Regarding Pixels as crafting material...

Just why? It doesn't make any sense. If you collected the materials to craft something, why should you need to pay for it? Not only you have to look for the materials, but you also need to grind for money. That, coupled with the fact you can't store pixels and you lose a percentage of it on death makes it really boring to craft some stuff.

Also, why do I have to pay my own 3D printer to scan objects?

I think Pixels should be used only as currency and as crafting material for the 3D printer. Some way to store them would be nice too, even I have to, I dunno, craft a Pixel bar out of 1000 pixels.

Pixels hardly become an issue once you've refineries to turn your hard earned ores into pixels.
Even better, leave the pixels in the refineries until you really do need them.

Yup. Ever since I made the refinery, it's been so easy to get pixels. I just toss all the extra ore I don't need in there. Did not think about using it to store pixels, so thanks for that tip mate.

That still doesn't answer why I need to pay to craft my own weapon.

The miniature penguins that operate the printer need payment to strip down the item to make a blueprint.
Likewise for crafting items, not all the pixels are used as material.

I find it odd to craft items with pixels outside of the 3D printer. Am I paying the anvil to create the weapon, or am I using the pixels to glue it together? :S

It's a game mechanic. It doesn't have to make sense. Why does Mario get coins by head butting blocks?

It's a currency that's used in the game, and once you progress beyond the very very early stages, it becomes no issue at all - which is a bigger problem than it being there in the early stages, in my opinion.

I'm going to go with using pixels to glue it together. *nod.*

Well, pixels aren't called Gold or USD. How is ANYONE supposed to know what pixels are really supposed to be?

Has anyone stated that pixels are a form of currency?

Sure it can be used to buy items, but pixels really could be anything.

Uh - so other than using them to pay for something, how else would you define currency? Especially in the parameters of a game.

i can answer this one with game lore mario gets coins from smashig blocks because those blocks are actually residents of the mushroom kingdom that have been magically transformed into blocks so you can consider it a form of murder and robbery

yup and if you remember in the original you also got points for smashing blocks kinda like GTA the platformer

This is true, but what actually are pixels. Vikings used to use hacksilver, they'd have bracelets and they'd cut bits off by weight to pay for stuff. What if pixels are nanobots or something else like that? We can craft a lot of stuff so perhaps the fine details are handled by the bots. They're used as currency because they have practically infinite uses and don't degrade. I dunno why they'd be on wild animals but the same goes for other currency. Perhaps it's just some extremely useful material that fills a variety of roles. It could be present in living creatures or something.

Pixels are material for 3D printers, that became an intergalactic currency due to usefulness.

Also, very delicious which is why you find them from animals.

But it's flawed as a game mechanic too. The whole point of a crafting system is not needing to buy your equipment, and they make you pay for it? Besides, if this system stays there, what will happen on later sectors, like 7 or 8? Having to think twice about going after materials for a new weapon because dying means you won't have the fifteen thousand pixels you need to craft said weapon is terrible design.

They don't explain it, but the easy explanation is that you're using a combination of traditional techniques and your Matter Manipulator. Matter conversion requires pixels, that's why you lose pixels when you die and have to be reconstructed. You're burning a few pixels to use your MM as a welder, heater, saw, et cetera. Or did you think you were planing wood planks with your teeth? Cutting stone with your fingernails?

So yeah, TLDR Pixels are glue.

As everything in the world are pixels, I thought it made perfect sense that if you wanted to make anything, that the building blocks of the world were needed. I think of pixels more like 'matter/carbon', which is also used as currency. That's my take on them at least, more matter than currency - well both really.

I thought of it like the replicator credits in Voyager. lol

Basically, condensed energy/matter matrix of some sort.
