The problem with disabling /admin, is you never know when some game-breaking bug happens that will make /admin necessary to fix.

If you were able to disable /admin permanently for a character, and if said bug happened, then that character is outright SCREWED.

For example, the invisible blocks on ship bug. Any mod that changes the size of any furniture that is placed in your ship that causes the furniture to poof because it won't physically fit in the spot will cause the invisible solid block bug.

Some invisible, unbreakable blocks will form where the furniture was. The only two known ways to get rid of it is a mod that is Steam Worskhop Only (and is potentially dangerous as you can accidentally nuke the collision detection in the hull of your spaceship and wind up with a broken ship where you can fall out of it or something) or by..... using /admin.

Basically, you'd empty your ship and store your junk on a planet and then delete your .shipworld file, but when you load your character back up, you got a T1 ship... but you can't upgrade because you already did the quests.

That's where you need /admin and /spawnitem shipt_.

    But....

Without /admin.... you are screwed full-stop. Unless you use the mod... but what if you accidentally punch a hole in the hull? And that's assuming you're not using GOG version of SB.... then you'd be screwed entirely as that mod is Steam-Only.

Making it toggleable would be fine with me but please please please don't remove it. Making my machinima would be so much more of a pain without it...

It's not the cheating aspect I have a problem with.

When I used the lvl 10 moon trick to obtain my lvl 10 weapons, I knew that there was a limited time to get these powerful items. At this time I didn't know you could generate lvl 10 weapons through admin mode, and so I thought that these would be special items that in the years to come would never appear again. Think of what you might say to later players invited to your multiplayer universe, " I have a powerful staff, made in the early days when these could be made. Now nothing this powerful can be found in the universe. It is special. "

It would be like getting those rare Magic The gathering Cards in first production, knowing they would never be made again.

I collected rents fervently, hoping for a weapon, and collected about 15 before the patch was applied.

When I found out you could just type them into existence, that feeling of having something rare and unique, never to appear again was gone. There was no feeling of a need to collect ore, recipes or seeds etc. because these things could be produced with /spawnitem. Sure you could will yourself to not use it, but during all the mining and effort, won't knowing you can generate these things be a drag on motivation?

But that's my experience, take it for what you think its worth. ;)

OP admits to using exploit, feels proud of accomplishment.

So OP doesn't mind cheating so long as it takes a modicum of effort, even if it was far less than what was intended by the designers.

I suggest OP finds a friend to slap his wrists with a ruler every time he attempts to use admin mode.

In that manner, OP can still use admin mode but will retain a sense of accomplishment for "overcoming adversity."

I, personally, rely pretty heavily on the /admin command for emergency invincibility in times of heavy framedrops. For me, the game locks up on occasion when a lot of enemies are on-screen, so sometimes I quickly press the p-key and hightail it out of there at 1FPS. Its annoying, but better than dying to something out of my control, and I can easily make my way back after dumping a few health packs to make up for it.

But that's just me. The only other time in any game I've considered using admin commands is either to change gamerules (like in Minecraft... Keepinventory was the best thing ever imo) or to help when It really wont matter all that much (one iron ore short of the last bar I need....).

I'll admit, there are times when I break that bit above, but I notice that I always seem to lose my drive for the game after a little while beyond doing so. It all depends really on who is playing. Outright removing the admin mode option though is really not the best idea.

Honestly, having admin mode available is such a good thing in case of bugs, especially if you use a lot of mods, and thus are more likely to encounter bugs. If there *were* an option to disable admin mode permanently, it'd probably be unwise to actually *take* that option.

If you find yourself tempted to abuse it, it might help to set yourself some rules for when you're allowed to use admin mode. (Maybe even write them down, to shore up their force in your mind?) For example, I only use admin mode 1) to spawn decorative items (not weapons or anything that gives an advantage) that are not obtainable any other way, 2) to replace items or materials lost due to a bug (not just to a really stupid mistake), or 3) to fix a problem caused by a bug. If I follow those rules, the admin mode can't undermine my enjoyment of the game at all.

The key is to decide what rules you want at the beginning of your playthrough.

    Gotcha! Pangalactic Porcupine

This game needs /admin as any Bethesda game needs console commands: To fix stuff that's broken.
I've used it to spawn capture pods and reacquire all the pets because my complete collection from 1.0 wasn't added to the collection menu.
    Same deal with fossils.
And sometimes I just die because the game decides to 'lag'/freeze for 3 seconds after which I give anything that I had lost back through commands.

This game is currently too wonky to not need /admin.

All that said, I absolutely love cheats being available in games. It gives me the opportunity to fool around with a game when I am bored playing it. Wish every game had them. :)

Admin mode is essential for mod testing.

Most games have admin commands in them these days. Hell, all Bethesda'so games do. So I hope I ruined those games for you too.
