I have played terraria, and I know what an absolute pain it is to get around without at least a grappling hook. When you finally get to make one it quickly becomes your goto means of travel. It can save you from long falls, opens up some areas that were previously closed off to you, and is just plain fun to use. I feel the grappling hook was a great addition to the game, and also helped minimize one of Terraria's biggest weaknesses: Poor movement controls coupled with hard to traverse terrain. My idea is a simpler piece of tech than the grappling hook, rappeling equipment! Basically it fills the role of a grappling hook before you can get one. It won't let you zip to walls or pull you to ceilings, but it could be an interesting way to descend dangerous cliffs or mining tunnels. And since you get it early on, you can much more safely mine the materials you need to get up and running. Anyways I saw this filling the same role as any grappling hook, but I really liked the idea of a more tiered set of items and technology. With 100 levels of planets, the gear will obviously have many stages of progression and get better and better the higher up you go. This is where tiered technology comes into play. Instead of just giving you a grappling hook to solve all your problems in one go, why not incorporate interesting changes in gameplay with your character progression? You can give new players more mundane methods to tackle problems until they reach a new tier of technology and are rewarded with more capable items that open up even more interesting gameplay possibilities. Basically all I'm saying is, take the grappling hook, split its functionality into tiers, then add a piece of functionality back in for every tier achieved in the form of an improved or better kind of tool. I think this would be a good idea for many types of items, especially mobility items and tools. Let me know what you think
Yeah, I like the idea. It could definitively work in the 2-D environment too, but its a bit hard to imagine.
I like this idea. I always did think Terraria would be better if it had rappeling (even though there were never gigantic cliffsides).
I always felt that it would be better if it had rappelling, especially when I fell down the corruption chasms. Those really frustrated me, because I always played on large worlds, and I had to walk all the way back after I died.
Wow that would be cool If they're would be huge holes in starbound it could be nice to go investigate in them for treasures whitout dying multiple times.
It's an excellent idea. But I'm curious about one thing -- how would the rappeling technology progress? Would it have longer length, or faster lowering time?
Perhaps it could also be used on types of terrain it wouldn't have been able to grapple on to before. Ex: Copper Rappel = Every block up to Stone, Gold Rappel = Every block up to Ebonstone
That'd be nice as well, but hopefully it can be coupled with more... outlandish/interesting upgrades, like a temporary rocket thrust or something. Anything to break the boredom of just Copper +3 > Iron +5 > Titanium-alloy +7.
For minimal upgrades before you get an entirely new piece of tech (like the grappling hook) you could get doubled rope length, and maybe a gun that fires the planting hook. Also the ropes you make could be limited in your inventory but permanent when you use them, so they are still useful even after you get a reusable grappling hook. For the grappling hook, id think a robotic spider that clings to walls in place of your hook and allows you to control its movement could be cool. Maybe make it slower, but it would allow you to postion yourself easier
Ooh... perhaps you could use higher tier grappling hooks to possibly bring you towards enemies or vice versa?
GET OVER HERE! I would get endless hours of entertainment from something like this. Especially if it slightly hiked enemies into the air (With upgraded versions.) Or me being the cruel person that I am, ripping flying enemies out of the air. But back on subject. A rappel would be a nice addition, it would help for traversing deep terrain in early game, and with the before mentioned ability, would be a lot of fun for late game.
I'm gonna get a mod (When there are some) to become Batman, and every time I use the rappeling in my head will be: Nananananana.... BATMAN!. The Batman part when you get on the ground.
I seriously always hated the fact that in Terraria, you couldn't use the Harpoon to spear people (and screaming, bloody monsters) that I assume to be of peasant level, and then drag them into a death machine. Okay, maybe my imagination isn't THAT vivid (hope I'm right!), but it honestly seemed that it wouldn't have been to hard to do something like that. I mean, the WoF was able to ninja grab you through walls. With a a fleshy appendage. Can't be done with a metal chain and hook. Seems legit.
I like the idea beats dieing in chasms But would there be mounted rappelling lines or a item that lets you repel down & gets put back in the bag as if it is the first one I cold make use of the rope to get back up the second well getting out isn't going to be easy...
I imagined the ropes staying wherever you place them. And hopefully having some physics so leaping to ropes and swinging to ledges can happen
I like this the idea can work w/ the only thing being is it too late to add these kind of things...(If so & it's not there there are always mods though so....)
It seems to me that a clear transport hierarchy exists, that makes sense mechanically, and gameplay-wise. 1: Rope: Good for climbing down heights too great for you to safely fall down, or provide a way back up if there's a one-way system in place. You can't throw it, hook it or attach it to anything else, except the ground that you're standing on. 2A: Parachute: With some simply made canvas, the nigh-on useless rope is turned into a quick deployed parachute, allowing you to fall unprecedented distances without worries.. 2: Grappling hook: With a basic bit of metal sheathing on the end, you make a hook that you can throw. You can grasp the rope to swing, but it's essentially too short to bridge any horizontal gap that you couldn't have jumped anyway., in theory, you could catch flying things with it, but good luck. 3A: Hang glider: Some safety harnesses, better aerodynamic shape and bam, your new hang glider is ready for her maiden voyage. You may not be flying, but you're faling with style! Rather than being a tool for gonig down, this handy hang glider is a tool for going along. Skip the mobs, the loot, the fascinating surface structures. Who cares about those old things when you're flying like a bird (Avians, no offence). 3: Grappling hook gun: By adding your basic grappling hook to a simple launcher, as found in industrial machines and weapons, you provide it with a much greater range, and increase it's utility ten-fold. The longer reach and launcher mechanism makes it suitable as a zipline, impromptu weapon and as a quicker escape tool. 4A: Powered Paraglider: With a bit of tweaking, a basic motor can be improvised for the hang glider. With additional harnesses, safety measures and easy-use sitting arangement, this ultra small motor can be used to actually FLY! No longer confined to the whimsy of the wind and gravity, you can flip nature the bird (Avians, no offence) with your high-efficiency powered paraglider! 4:Jetpack: Who wants a jetpack? Ha ha ha, i'm kidding. Everyone wants a jetpack. Using the fundamental concepts behind the grappling hook gun, you can modify it to project something much better than simple rope, oh yes. Although it requires two such devices to create one fully-capable jetpack, this high-efficiency-but-not-as-efficient-as-a-powered-hangglider design can take you anywhere, up or down, left or right. The confines of caves are your bitch (Avians, no offence) and nothing stands in your way!* While not as fast, or as long-lasting as the powered hang gliding, this is the perfect tool for all manner of spelunking, prospecting and desecration of sacred but poorly-defended religious sites! *Except solid objects, mobs and othe people shooting at you.
