Remove/improve hunger system?

If meat replenished health I wouldn't hate the hunger system as much as I do. Bread gives me health but a big ole' steak doesn't? Hopefully that gets fixed. Also, is there a way to upgrade the bow past steel? It takes for-freaking-ever to kill anything past tier 2 with a steel bow, and backtracking to lower diff sectors is a pain and a waste of coal. What I've been doing is just blowing all my pixels on wheat in NPC villages to craft bread because I have no desire to get deeper into the super duper exciting food crafting system. It takes up too much space to carry around every ingredient you find in hopes you will find something else (that always seems to be on another planet) to combine it with, and most of the time you only get seeds from plants growing wild....eff that.

As it stands I'd rather just do away with the hunger bar completely, but I'll wait to reserve judgement after a few more updates so we can see the mechanic fleshed out in more detail. If there were various buffs/debuffs associated with different levels of hunger or the ingredients themselves, that could be cool.

edit: just read a few more posts, and some of this stuff is already in the game. Guess I need to get on that carrot bread.

Bow only goes up to steel for now sadly.

That would be quite cool, though what would be used to determine how good the food is that you cook? Tier based cooking areas that can be upgraded every 2 or so sectors? I would say some cooking attribute, but then people would just rage overthat.

That's why you set your "Home" planet on an Alpha planet, build a base on it, and make several long straight stretches of terrain.

When you need Meat, grab your Steel Bow and proceed to one-shot a lot of mobs on those flat plains you made.

And as an added bonus, those plains can double as tree farms AND can be used as boss arenas to boot.

You're most of the way there. Combine bread with a couple carrots and voila.

Oh and a recipe if you're not Avian.

  7. .....it will be improved becuase as Ive told many people before " ITS THE BETA NOW SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN"....not to be mean...just saying its the beta...and it will change.

No shit! It's beta. WE ALL KNOW THIS. This is exactly when complaining about every little thing you don't like in the game IS warranted. You aren't doing the developers or anyone else any favors by being a smart ass and telling people to not offer suggestions and/or criticism. This is how the devs are going to get the game balanced and working, with feedback from the beta users.

Of course it does, the hunger system can be greatly improved and I've stipulated examples of how to on my other posts. It's not too hard to make it more interesting, immersive, and have it provide more fun.

Do you know why the devs made it open beta? So they could hear feedback and, guess what, you have no place to tell others what they should or shouldnt discuss.

You really don't need a mod to disable the Hunger System. All you have to do is edit the player.config file, located @:

    Steamapps\common\Starbound\assets\player.cofing

    and look for the line:
    "foodDepletionRate"

Changing the value to something like 0.0005, pretty much kills hunger. I can play for hours with the Hunger Bar remaining unchanged.

If you make this change, you have to start a new character because the game only seems to read this file once, when a new character is created,

They just need to improve the system... Only make it drain hunger when you're actually doing something, make it drain none or a very very tiny amount if you're standing still.

They could also reduce the rate in general, it drains kinda quickly now.

One thing I wish they'd do, is let you start with 1-2 ready-to-eat foods.

When you first start on a world, you've got nothing but some seeds (which are useless until you make a Stone Hoe) and the Matter Manipulator.

When you start, you need to...

1). Chop at least one tree down (this takes awhile with the MM).
2). Make a crafting table (hopefully that tree gave you enough wood... if not, you need another one).
3). Get 20 Cobblestone (which takes forever)
4). Fight all the crap that attacks you while you're trying to do this.

If you spawn on a small planet, chances are it is getting dark before you even have this much done. You will very likely freeze to death unless you beam back up to your ship. If you don't freeze to death (you can use torches to stay warm), monsters will probably kill you because you've no armor and you've only got the crappy starter weapon.

    5). Make a Stone Hoe.
6). Till some soil & Plant your seeds.
7). Then the game tells you to make a campfire (more wood needed)
8). Then the game tells you to kill something and get a meat.
9). Now you need a plant fiber, so you need to find a vine and cut it down with the MM.
10). Now you can make a bow!
11). Hopefully its not night yet, go find and kill something and pray it drops a meat instead of leather (or, with the holidays going on, a Holiday Spirit)

On the 5-6 characters I started, all of them were halfway to starving by the time I finally got this done. The one WOULD have starved to death because I started on a world with only 1 tree near the beam-down point, but I got killed looking for more wood which reset the hunger meter.

And as you know, eating cooked raw alien meat only refills two bars of hunger. You're probably missing 4-6 bars by the time you get all this done.

From what I said in my previous post, editing the "foodDepletionRate" value will change how fast the Hunger bar depletes.
The default depletion rate is 0.0425
Dividing that value by 2 to 0.02125 should double the amount of time for the Hunger bar to Drain,

I would suggest experimenting with values until you find one that best melds with your play style. Just remember that when you change this value in the player.config file, you need to roll a new character for that value to take effect.

There a couple of things I would like to note here.
    1. With recent game updates, he Stone Hoe recipe does not become available until after the player completes several quests. I forget at which point this happens, but I think it comes after you cook you first hunk of alien meat.
    2. The beginning of the game involves a rather steep survival curve, but once you have acquired your first Iron Bow, it becomes easier to hunt for food, and therefore easier to survive. If by chance you end up on a world with very few trees or stone, you might consider scrapping that character and rolling a new one..

Since the surface world tends to be so hostile, I have learned to play like a mole, digging tunnels under the surface and cutting one block wide "murder holes" to shoot the mobs above. It works quite effectively for me, though it is very slow at first when using the Matter Manipulator. Patience is a virtue. :)

I know how to edit files... I just dislike the idea of editing 100 files for 100 little things I dislike to make the game enjoyable. I'm overreacting here indeed, but read my point below.

What I mean is, if many people dislike a certain thing, the devs should consider changing the default value for it to something more bearable.

I agree, food is interesting because it can have certain buffs.

Obviously removal is not an option, the OP stated it could also be -improved- so it wouldn't be annoying, which is something most people can agree with.

You should fix your tone in the comment so people can take you seriously.

I think the tone should be fixed too, but only so the sarcasm is more obvious. I thought it was serious at first too.

I honestly love the survival aspect of this game. It adds more of a challenge & makes it a bit more realistic. Also I don't think it will be removed because if you didn't notice there is to much already put into the hunger aspect, it would be such a waste of the game to remove this. I can see how it can be annoying sometimes when you miss the notification though. Maybe if they added a hunger bar at the top left of the screen? I think improving it would be the best option. Doing more damage while full would be a great idea. But the game is still in beta so they have a lot to work on, I'm sure they already have many ideas.
