It never really occured to me, mostly because in the screenshots my attention was focused elsewhere, and though i'm sure i'm not the first to notice, take a look at the inventory in this screenshot.

A bob-omb? a gameboy? while the bob-omb is pretty self expanatory, i wonder what purpose having a gameboy would serve.
Considering the fact that this screenshot was posted some time ago, i wonder if these items will still be there in the final game, and what other references there may be.

These kinds of games tend to be loaded with references of that sort, although some are probably unintentional. Example being the blaster in the left hand. That could easily be the blaster from commander keen or spaceman spiff's blaster, although it was probably intended as neither. I gotta admit though that the gameboy is hard to accidentally make.

Well it really looks like a "generic" blaster, but if you were to compare it to something, it doesn't look like the one from Commander Keen [IMG] (avid fan... sort of looks like the Raygun from there[IMG] but certainly not the HyperPistol[IMG]) and looks to me like the one from Earthworm Jim:

Anywho, the Gameboy is probably some really complex piece of technology like a hypersonic-amazing-imminent-death-detector.
Or maybe a Gameboy. Or maybe a placeholder.

lol now that you mentioned it, i see something else (which was mentioned earlier in the thread). It is the blaster, it kinda looks like the blaster from Earthworm Jim.
EDIT: But yeah. As mentioned above me, games like this tend to completely filled with references and Easter eggs like that.

Personally, i'm pretty curious as to what function the gameboy could serve.

I'd like to know, as well. Then again, when I remember my old school gameboy, I recall all of the adapters and accessories for that thing. What if your Starbound 'gameboy' was a customize-able exploration tool that acts like a tricorder of sorts? :3

A vague reference i found while browsing the info on the game was the use of a dropship like in Mass Effect 2 & 3

.............................. dropships have been around since halo if not before...

    Yeah, that's not a reference.

That's like saying Starbound is referencing Call of Duty because it has guns.

Any possible references you may see in screenshots right now like sprites could easily be placeholders. The Gameboy could be a placeholder sprite for something they haven't decided on what it's going to look like yet.
