positive direction for all people and races.

It's not that pickaxes would suddenly become useless in the future. Ya if you were stranded somewhere and your survival depended on it you would build tools out of stone that's perfectly fine. The flaw here is that in starbound you aren't stranded with nothing for you to use to dig. You already have a super high tech space age digging tool yet you still decide to build a stone pickaxe and somehow the pickaxe is better at mining than the high tech space age tool that you already had. This is where the argument of build what you must to survive fails and why people that are on the side against pickaxes think they are so out of place in starbound.

Additionally we are looking for things that can help set starbound apart fro terraria and mixing up the way people mine with a cool toy like the matter manipulator is seen by some as an awesome opportunity that was wasted by having it immediately replaced by the pickaxe.

Finally the actual act of digging when you are mining is boring. Finding an ore you need or breaking through into a cave or dungeon that's where the fun is. So why not have a tool like the matter manipulator that adds a little character and new take on the least fun aspect of the game, the actual digging.

Let me overexaggerate a detailed description of each action.

"Ruthlessly beating the ground as sweat drips from your face, the tip of your sharp pickaxe plunges deep into the earth, and bits of dirt and rock fly into the air, which you store in your backpack for no reason at all. You create a massive hole within a few minutes, and discover the entrance to a cavern. You plunge your body into the hole, before you even decide that it may be really deep and break your legs. As you crash into the cavern floor, nothing happens to your legs, but you feel a warm pain run through you. You look over to discover a glimmer of light, and approach it. You take an already flaming torch out of your backpack and shove it into the hard stone wall. Gold! You raise your pickaxe and strike a might blow into the vein of ore. Huge gold rocks fall onto the ground, and you go to strike once more. Suddenly, a sharp crack breaks the silence, and your pickaxe shatters! Your hands are left splintered, and you use your matter manipulator to place dirt up until you reach the cavern entrance to return home."

Now, the exact same thing, but with the Matter Manipulator.

"You point your cool science thing at the ground and shoot a laser beam with a pointless "Pew Pew!" noise that you create with your mouth. Bits of dirt and rock fly into the air, which you store in your backpack for no reason at all. You create a decent sized dent within a few minutes, and discover the entrance to a cavern. Gold! You shoot your cool science beam thing at the ore vein and Huge gold rocks fall onto the ground, and you go to shoot it some more. Suddenly, the beam grows ill and distorted, and the damn batteries dies, and the piece of machinery convulses with a crackle of energy. You attempt to use the same tool to build an ugly tower to return to the entrance, but remember that you just broke it. You then release your black hole of an inventory onto the ground and start stacking dirt with your hands/fins/feather(hand/wings?)/robot-grabber/ape-hands. You long afterwards reach the top of the cave and realize that you don't have enough gold to repair your science thing. You go home and try and think of a way to reinvent a matter manipulator from complete scratch. Oh! You know! You'll make a pickaxe and spend a year getting resources to build electronic technology! You're brilliant!"

Now, this was more for laughs than for proving a point, but maybe you'll appreciate my wasting of time on this long post. ;)
