Removing wood as a fuel source adds a lot to the game by limiting our bouncing between planets.

But doing that is so alien to me to begin with. I'm not against scarce coal or anything but I've been seeing a lot of people doing that and I straight up don't get it.

No-one has self control it would seem. Then again if people want to hop planet to planet like a mad man then they should be allowed to? is that not in itself a style of play? It's certainly not my style but clearly it's someone else's.

I like spending a lot of time on one planet to soak up its atmosphere, otherwise it gains no character and becomes another random dot in the stars.

From what I've seen, rare ore generation has dramatically increased, thus making coal appear more rare. I've yet to stumble on a world where I felt the coal generation was worse than before, which is why I would really like to see some of these people post coordinates.

I've also noticed some of the people stating "Well, I left that world long ago!" Which tells me they were either able to find enough coal to leave, or someone helped them out. This however leads to my next point. We're in beta right now, which means we need to be recording every single bug and fluke we encounter. If you encountered a world where you felt the ore generation was wacky and didn't record the coordinates for the devs, but instead chose to complain about it on the forums without any way of demonstrating said issue, you've failed as a Beta Tester. THIS ISN'T STARBOUND EARLY RELEASE!

That's not how bugs work. Everything you have said so far makes you look arrogant, incorrect, and not up for beta testing. Also:

    It's a bug. Conversation over.

Unfortunately I did delete the 2 coal character.

If it occurs again (and I choose not to wait for a fix,) I'll gladly share the coordinates.

Results are going to vary somewhat as I don't think the seed controls how much of each ore appears that exactly (like how loot found in dungeons is random.)

From all the issues and statements made by people it seems like the spawn code is the biggest issue.

Some planets have a lot of coal, some pretty much none, that's not a huge problem unto itself. The problem is that characters are spawning in orbit of planets that lack coal and other fuel sources. It's probably a bug with the ore generation, that's true, but really the spawn information should probably be tweaked a bit. I'd propose changing the ore generation so every Threat 1 world *must* have a reasonable amount of coal. Either that, or new players *must* spawn on Threat 1 worlds that have coal or, possibly, on Threat 1 worlds with 2+ moons and/or 2+ other planets in system just in case the RNG doesn't give them much.

That said the monster and ore issues other people are reporting may be related to the Threat level problem that I've seen posts about. If starting worlds must be Threat 1 and that's currently bugged it's possible new characters are getting put on worlds they were never meant to be on.

Yeah starter planet is very coal poor. Im ok with wood not being a fuel but wouldnt mind the coal rates getting tweaked but I know its a bug and yeah I look forward to it getting fixed

Eh, I'll just leave this here ... (Thanks, luz)

    Code:
    2013-12-11 16:52:06 <Tiy> so coming this patch
    [...]
2013-12-11 16:56:45 <Tiy> you can now make coal
    2013-12-11 16:56:47 <Tiy> by smelting 10 wood

That's a complete joke of a ratio but at least it can be modded (in theory).

Can we also smelt wood by burning it in decorative fireplaces? Because... stuff... holiday season... I'm confused.

10 to 1 is horrid... At that rate I can turn my raw wood into 100 coal because my planet is pretty bare... Thats a full stack of 1000

Here you go for those who keep on saying CORDS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.. Feast your eyes on my spawn world. x -33090278 y -23244931 I've only found enough coal for 198 fuel and i've been digging under the surface. I haven't found much. most of it came from underneath the apex village.

Also look at how it set up. One planet in the system the nearest system has NO PLANETS, and the ones after that have ab unch of planets yet i don't have the coal to access them in a way that doesn't seem grindy

Meh, its not a really bad ratio. Considering you get upwards of 10 wood per tree, and wood after a certain point isn't super useful besides torches.

Besides, this way wood isn't the best fuel to use. But its still there as a fuel.

In a way I do think using wood as fuel made the other fuels much less valuable, as wood was such an abundant resource. If it does get readded, it would have to be something like 4wood:1fuel.

EDIT: Just realized charcoal will soon be craftable... good alternative idea.

So, I agree Coal should be more abundant generally. Increase coal spawns, somewhat - but not too much, because, yes, it should require that dreaded word - EFFORT - to move to another planet.

That said, I *DO* think that it shouldn't be trivial to get enough fuel to fly to the next planet. Why? Because then why bother with fuel in the first place?

I find there is a group of people who absolutely insist that their view is the only correct one, and it tends to be these people, who are easily frustrated and do not like challenge, who complain complain complain about elements that actually work quite well. So by all means, increase coal spawns, but not to the point to make the game even more trivial. Also, keeping wood from being an usable fuel is a good idea, as wood is so abundant it is ridiculous.

No, you shouldnt. Effort should be required to move between planets, and if you are running out of coal quickly, I imagine it is because you are planet hopping over and over to find easily accessible materials on the surface.

There should be effort required, or else the whole experience will feel cheap and throwaway. If its going to be that easy, take fuel out entirely so that people dont have to actually put forth any effort to explore.
