I agree. As far as I am concerned the Devs can do whatever they need to do to make developing and updating the beta as efficient as possible. A Beta test is something that should require effort on the players part, not simple mindless complaining. I personally don't care about a DRM Free version, but the 'fire and forget' 'token' would be a great gesture on CF's part if they do decided to go Steam only.
I personally prefer the Steam version. But I think the 2nd option is the best choice there; to take some weights off of your backs and to let all pre-orderers play the beta. It's fair this way.
i'm sorry i'm severely dyslexic my grammar and spelling can be appalling. if never heard of a game release on steam then later re-release DRM free? i'm not sure how they will handle this as all but one game i now that have a drm free release then a steam release require you to convert your account to steam leaving you with the option of DRM free ore steam but not both. oh and yes my vote would be 3. i think steam will be there best option.
All pre-orderers get to participate in the beta with all 3 options. It's cool, also, this is not about the release of the game, it's about the format in which they'll be beta testing. With option 3, the first part of beta testing will take place only on Steam, with the DRM-free beta testing beginning at a later date, when it would not get in the way of update progress. People voting have to remember that this is not either/or Steam vs. DRM-free beta/release. All 3 options would see beta testing in both formats, and that this is not about the release of the game, which will see both versions come out at the same time.
Option 3, please. I think option 3 could work better during all the beta period, and after release, as a stable, polished and (almost) bug free game, option 1 would work well, as long as by that time you guys already got the hang of updating the game on both sides without issues, and by that I mean not delaying updates. Just please, don't ever stop working mostly on the game, we can handle using Steam, but we can't handle bugs and delayed patches. You guys probably know that!
He isn't making a stand. He doesn't even give specific reasoning as to why he is against the platform, all the while saying it would be imposing on his strict moral code to adopt it.
grown that is what i am talking about, beta not full release. i'm sorry if i failed to make that clear .
Hello sir, I'm a law student focusing on case law, and law in the digital age. The reason you see this clause in almost every version of a terms of service is because legally if they don't include a clause saying they can make revisions when they wish, they have to notify each recipient or attendee(person who has agreed to the contract or has utilized the contract) of the changes before implementing them. This is flat out impossible, and if you've signed up for a forum then you've agreed to a similar contract, if you've bought or used windows OS, you've agreed to a similar contract. It is flat out impossible in the modern age to find a ToS without a similar clause, and by similar I mean, things like the LGPL's clause which states, In short I respect your philosophical nature and desire to be free of burdens, but merely by using your computer you have agreed to said similar burdens. And thus your reasoning is invalid, and outmoded. Thank you.
Just so you know - sorry if you've already been answered - the DRM-free and the Steam versions will be just as moddable as each other.
Definitely option three. Steam is where most of the players will be getting it once you hit retail phase anyway.
I never said they didn't. Let me rephrase myself though, your grace: "Everyone will be able to play at the same time = Fair" I'd also like to note that the fate of DRM version being outdated will always be there regardless of whether CF goes with 2 or 3.
I personally have no issue to use Steam. Steam is not DRM by itself if game does not use the feature. In such instance Steam is more like updater (you need an account of some sort and be online to get updates in any case, not Steam specific thing). A game can be launched from installation directory without Steam running. At least some games are that way. Having said that, if Starbund will not work that way... well, some people pre-ordered expecting (based on rewards and so on) to have DRM-free version AND participate in Beta so their concers are understandable to say the least. How do you expect to deal with this?
I believe that the full game, drm-free and steam, are basically the same version and don't seperate players I.e DRM free can play with steam and vice versa. So if you can do something on one, you can do it on the other within the bounds of the game (any extra steam features don't count obivously)
I'd cast my vote to option 3 . Though, I was wondering if I use the steam activated beta, will that activate the full copy to my steam? As I intend to keep the DRM-free copy and give the steam copy to my friend. EDIT: I realize the alt copies aren't to be handed out.
