One thing: most of the races don't have disadvantages.

Personally, I think that the existing suggestions have way too many traits. If you add differences to the different races, they should be simple, interesting and easy to remember. I guess I'll try to think of my own.
    Human:
    Sell prices are slightly higher
Buy prices are slightly lower (honestly I have no idea what to add to the humans, we're pretty boring unless you think REALLY hard about it)

    Novakid:
Resistant to all elements (gas people, they probably produce half of these effects themselves)
When hit, they get a poison-like effects unless healed. (the gas leaking out)

    Apex:
Banana weapons add regen when fully fed (like that idea)
Higher hunger rate (both a developed brain and a developed body requires more sustenance, not sure what intereesting debuff to use)

    Avian:
Higher mobility (jump higher, run faster, swim faster, etc. Probably boring, but it fits)
Higher damage from falling (because bird bones are hollow from what I know, they'd break much more easily)

    Floran:
When in the sun, hunger stops decreasing, but doesn't get any higher (photosynthesis, I doubt that it'd be enough for a highly-active species)
Fire stops quicker, but decreases hunger as well as health (because from what I know, plants have more water in them)

    Hylotl:
Twice the breathing capacity underwater. (fish)
Require more food. (they require more liquid, but I don't think it's possible to separate food into nutrients and liquid types)

    Glitch:
Fire doesn't hurt but adds a slowness debuff (unless lava, then it hurts as long as they're touching it)
Can't swim, only drown (because heavy)

Wait you were talking about armor? I thought you wanted them to have that by default

The glitch one would basically lock them out of underwater cities you realize that?

I've been lurking and this thread caught my eye. In my opinion racial traits should be minor, nice little buffs but not game-defining things like total immunity to a certain environment or whatnot. We should also determine whether these traits would only refer to the character's race as in biology, or should also reflect their culture (like avian's fanatism with Kluex, or Floran's stabbing habits), since we (the player) have technically detached from them to become Protectors. But alas, here's what I could think of:

    Human
Humans are boring and uninteresting. However they seem to be the diplomats of the game so I'll go with that, it's also been suggested in this thread before.
-Buying for 15% less, selling for 15% more.
-Higher chance for merchants to have rarer items.
-Surrendering Outlaws always offer to join your crew (never try to attack you when you lower weapons).
-Increased chance for Tenants and Villagers to offer to join you upon completing their quests. (This may or may not be a good thing)

    Avian
I'm troubled by Avians, because I'm not quite sure how to translate the fact that they're humanoid birds with strong faith into the game without "crossing the line", so to speak. They supposedly also get trained as warriors since their early youths.
-Allied combat NPCs will only use ranged weapons if you're wielding melee, and will switch to melee if you're wielding ranged weapons, unless the enemy is too close/far respectively. (army combat tactics of sorts)
-Can craft a special Adaptable Staff out of Avolite (using various Avian Crystal objects) which can cycle between the various staff Area of Effect buffs (no primary attack). (Avian merchants rarely sell these)
-Gain Swift while under the effects of Light (low grav).
(I know, I'm really lost when it comes to Avians)

    Apex
Close to humans, but smarter with more bestial bodies. They probably have more drugs than blood running through their veins. Most live under a strong dictatorship.
-Foods that include bananas have their buff durations doubled.
-Cost of building crafting stations and upgrading them halved.
-Can craft a special upgrade for every kind of EPP that adds a tesla coil which periodically zaps nearby hostiles (Base damage 10, increased by your armor's damage bonus, zaps at 2-second intervals). (Apex merchants rarely sell these)
-Melee weapons break enemy shields faster.

    Floran
Savage sentient plant people, strong attraction to pointy objects. Carnivorous, good hunters, scavengers.
-Raw meats do not cause food poisoning.
-Hunger drops half as fast during day hours.
-Craft throwable hunting weapons in bundles of 20 (instead of 5). All hunting spears have a fixed cooldown of 1 second. (if only the higher tiers' recipes were re-added to the game.. right?)
-"Hunting" humanoids makes them have a high chance of dropping their equipped weapon/part(s) of their armor.
    -Gain Rage while hungry.

