The difference about pirating a game/piece of software that is out, and leaking a game in a closed beta stage with very few testers, is that its easier to find the culprit. Trust me, if someone leaked, they would know who. I highly doubt that will happen though, because we have some great, trustworthy members in this community who would make great beta testers, without having to bring someone the developers are on the table about, in.

  2. Well, I still think its good that they are taking precautions - there are people who can pretend at being good until the last moments.
Plus not having the betatesters swear silence and instead control what they are allowed to test will make things a lot easier to manage. You can't control gossip and what people say to their friends.

I agree with NaturallyMade that there are many trust worthy people on the forums. But I also agree with Ymedron and the fact is people who get beta can tell friends and will tell friends which leads to friends wanting to play the send it to them via email it gets leaked by the friend or the tester themselves.

For a start, a closed beta is meant for testing, so I doubt they'll give it to people like PaperBatVG just to make videos of it, but, then again, that's just my opinion.

And of course, you'll get people wanting to share it with their friends, but I firmly believe that if the developers choose the right people, no funny business will occur, that, or whip out the NDAs.

I agree with you I think the beta testers if are the right people won' t leak it also when terraria was leaked didn't that cause a whole fiasco or something I defiantly dont want that to happen to starbound

Yeah, ugh, the devs leaked terraria it's self, they posted the game somewhere ages before it became famous, if you're speaking for the really old leak.

Thank you for this. I only had the Wikipedia entry to go on with respect to a potential release date.
We are all eager to give this game a whirl. I love the premise and can only hope that it will live up to my own expectations.
Better to release when ready, I always say. ;)

I think that they would have some sort of very small differences with each client they give to the chosen testers. So they definitely WILL know if it gets leaked, and who leaked it. Leaking it would definitely not be worth the lawsuit for whoever would try such a thing. I know authors of books do that when they give out copies of their book to proofread.

hey what if thy made it to you have to download it to the computer from the web site and once that happens it sort of locks to where you can't copy it or edit it in any way, and you would have to have a pass

    People could hack it.

yes but with culture today only a few people would get off their butts to do that but your right that is a possibility. maybe they could put it on the web site and you have to go there to test it. and of course there pass codes and stuff like that

  15. As long as they have some kind of a method planned out rather than hoping for the best and being at the mercy of the betatesters. :V!

Betas betas betas *le shrug*. Betas are neat and all but not entirely necessary. If the devs need one they could pick from their moderators. Then a few more of the more active members who seem to always show curteous and civil behavior throughout the forums.

Dont pick the best testers, only pick the ones you believe you can trust if security is what you are worried about.

If you WANT a bunch of people to beta, i think using Steam to be a distribution platform would work. Natural Selection 2 did this. Though they did it with those who preordered it from their site rather than from a hand picking. The DRM is an added level of protection that if you DO get a bad apple, its going to take just that much more time to get it around. Granted, I think it only worked for Natural Selection 2 because everyone who preordered it got into beta. And i have to say, that was a real beta. xD

Thanks for the info NaturallyMade :)
I'd love to be in this beta if there is one. But it will most likely be just the moderators that are picked to play :/
