Wait if it's DRM free doesn't that mean people can pirate it? I don't really know, but I'd hate to see people steal the game you worked so hard to make.
I respect your knowledge, but you've missed the problem I have with the T&C. I don't have any issues with them changing them. The problem I have is with the T&C applying retroactively to all previous purchases. I don't know about you, but when I buy something, I want to know the conditions of use at the time of purchase. No company should be able to change the conditions of use of something that's already been sold to you. I have an example of what I'm talking about here. The playstation 3 was advertised and sold as being able to run linux, as well as being used for games. A couple of years later, they changed their T&C to disallow linux, and pushed out a firmware update which removed the capability for the console to run linux. You had a choice - you could simply not install the firmware update - but Sony had as part of the change that you wouldn't be able to play games if you didn't use the firmware update. I don't know about you, but that sort of bait-and-switch would seriously irk me. And I won't support any company which specifically enables the possibility for doing it in their T&C. And thanks all to pieces for your eloquent dismissal (one amongst so many in this thread) of my reasoning. Please don't tell me my reasoning is invalid unless you are damned sure that it is, and even then, don't. It's rude, it's condescending, and it's utterly patronising. You may be studying law, but you need to study some social skills.
Considering I am a steam user, option 3 would be best because that means the game can update faster. Why someone wouldn't use steam? Idk.
Ha! But imagine a handheld version way way in the future! It would be interesting... Though the mechanics might be a bit different... An absent mouse, for example.
Wow. Most everyone seems to love option 3! Personally, I'd do Steam for the beta, then look at a DRM-free version for the release. I use Steam, but I prefer non-client games whenever I can get them. The License Agreement is different and all that. Plus, there's the offline gaming option that can get a bit tricky with Steam. But for the beta, option 3 seems like the best overall.
I am going with option 3 for this one guys, Seems Steam is stable enough, and THE platform for this type of endavours. Good luck and hope to be playing your game soon
On the cons, #1: Unlikely to happen, and DRM-free is going to to be hosted by humblebundle till they make a launcher. Point Invalid. #2: They change the ToS All the time, and doesnt really affect you at all unless you are doing something illegal. Point Invalid. #3: Steam has an offline mode, and getting updates needs internet so there is no way around that. Not to mention any online game you have would go under that 25$ a month fee. Point(less) #4: Yea you lose all your games and the money you used to pay for them, but this shouldn't matter because it only affects people breaking the ToS (Illegal stuff) Point Rendered Null. Can we please stop saying stupid things?
I vote for option 3. I personally like Steam a great deal and have had little/no issues with it for the 5 years I've been using it. And, as much as I would like to play this game tomorrow if it was released by then, I'd rather you guys take your time with it and live up to the expectations you have set for your growing fanbase.
as long as i can get into the beta by buying it from steam i dont rilly care, i would choose beta in steam alittle after for drm becouse having them incompatable would be anooying to do MP with some people
Offline mode on steam =_= and humble bundle would probably distribute these updates IF you were online.
Option 3 at all. I tryed to understand why some gamers dislike the today's steam, but i actually failed in understanding it. This People are not stupid, they have their ressons. But guys...steam is a very nice thing for us gamers. Steam workshop alone is worth using it (my civ 5 and portal 2 do well with this almost endless content :>) You know this whole bla bla
Why not create an official poll to see how many people would prefer which option, and base the decision off that?
I don't think that my humble opinion makes any matter after nearly 900 postings, but I think I'd be fine with option 3 for the Beta. Once the game is released I'd prefer to play it without Steam or any DRM.
