Remove Admin mode.

First, thanks for making Starbound- it's a masterpiece.

I played through and completed the main quest, amassing a solid 60000 pixels and a fair amount of ore. I did use the lvl 10 weapon hack, and when I got a weapon the feeling was like finding a rare gem in a pile of poo.

Ending a mining mission at my home planet felt like I was bringing home some hard won loot after a lot of work, felt good!

However, I recently discovered all the admin commands that negate all that hard won feeling and rarity. I could type in anything I want and make it appear.

It just doesn't feel rewarding now, as it did after a long mining trip. Really kills the feels for me.

Anyway, I think a good remedy would be to make the admin mode an option on startup only, meaning you could never use it if you create a non-admin game.

    Thanks and best regards!

You know that's not how you use an admin mod?

Basically, the purpose of admin mode is either to check something that's difficult to test otherwise (checking whenether weapon generator is working properly by spawning few dozen weapons, test crafting system without grinding stuff, testing dummied out mission, test boss LUA script in action without worrying about dying, that kind of stuff), to fix some minor bug (don't have a Starbound example, but in Skyrim and Fallout, for instance, console is a godsend), or, for less scurpulous players, to acquire something (rare weapon, several thousand blocks for building megaproject, furniture which is improbably rare/unobtainable). Making it selectable only on startup will basically make the last two uses unavailable and also make harder to test some other stuff, disabling it altogether will also make modders lives that much harder. And best part, it will solve practically nothing, since I could hop on admin char, cheat in a mountain of gamebreaking stuff and transfer it to my "legit" character if I wanted to go on GTA-with-cheats-style rampage of gamebreaking cheese.

If you have trouble not using commands to help yourself through already not really difficult and not that long storyline, then maybe you should just, kinda, try playing something else.

I sure hope so, why would you ask Devs to remove something that's totally optional. :nurutease:

Not like you absolutly have to use the commands

Guys like me does, but it's mainly because creating guns is a business that I enjoy doing

I honestly think this would be okay as an option in the same way that it was okay when Minecraft made it an option.

Once you start using /admin for things, because you had a bs death where you fell 100 blocks through a hole and landed in core lava where all your items were lost forever, or any number of other valid reasons that I'm not going to bother listing, it can be really hard to resist the urge to just abuse access to the mode over and over until you've ruined the game for yourself.

Stuff like this is never so cut and dry as "just don't use it" because human psychology is a complicated business.

This would be great thing to add. I agree:when I learned admin commands I became obsessed. If I couldn't find enough titanium, say, I would give up and use /admin. Luckily, I learned how after I played through the game once, so I know what it feels like to play the game legit. But anyway great suggestion and I hope this gets added!

As I said, this solves exactly nothing. Well, maybe you would need to jump a few more hoops for your coveted Pink Greatsword of Cheesyness, but that's it. Why a poor willpower of a few people should be a reason for such a "feature" which, ultimately, creates more problems than solves?

And Minecraft example is slightly incorrect: commands came after introduction of Creative mode (barring mods such as Single Player Commands)

No, he's not asking to remove /admin, he's asking for the option to disable admin commands at the character creation screen. Like in minecraft, where you can choose whether your character can use commands or not. It's the details, people, the details. The title of this thread is misleading.

And I would probably stop playing if they removed /admin, I use it to build everything. I feel that building when having to worry about materials takes away the fun.

If Admin mode was forced upon you then yes I can see how this ruins the fun. But... It doesn't force it on you..

So how does this ruin the fun?

    I can't really explain it. It's - just weird.

Even if it would be an extra startup option people will abuse it if they want. If you're typing /admin ingame or adding -admin to the startoptions the result would still be the same.
Although it sounds bit rough but: you are not forced to use the commands.

FYI: if you want to disable admin commands completly then go into your starbound.config and set
    Code:
    "allowAdminCommands" : true,
    to
    Code:
    "allowAdminCommands" : false,
I personally would be one of the first that were asking for having it added back. If i'm testing some things for mods i don't want to restart the game everytime just for getting/leaving admin mode.

OK, I probably didn't explain myself the best. What I mean is this: Let's say you found an very rare weapon on some remote level 6 planet, that helps you defeat the end boss. You have a certain appreciation for that weapon and the rarity it represents. In a universe with a DISABLED (by option) admin mode, that weapon can not be typed into existence, and is truly rare. It's more about how you FEEL about all the work you have accomplished in the game and that is could not be done by simply wishing it into existence.

Come to think of it, there is a life moral here... but lets not get philosophical. :)

how could you do the level 10 weapon hack in 1.1(not 1.0) without using either /admin + /spawnitem rare(whatever) 1 '{"level":10"}' or that one mod that readds the tier 10 moon colonies?

Note: You posted this today, which means you played it in 1.1, right?

Pre 1.1 moons still have their threat level of 10. This value is stored in the planets file and chunks file upon creation and read from there even if the celestial/terrestial config changes.

This is also how I experience games. I would rather go on a huge adventure and collect lots of rare stuff to stick in a house that I will never actually live in, purely for the sake of the journey and the end result. As soon as I slip up and break the walls down preventing me from "just having stuff" it crushes that feeling and makes it hard to continue being invested in the game.

Admin mod is incredibly important and it should just be on by default, but some people would benefit from being able to create a universe in which it can't just be turned on or off in a config file and it is legitimately more difficult to cheat than is worth the effort of just recouping your losses and getting over something, or actually working towards a goal. Sandbox games are all about options. They're supposed to appeal to the widest possible audience. This is just another optional feature.

There is actually a patch file in the game that uses the versioning utilities to overwrite the threat level in previously generated moons. When you update to 1.1 it will parse all of your world files and change the threat level in them.

Oh i wasn't aware of that. ^-^ Do you know by chance if it also affect changes on the biome files?
