I believe they also teach about something called a double entendre.

It wasn't a very funny one but, y'know.

Technically speaking, he was referencing Pandora in relation to Steam. Not Starbound.

The topic was on steam for starbound, which therefore includes starbound

Some people just don't like being profiled (personally I don't mind it) and dislike when something gather any kind of information on them, no matter if it is "anonymous" or not. People have had issues with Google Adsense or the Facebook plugin collect data on you to sell to ad space relevant to you. It really is just a personal preference thing, a lot of people like getting ads fine tuned to their interest, others get freaked out by the fact there is a file on a server with there every action on it being sold to advertisers, no matter if there is any way to trace it back to them.

Pandora is a nice service. It does make a good analogy for the benefits of such content tailoring, the only issue I see is that the Music Gnome Project is very up about the fact it keeps a record of what you like and dislike and uses that to tailor while I think Steam (like Google, Facebook, etc) is a little more hush hush about it.

I'm not really sure why you're grouping Steam with the likes of Google or Facebook. Steam doesn't make the majority of its revenue on ads or do things like using "like" buttons on completely different websites to track where you go outside of Facebook/Google.

Ahh I didn't mean to say it was in the same league as them. I really just couldn't think of any other well know services that use you history on them to tailor ads to you.

Sorry about that, Steam is no where near as bad as google or facebook when it come to tracking you since steam only know what you play through steam (well and some other things).

Really did not mean to do that. Really sorry.

Wow. I'm pretty surprised by the landslide vote, I figured more people would have wanted more DRM-free support. But being that Steam is so popular and fair for being "DRM", I can see why. Not all DRM is bad, case in point.

Well, the thing is, we're still guaranteed a DRM free version. The developers have said that Steam will allow them to update the beta faster. Hence, Steam = game out faster. DRM free version can wait until release for all I care, but Stage 2 works well too.

Went for the 3rd option for me....have plenty of good times on steam.....

That being said, #2 would be acceptable alternative option if needed.

That is the way a lot of people feel obviously, I mean I myself love steam and all, but it would suck for the few people who want to beta but have some reason for not being able to use steam to just be out of luck till release. Opening the beta to them when the beta should be able to update at the same speed is a good compromise IMHO.

getting the drm free version later would be more efficient in my mind and would allow the devs to focus on getting everything working instead of making sure they kept both versions updated. Option 3 for me :p

Hey buddy, it'd be great if you looked at the date of the last post next time! This is kind of like not looking at the expiry date on milk and drinking it after it's gone bad.

    Anyhow, closing this thread.