    Glitch
Robots. Medieval robots. They do and feel like organic sentient races though.
-Full Belly also grants Swift and Jump boost.
-Fully tensed bows always fire the powered arrow version.
-Enemy melee hits against you shock the enemy for half of the damage they dealt to you as Electric damage, with a small chance of briefly stunning them.
-Can craft a special Spiked Shield (one for each tier) which returns blocked melee damage back to the enemy, returning double the amount if perfect blocking. (Glitch merchants rarely sell these)

    Hylotl
Rapid-evolving amphibious poets. Their biggest traits seem to be ther amphibiousness and their constant pursue of knowledge. It's also mention they're well trained warriors.
-Lung capacity doubled, increased swim speed and increased underwater vision.
-Knows all crafting recipes since the start.
-Gain Rage (20s), restore all your energy, and heal 20% of your max HP when a nearby friendly unit dies.
    -Wet doesn't slow you down.
-Vegetarian foods and Fish-based foods have their buff durations doubled.

    Novakid
Sentient Wild West neon gas people. Natural gunslingers, generally careless around other races. There's not a lot about them, really.
    -Glow in the dark.
    -Energy recharges twice as fast.
-Weapon elemental effects always occur. (Burning, freezing, etc)
-Tenants and villagers are less likely to offer to join your crew. (This may or may not be a good thing)
(Not very sure of how to approach these either)

Here's another one, this time even less boring stats:
    Apex:

    Genetically Engineered:
Stimpack effects last 20 seconds more
Poison and Well Fed status effects don't last as long
    Hunger drains faster
Dash tech cool down reduced by 0.1 seconds: now 0.7 from 0.8
    Distortion Sphere speed increased
    Primal Bodies:
Can climb vine blocks, trees, and plant fiber vines like rope in terraria. You can jump off, and when you do it works like a wall jump.
Gain a rage buff when below: 20% health
Bananas give an additional short regeneration buff along with well fed for a few seconds.
Increased Jump height by 15% when above 50% health. When below 50%, that bonus increases to 25%.

    Avian:

    Birdlike Orgin:
    Take 33% more knockback
    Jump Height increased by 30%
    Fall Slower
    Take 50% less fall damage
Can eat seeds, and gives a slight Regen buff additionally.
    Cannot eat cooked food.
    Religious Race:
Rage Buff when around avian decorations and artifacts.
Can pray to Kluex at any time. This has a random result, usually positive, sometimes negative.
It has many results, such as a regeneration buff or any other Tanauc buff. It chan also give negative buffs.
Can fly with a rocket boot effect when stargazer acolyte wings are equipped in the main back spot.
Other stargazer wings will increase the effect. This does decrease energy.
Staves and Wands use half the energy of normal
    Over-raged:
Rage status effect additionally gives a slight speed boost but decreases defense.

    Human:

    Founders of the protectorate:
Increased chance that it will only take one quest to obtain a crew member.
Small chance to spare hostile npcs, causing them to beam up but drop five times the pixels.
Hostile Npcs will think twice about fighting you, and there is a small chance they will run away.
Shop Prices are lower, but sell prices are also lower( because they want to tell their friends that a protectorate member just sold them something)
    Protectorate Army Members:
    Decreased damage to village guards
Defense and Speed increase when holding a ranged weapon
Increased Energy, although slower energy regeneration
    Space Pioneers:
Fuel is 25% more effective as a base bonus
200 less fuel in the fuel tank

    Glitch

    Metalmen:
    5 base armor
Standing in oil regenerates you and restores hunger
Cannot use normal healing items: Tiered bars instead for healing:
Iron bars give Regen equivalent to salve when consumed
Tungsten Bars give Regen equivelent to bandages when consumed
Titanium bars give Regen equivelent to medkits when consumed
Durasteel bars give Regen equivelent to Nanowraps when consumed
Cannot consume normal foods, instead must eat metal foods
Hunger works different: It depletes slower, and does not slow you down. When hungry, however, energy Regen is completely cut off until the effect is gone. Once you are starving, you have 30 seconds before you die instantly. During this time you do 25% less damage and have -5 less armor.
    Take only 10% of knockback
    +20% more health
    Immune to Poison
    Immune to Drowning and Breathing
    Take double electric damage
You are Faster and Stronger when at full health
    -30% to incoming bullet damage
Less agile when submerged in water.
    Fall faster
    Servant Preperation
Smelting has a chance to give two bars instead of one
Chance to get double to crops when you harvest crops
Chance to only consume one ore when smelting
    Medieval Culture
Bows charged the full way back always fire a charged arrow
Shields have a faster recharge time

