Ravaging your planet for resources

I'd imagine however that the natives would get angry at you for mining and polluting their planet and may even attempt to attack your mining operations. Which would make for an interesting scenario.

this is an awful:poo: idea but atlest make it a toggle for ppl who want to destry there world by mining 1 large deposit of x ore i do think that if it was implemented alt lest make it balenced so the whole world dies only a part of it mabey a potion or somthing to un pollute it

I think that it should be a rather simple thing to overcome, just by being not-incompetent:
Scale low: By keeping one's mining and refining rate to a minimum, the ecosystem will recover faster than you're damaging it, since you start with a small scale (I'm anticipating you're going to need freakin' ginormous mining robots to damage an entire planet, and really massive mining robots to damage a region) You don't have to worry about the ecosystem falling apart.
Mine efficiently: By making sure that you place your mining robots well, perhaps designing them as tunnelers rather than strip-miners, and making sure that you have reasonably efficient refineries on them, you should be able to prevent ecological damage by, again, not damaging it at all.
Active mitigation: If you REALLY need LOTS of resources RIGHT NOW, and you have plenty of energy, then you can install the same scrubbers that would clean up the ecosystem as you damage it, at the cost of base reactor energy. With this method you could mine pretty much as fast as you have energy for. And if you still damage the environment, then your recovery machines are already set up and working.
Ship Offworld: If you have a moon or something where you can refine ores where the ecosystem is already at 0, (nonexistant) then you can simply build your refineries there and send off all your ores for refinement, because I'm thinking that refining would cause the vast majority of the ecological damage to the world, while because you might not have many options for mining, it does less damage (unless done improperly, which would be pretty obvious you're doing it WRONG, as your mining macines go plowing through the forest, what did you expect?)

I don't think that the % of ores mined should relate at all to the health of the planet, it should be how you mine and refine the ores that makes the difference as to how the planet reacts. Regional damage should pose as warning signs to clean up your act, because it will bleed into other sectors of the planet, (Which depending on the amount of damage could either help it recover or damage the nearby sectors.)

Actually, busy roads can cause ecological damage by restricting the ability for animals to migrate. Imagine that you're a deer that needs to migrate to a location that's blocked by a busy highway. There's a very high chance that you could end up as roadkill.

Also, building tunnels would weaken the structural integrity of the ground above, since there isn't as much to hold it all up as before. If there are large burrowing creatures on the planet that's being drilled apart, then there's a greater chance of cave-ins, which could affect the burrowing creatures as well as the miners.

Of course, if you're careful, you could reduce the impact on the environment, though it may cost you more resources to set up the infrastructure (such as suspending highways on a bridge, or filling up tunnels once the area is depleted of resources).

Hooray for fragmentation! Hover vehicles (10 foot hover minimum) would help in this department. It's the future right?

I like the sound of this, especially because like azarga said, it will take a VERY LONG TIME for anything significant to happen and Starbound will have billions of planets AFAIK (if you don't want your lovely world to burn, just find another one to steal from :3)

OMG I would be so happy if pollution was added! Over time planets would be polluted because of overpopulation, industry, and deforestation! Though I do hope that you can populate a planet/home world. Reproduction and pollution better be added!

Oh yes, I think I'd quite like to see this. For those times when I feel like being a big, miserly, planet-mining tycoon, it'd be great to gaze upon the fruits of my labor. My destructive, destructive labor. :proper:

Come to think of it, wouldn't this somewhat fall under the idea of terraforming? Not as drastic as completely turning a planet into a lava-world or some such, but still affecting the environment in some way. It'd be very, very interesting...

While all of you guys are thinking of fumes created by the burning of fuels to refine or smelt said ore, when I first read this thread I was actually thinking of the reduction of soil mineral levels.

I mean, surely the removal of highly concentrated bodies of minerals would greatly reduce the mineral levels in the soil?

And of course, plants need soil minerals, herbivores need plants, and carnivores need herbivores. And thus, the ecosystem is destroyed via mining even without massive smelting industries.

Either way, this is a nice idea and I'd like to see it, or at least something similar, in the game.

I personally really like the concept of the idea, but the way it is put across seems to be at some debate... I'll stay out of that side of things, but just say that I personally quite like the idea, would make you think about what you're doing rather than just going gung-ho and strip mining easy difficulty planets. Toggle seems pretty much compulsory with this on another note though.

Good concept though, I like it :)

I like the idea of degrading the environmental level through exhausting its resources. Like Flotilla showed I think a big part of players will relocate production facilities into desert planets and just transfer resources to their homeplanets.

I like this idea especially since i want to be able to explore the world and gather samples of the biological life so i can regrow them else where, and then put the planet to use and by that i mean take every little thing out of it

Indeed, i think it'll be good to let players screw up planetary ecosystems :D

I like this. Probably won't be there for game release, but something that should be added none the less. The process should be super gradual though. I especially like the idea of the increased roughness of monsters in 'depleted areas.'

You can vote for this suggestion using the following links. To verify that this is the correct data-id you'll have to filter by Planets and Environments, page to around page 4 (now back on page 30, due to down votes), and inspect element. Or you can take my word. Hopefully they will add a button in the forums or some sort of linkage, currently this is the easiest way to vote for the suggestion without having to dig through pages of suggestions.

Thank you very much for the links. They really have to introduce linking from/to threads/voting or at least a search option.
