Seeing how well development on Starbound is going, i couldn't help but wonder why random generation seems from what I've seen to be only for planets, monsters, and environments with little focus on plants at all.

Also there is the matter of fruit and vegetables, I've noticed that there only seems to be a couple of preset fruits such as bananas, apples and the avesmingo which all grow on different planets but restrict the variety of food we can actually find.
That's why I've decided that Starbound should randomly generate its fruit as to keep things a surprise, mix that with various status effects from eating strange alien fruit (Eg. SparkleBerry: Causes health loss but grants extra speed for 5 seconds.) and I think it would equal a perfect addition to the infinite gameplay Starbound offers.
EDIT: Existing fruits would still be there but rarer, although shops would stock seeds for preset plants.

TLDR Randomly generated fruit and vegetables with different effects.
Post some ideas for effects here and please leave feedback.

Sounds good, but I'm wondering how well the cooking recipes will work if one say, required bananas, and you'd have to go hunting from planet to planet looking for bananas.

But what would you do with randomly made fruits, other than eat them? They couldn't really have recipes, unless it was based on type.

also, scientifically speaking, if space travel is so widely available/used, then it is perfectly plausible that the seed of a plant got stuck on the explorer, he went back to his ship, then explored other places, unwittingly spreading the plant's species galactically.

However, also scientifically speaking, the planet would have to have the same chemicals, in near enough amounts to the plant's home planet, to at least not kill it before it can adapt/reproduce.

basically, what i'm getting at, is it is possible to find the (insert plant name here) on a different planet to the one you originally found it on.

Well that would be an excellent explanation for how you would find premade plants on planets. Also, the chemicals/Soil Ph would probably kill a lot of introduced plants but I'd imagine there would be plenty of species that would thrive in the new environments, invasive bananas anyone?

Maybe make a couple of recipes that can use any kind of food, like fruit salad and toffee (Insert name of fruit here).
