I don't dislike steam,I actually like it but for some reason,My steam isn't working I tried to get to work like reinstalling it but,it has stopped working,I would prefer option 2,due to my computer not working with steam well and me not being able to wait for StarBound But option 3 seems fine
option 2 will be the best but option 3 the fastest and option 1 the fairest but in my opinion option 2 is the best
lets me honest here, if your dont use steam you arnt a pc gamer steam for pc gamers is like, a TV for console gamers sure theres orgin (ew) or disora but those are horably inferior to steam, fact i can see if you want to use drm free for if you swtich computors or put the games on a flashdrive but besides that there is no reason
In my opinion, I believe a combination of 2 and 3 would benefit most more: "Provide a Steam key and DRM-free direct download from the start, but update the DRM-free version after Beta becomes more stable." I feel this would benefit those who cannot wait for the game and want or require a DRM-free version and those who use Steam. It would allow the DRM-free players to play around a bit with the early beta, giving them something to tie them down while they wait for a more stable release. However, I do not know what kind of pull in working this would be for the development team. I am not sure if this option will be easy or even a good idea, but it is just my own idea. On the other-hand, option 3 more applies to me, since I pretty much depend on Steam for most, if not all, of my games.
As pissed as I am about the ps3 thing, what would chucklefish be so concerned about to abuse this option? Piracy? Clearly not, or they'd be going all out with steam. Modding? Unlike the ps3, modding a digital game holds no impact at all, and steam supports modding as well. Even online playability would have no serious problem here, because it would be impossible to stop people from playing online no matter what version of starbound they have. So in application to this very specific game, I would say there really isn't a way to screw over the players with the retroactive contract thing.
Go with number 2, it would give non-steam users something to play while letting you focus on updates and making the game at the same time. Edit: My friend just said: "it would honestly be easier to have it on both and just update both, all they would need to do is run it so it all just updates from a launcher much like smite and minecraft, so it would open throught steam but would update through starbound launcher, so then there wouldnt be a problem"
I think that's part of what this thread is about: obtaining a breakdown of how many players will be using each version, and how many will be using both. I do think that a proper poll somewhere would help greatly in this, just because people who have no problem with Steam are less likely to post in this thread because obviously Steam is a high priority. So that user-base doesn't really have to worry about their opinions being heard. The people who will not be using Steam are worried that if they don't speak up, the DRM-free version will be left by the wayside for now. Some kind of polll attached to Molly's post I think would help the issue. All the users have to do is click what version they will be likely to use. 1. Steam 2. DRM-free 3. a combination of the two / whichever gets updated faster.
I'd say option three seems the most feasible, seeing as you guys want to both work on the game and update quickly.
At the end of it all, T&C and anti-piracy does not deter theft of games, no more than a steering wheel lock deters a car thief. With the right tools and knowledge they will find a way. You only have to look at games with strict DRM and the right website to know that nothing can prevent games from being pirated. It simply slows them down, while at the same time hinders those who do purchase it legitimately with un-needed security. I'm sure anyone who's played minecraft will know that the game can be played with or with out logging into the game. You just need to find the correct download. (I hold a legal copy btw) Ultimately at some point, somewhere, Starbound will be ripped, and illegal downloads will find their way onto the internet. Despite all the best security that can be applied. And only those who have genuine copies will feel the brunt of strict DRM's when/if they for what ever reason fail.
just go the pet store and by a plugless mouse they are furry for easier grip and squeak when they need new batteries as they run on cheese! , but in all seriousness perhaps a computer to any handheld but the 3ds or ps vita would be kinda massivly hard to do ya know? i think a port to the NES would be much easier.
If the question was which option would be the best for the developers, it would be option 3. I think we can throw them a bone so to speak and let them get on with making the game in the easiest way possible. You will still have your DRM free version when it's finished, but CF will not have to struggle to keep all their ducks in a row until then...
I have and use Steam, and I know it's MUCH easier to manage the update process if you use it. So I'll use the Steam client anyway, in all likelihood. DRM is one of those things... I dislike it, but right now it's a fact of life and not something you can completely avoid without being unreasonable. I like the sales on Steam, and the access to games that might not otherwise exist or get the 'push' they need to really sell. I also like Steam's take on modding - the Workshop. Mods are vital. Minecraft would have gone long ago from my household if not for mods. Don't Starve has had some neat features (and characters) added by the community. Farm Simulator has had some amazing mods, although most of them aren't on Steam. But my point stands - modding increases a game's lifetime play value, and Steam makes it VERY easy to do modding updates and manage stuff like that. For those reasons, I come down in favor of Steam. It's kind of like Windows. You don't have to love the corp that owns it, or even love the product. But people do use it, and it does make certain things easier... so it winds up being worth having. -Sevi
er as much as i don't want to argue with a fellow brony/pegasister. i'm afraid the "if you don't use steam you arn't a pc gamer" thing is inaccurate as rainbow dash is fast. steam while it does have a major cashe of games it does not hold them all, and some are not even compatible with steam (will not name under discloser act) while steam is good there are some people who cant use it be it for legitament reasons or otherwise illegal. all in all there are plenty of pc gamers who don't use steam but that don't make them any less of a pc gamer
I personally would vote for 3. For the people who want to play the game more when it is stable and almost polished, let them wait for the DRM-free option of download. For those people, like myself, who want to get the game as soon as it comes out, give out steam keys for those people.
Molly, babe, grow some ballz ! Don't ask, just tell. Your game, your way to do it. At the end, both versions will be avaible anyway. Also #3
go with 3 i will (at least at first) go with drm but i want the game to be the best it can and i think this is the way sorry if i made any spelling mistakes but this is not my mother language
Honestly I will say whatever is easier and more workable for you guys. We don't need to add more strain on the team then there already is and from the sounds of it 3 is the best option.
