The pixel cost to add an item to the list of available items to print in the 3D printer seems redundant to me. You already destroy the item in the process of putting it in the 3D printer so it's an unnecessary cost to pay pixels to catalog the item and then pixels again just to make it at a later date. In my opinion PAYING PIXELS TO MAKE THE ITEM AGAIN IS COMPLETELY FAIR. I believe removing the cost of cataloging items would also solve the problem of storage space on player ships. I find myself having to give up a lot of decorative items just to conserve space and I would rather have them cataloged than throw them away. I would just pay the pixel cost but I need to save pixels to craft armor and things like that. This isn't a huge annoyance to me since in the future I will probably have some spare pixels around to pay the cost. I think it would be more fun to just be able to just catalog items for free is all.
I've got mixed feelings about it. On the one hand you are perfectly right, paying pixels for scanning is bad, on the other hand gameplay could be way to easy if you can simply put it into the scanner without paying. I think by removing the price to scan an raise the cost of printing this problem would be solved for me.
This is a good solution. Although I agree with the OP that destroying the object should be payment enough for scanning, there needs to be another factor to avoid abuse of the system, and I think bumping the price per print is reasonable enough of a solution. Edit: that being said, I am interested to hear from someone who thinks we should pay to scan stuff in. Maybe I'm missing something
Just strip the scan cost because yeah it doesn't make sense but don't bump the price up. What's the difference between keeping items around until you got the pixel to scan and get rid of them compared to get rid of them right away and then wait until you got the then larger amount of pixel to print them again. Though given how rarely I print things I could probably not care about the raised price anyways.
I'd deal with the scanning process as well. But not for higher print price, those are relatively high as it is for some items. On the topic of prices, standard blocks could be cheaper. It takes ridiculous amounts of pixels to print light metal blocks (or any other blocks really).
I agree totally to this. Already spend 30k on background blocks of light metal and there is no sign of an end.
Just 30? Pff, that's nothing. I tossed over 200k if not way more than that already. High tier planets being literally littered with diamond ore sure help.
What if we kept the Scan to still require 25% item value, but changed the cost of printing the items reduced to 85% of the item cost? So, if you print one item, you pay 110% of the item's value. If you print two of them, you pay 195%, etc. This would keep the costs roughly the same for single-use prints (why would you even scan that if you only want one!?) but would reduce the price for multiple prints. After all, the point of a "printer" is to make copies. Hopefully those copies are cheaper than the original!
Are you not repairing your diamond pickaxes? I also want to note, that I also build a LOT, but I go to planets and strip the buildings, and take them home. Very time consuming, but it's also fun to take down entire buildings around an NPC not saying anything about you ripping his house apart
This problem may be fixed later by itself. In the recent news update they said that getting pixels seemed like a grind because all the methods of obtaining them haven't been implemented yet. That said, yes I do think the cost to scan objects in should be removed, because you have to pay a lot more just to get one out. It's just one of those things that doesn't make much sense to me. I think there should be an option where you destroy items in the printer and GAIN pixels for it. After all, it can make objects from pixels, so why shouldn't it be able to make pixels from objects?
Oh I do repair my diamond drill. With copper ore. Still works. Even works betted for drill than it did for pickaxe. What, were you wasting diamonds for it?
No, you said "High tier planets being literally littered with diamond ore sure help." That made it sound like you were going through picks =) But to stay to the topic of the thread, I agree on the pixel thing for scanning items. But what is needed is: 1) An alert in the UI when you drop an item to scan, and it's already in the system. Or a way to click a button in your inventory, when the 3D printer is open, to highlight items not in scanner. 2) An actual item you can craft, so you can put a 3D printer into your own base. And it shares it's database with the ship.
I was referring to refining diamond ore to pixels. Btw your #1 was suggested somewhere in a form that all items should have either "scanned" or "not scanned" note on the bottom of the description
What about having the option to choose whether scan and destroy without pixel cost or scan for pixels but the object stays intact. It's seems to be a smarter solutions then just removing the scanning cost.
I agree that it costs too much to scan items currently. I usually end up with tons and tons of items that are backed-up and ready to scan. But I don't want it to be free. I propose one of two options: a) Decrease the pixel cost of scanning or b) Remove the pixel cost and make it so that scanning items takes a certain amount of time depending on the item. I.e. more expensive items take more time to scan.
