I never said exclusively, and I don't know what's happening. I never pay very much attention to Starbound's news updates. (I do now..)

You keep saying you have reasons, I have read your thread more than once and you have not adequately explained yourself. You cite zero reasons other than not liking it. Oh and that you "have your reasons". I keep asking you to explain, and you say you have. You have not explained anything. You link to you complaining at an earlier date, cite lawsuits that have nothing to do with your reasoning (of not liking it) and act like nobody gets you. It's good that you aren't aiming to change anybody's mind; you have zero reasons to convince anybody, and can't seem to explain yourself. Believe me, I have made the effort of trying to decipher some tangible and understandable reasoning behind your opinion from the things that you have posted. But there isn't one. You're just going on and on about how you can't possibly compromise your personal stance; while offering no real reasoning behind it. You are a (very) vocal and (very) small and (very) entitled minority on this issue; so I advise that you either bite the bullet, install Steam, play beta OR wait patiently until terms you agree with are presented to you.

Steam sounds like the best and quickest plan for a completed product. I hope you guys do option 3 :D, if you want the privilege of playing it before its finished, you find a way to get steam. Or wait till its done. <3

Thanks for the News Molly! :DD
To give you an answer: I think a mix of two and three might work, IF that works for the team. A couple people have commented on the idea of releasing
Both the Steam Version, and for the DRM-free Version, Updating it Only in stages, i.e. the Progenitor, Automaton, and Bio-Organic Levels of the Beta.
Otherwise, I'll use Steam for the Beta/Completed Version.

Option 3 with absolutely no doubt.

Option 1 will slow the game down for everyone. While non-Steam users will get their weekly updates, in the grand scheme of things, everyone will be many more weeks, or months, behind on the progression of the entire game due to the constant uploading. While I understand the reasoning for those who cannot or will not use steam, signing up for this option might be akin to saying "yes, we all get the game sooner, but we ALL have to wait longer for more content". I'd rather be patient for an extra month now, than wait a few extra months later. I can't support this option at all.

Thanks for keeping us informed! I love that you're all so dedicated to keeping us involved and consulting us about stuff. It really says a lot about the kind of development team you are. Rather than just "consumers"/sources of income, you treat us as active participants in the making of a really awesome, community-oriented game.

The third option seems the most attractive to me, however I'm probably biased since I have Steam.
I think a poll of some sort would be the best way to gauge the community's leanings on this important decision.

Bad example. Most of my console gaming over the last 5 years has been using a standard computer 22" screen.

Regardless, bad generalisation. Maybe it isn't the case for you or your friends, but for a reasonable number, getting a physical product is much easier or preferable to downloading. And most games don't require steam.

Such generalisations could be considered offensive

    Did you read this one?

You don't seem to refer to this one in your post.

I did actually, and then I implied that since a DRM free version would be made available and he could use Steam temporarily, that was also unacceptable. The terms he sited are standard boilerplate DRM. This is almost always the case when what you are paying for is a digital license to a product. Unless he is using Linux, he has already signed off on the same clause for his OS. The terms he has an issue with are commonplace and to be expected for most digital distribution of any kind. He has probably agreed to it with more services than he understands. This was explained to him several times by different users. After his one argument was shot down, he put his fingers in his ears and said he could not compromise his personal code.

Furthermore, he doesn't understand that when he uses a FREE SERVICE (Steam) to download a product that he has paid the developer for he is not SUPPORTING that service. He did not buy the product through Steam. They did not receive a penny of his money. Starbound devs are going through Steam, and they, in turn, will be supporting the service. If he wants to wash his hands of supporting Steam entirely, he should move on to a game that will not be using Steam as their primary delivery service.

If its possible for Chucklefish to employ more people, then I see DRM-free working better as the main team can be working on updates and the other team working on updating the DRM-free version
But im all for option 3, Steam is my first choice when it comes to games :)

If you're looking for input on this still, I quite like the idea of #2 or #3. I am a frequent Steam user, and so would probably not even use the DRM-free version. However, I know many people do not use Steam, and so still updating the DRM-free version is a good idea, as long as things remain stable. Keep up the hard work!

The only reason the person would not tell anything about his/hers reasons if they are illegal or imbarrasing to say. This is open world of games and it it has always been an open world - there is nothing to be ashamed of to say if you don't like it. I can understand people telling that they do not like steam personally, but even such reason always means something like "i don't like to be a part of some money-eating/monstrous system and nobody sees that". Typically such position "i have my reasons and that's it!" means just some huge shortage of personal attention, and this person is trying to attract it with any means.

The only objections are only objections because they don't understand the ease of distribution of Steam compared to any other platform. It's not their fault Valve has made their distribution system way more fluid than all the rest.

I know. I keep getting suckered into acknowledging him.

I certainly am not asserting that he is one of them; but I know that plenty of people who want the beta to be DRM free mean to copy it and hand it out to 20 friends, or worse. I think it sucks that small companies like Chucklefish have to just accept piracy outright and know that there are going to be so many sales they DON'T make because of it no matter what they do to fight it. The awful truth is that fighting it is pointless and the harder they fight it, the more they interrupt the end user experience. Releasing a DRM free version is simply them being good sports about it.

This is why I get so irked when people don't have a specific reason for avoiding Steam like the plague. Or preaching about the "morality" of DRM. I know a good percentage of them would go to great lengths to explain why software piracy is not "stealing", or what the "point of DRM-free" is. Not paying for software is the whole reason so many companies put more effort into anti-piracy than the core software experience itself. It just hurts everyone in the end. If the problem wasn't so rampant, we wouldn't have to all deal with the consequences of it.