    Floran:

    Plant People:

Regenerate health and hunger when exposed to sunlight
Take triple fire damage when under 33% hunger
Fire lasts 5 times as long when under 33% hunger
Hunger depletes faster in hot biomes, and also deserts
Wet also gives you fire immunity
Energy Regen boost at full hunger
    Carnivorous Murderers:
Rage buff when you are hungry
    Immune to food poisoning
Eating Raw food gives you well fed plus a short Regen buff
Eating non-meat only gives half the hunger back
Having Floran backwear on your back increases damage
    Skilled Hunters
Every weapon counts as a hunting weapon

    Hylotl:

    Amphibious People:
    When wet, gain:
    +3 defense
    Regen buff
    10% more damage
    *Also applies when in water
    Swim boost
    Walk faster underwater
Fire lasts only one-third as long as normal
Going too long without being exposed to water causes hunger to deplete twice as fast
    Peaceful Warriors:
Killing a hostile Npc has a chance to spare it, making it beam up but drop five times the pixels
30% less damage to hostile npcs
When using the same Melee weapon as your enemy, there is a chance that you will block their attack.
Dying causes any allied player to gain a speed buff as long as they are near you when you died
An Allied Hylotl player dying near you will give you a rage buff

    Persuers and Protectors of Knowledge
Getting a new codex unlocks a random crafting recipe
Rage buff when around anything with the colony tag "knowledge"

    Novakid:
    Star People
Explode in a fiery explosion on death
    Immune to Poison
    Immune to Radiation
    Immune to Fire
    Immune to Melting
    Immune to Heat
Electricity increases damage by 25% instead of doing damage
Energy Regen is twice as fast
Max Energy is twice that of normal
Exposure to non-lava liquid slowly drains your health
Chill and Cold slow you down twice as much
    20% health
    Brighter natural glow
    Western Folk
    Increased Ranged damage
Increased speed while holding a ranged weapon
Wearing Novakid vanity items in your armor slots will increase gun damage by 50%

What's the problem with Hylotl underwater cities? As far as I know they don't float in the middle of the ocean, they're on the floor. And Glitches drown to the floor. I don't see how it would make them inaccessible, unless there's some trick way to get in, in which case it can most likely be solved by a hook or a rope.

    Water Sphere?

Do I seriously have to spell this out for you? Seriously?

If glitch can't swim and they sink ;like bricks, they have no way of returning to their ship after falling to the bottom where the cities spawn. No grappling hook would let them make it back to the top and the teleport does NOT function that deep underwater.

Oh yeah sure. Make it absolutely necessary for one race. Because that's really fair isn't it?

Or you could just build a ladder, It doesn't take that long.

Or simply walk to a landmass. There's always a landmass after all.

TheNextDecade's claim about glitches sinking is a little rough, but that doesn't mean you should hate.

You could take off your EPP and drown yourself?

  17. ComatosePhoenix

actually most islands on ocean planets just float in water and dont connect to the ocean floor.

  18. RedPanda_Warrior

    RedPanda_Warrior Star Wrangler

Yes, but the other races still have disabilities.
Plus, don't target this on everybody. I also disagree with the sinking thing. Being less mobile in water is fine, but completely getting rid of swimming in water isn't.

  19. ComatosePhoenix

    ComatosePhoenix Phantasmal Quasar

Actually, I's say getting rid of swimming and giving them megaman physics in water is better than slowing them down even more. Swimming is already uncomfortably slow when looking for hylotle settings.

Nah I like it how it is, the difference in cultures is enough for me.
