Reg the "Reduced Character wipes"

So with today's post, i am well aware its beta and expect character wipes - yada yada -
They mentioned hopefully one last character wipe and no more. Is THAT statement only for beta? Now weather this is true or not. Has it been discussed or determined that when the time come for version 1.0 will there still be a full wipe regardless (i.e. No beta characters allowed into V1.0) ?

 

it makes me sad they want to stop character wipes because some of the community are crying about them. i want character wipes often, it means theres more content and mechanics that needs a fresh testing. no character wipes means we basically have the foundation of the game. and this game feels far from finished. the game needs to be a very far place from it is now before an official release. no one should want their current characters near release, because they should feel medievil in a modern environment. it was stated from day one "character wipes will happen" but a few weeks into release devs have bowed down to people crying about BETA TESTING the game for them.

 

Ideally, the wipes should finish by the end of the 1st phase of beta.

 

Well considering I've already made 5 characters, of which at least 3 have beaten all the bosses, I don't really mind anymore.

I'd like the final release to be a fresh slate.

Even if it isn't, I'll probably be starting another character.

 

Wait...what? Wipes are an integral part of Alpha/Beta testing. It's generally bad to not wipe things, especially when you're making huge changes along with new content.

 

I'd prefer a final wipe once everything's ready to go, that way it's all clean and new and out of that testing stage.

 

You can still have tons of material added without having characters wiped. I would think wiping a character would only be needed when major changed occur which would include character data itself. I for one am excited for when the game is completely finished and we get that final wipe. The final pioneer setting out into the complete world, should be amazing.

 

The point of that feature is to allow them to make significant changes to the game after launch, at which point wipes are not acceptable.

It really is a good thing and it's something that they need to get in early so that we can test it thoroughly just like every other major system.

 

You can't exactly properly test NEW content on an old character if they are already PAST the point that you need to gather said materials for said content though.

 

The only time a wipe should occur is when something integral to generation occurs.

Characters whenever the basic character statistics or such are changed.
Planets whenever the ore/animal (or something similar) generation are changed - These may not be mandatory even if otherwise is mentioned. You just won't see the new changes on your existing worlds, or it will frack them up.

 

True but then people would just need to make a second character to test the earlier content. I know there are tons of people playing this as fun and aren't really into testing anything but the thousands of others who are testing make up for it.

 

Exactly which often leads to the starting game and as a result new players getting neglected and "I have a million Pixels and enough ore to make a Dyson sphere, so you just need to play better" type responses to people who do have complaints. something that is already happening.

 

If it matters, I am perfectly prepared for character wipes. They set proper expectations from the start, plus added a message to the launch screen.

If they really can continue to work on the game without character wipes, okay. I just hope it doesn't hold them back or hinder them in anyway. If it's truly needed, I say do it.

 

Another thing they said is that the racial traits (not that i actually realized there was any to begin with lol) is moving as an armor trait (i.e. avains will glide with that armor). is this still only applicable to the race? otherwise kinda makes it redundant what race you choose to play with if any jo blow and grab that armor type for that trait

 

This has been known for awhile and that's kind of the point of making it work that way. People can choose to look the way they want and still have the racial armor bonuses they want as well rather than someone who prefers Avians having to be a smelly ape man for jump/movement boosts and so on.

 

Wipes are fine when it's actually required because of large changes but are otherwise pointless.

Wipes are an accepted part of beta.
You still have the option to wait until the official release if you can't handle the wipes.
In the meantime, take the opportunity to use wipes to try new races and build new types of bases or try new strategies,
and reply on how you think the balance changes work.
Unfortunately, Beta is a test phase and wipes will be needed to refresh content.
Of course, you don't "Have" to wipe most of the time, but it's recommended.

 

It takes mere hours to get to impervium after making at least 3 characters. Get better, don't cry over wipes. Wipes are fine for a beta.

 

Hopefully the decision to reduce the amount of wipes was reached wholly internally as they feel they have the character save data nailed down in its final form and not as the result of whiners on the forums. I also hope that it includes making the file names for the player saves plain text because having to open up a file to scan for the name every time I want to do something is a bit of a pain.
