Racial differences, why not?

I highly doubt the devs have much knowledge of anime at all.

And when it's balanced properly, the bonus between two races would be a matter of opinion. If the only way you can figure out how to balance something is by making everything identical, then I'm sorry, but you suck at balancing. How boring would this game be if every monster hit for the same and every weapon had the exact same effect? Variety--real variety, not just cosmetic variety--makes things fun and interesting. Stop treating it as though a tiny bit of imbalance is going to ruin the game forever.

When pvp is happening balance is a necessity. It can and will ruin a game. It really boils down to exploitation if your using exploits in single player, cool, no worries. When pvp happens everyone will pick the race with the best exploits. Now this might not ruin the game for some it will ruin the game for most. I enjoy pvp when it's nothing but skill v. skill not mod v. mod.

Oh please, as if the random item generation doesn't mean that what techs and weapons a person has is going to matter far more than the comparatively tiny racial bonuses. Because the ability to withstand cold for a little longer is going to make the difference when one guy is using a 1k damage spear and the other one has a 2k damage rocket launcher and targeted blink.

Oh I'm sorry I thought we were talking about a tiny bit of imbalance not who has the bigger gun. We were talking about how trivial balance was right? Which I brought up the point of exploitation, which if racial mods not properly implemented would be a problem.

So racial armor will also ruin the game, as they will also have the same (in your opinion) unbalanced and exploitable bonuses?

We are only talking about adding a small perk here, nothing game breaking, just for variety.

    Said no game ever.

Statistical balance is never an opinion.

Know what the most balanced games in the world are?
    Checkers. Chess.
I bet you can figure out why.

Racial armors can be produced and worn by any species.
    Racial bonuses would not.

Well maybe it's just because I don't associate this game with being PvP heavy, but I really think the differences would be insignificant except in the very early game.

How about, if in the late game, you could construct some kind of gene splicer, which allowed you to either gain more racial bonuses or just switch to a different bonus.
(for example, it wouldnt be hard to imagine a floran with an avian glide, if they evolved to have those helicopter blade seed things, or to have armor bonuses from bark, or digging faster by using thier roots etc).

All we really want is for our initial choice to have some consequence other than what you look like.

Actually im speaking of balance that's what was said that balance doesnt break the game. I merely stated for single player thats correct, but for pvp its the opposite, and your armor is a perfect example having a mod that is outside of armor but desired means you won't need to consume a slot for it. Racial armor sounds like a much better option in this reguard.

I, as someone who dislikes PvP, would like to see differences between the races before you start making racial armours. Wouldn't have to impact your PRECIOUS PVP 1000000000% BALANCEDFULNESSING, as you could add later-game equipment that acts exactly like the racial advantages, takes up its own slot, and disables the racial bonus.

In the early game, races would feel slightly different, and your choice would actually mean something. Later on, you'd be able to craft the Bonus Techs, which, as I said before, would disable your racial bonus, take up their own slot (not impacting anything else), and give you whichever one you made, or you could leave your racial bonus active if that's what you prefer.

I don't mind if some of races will have benefits over others. It will add to a replayability. This is not a mmo =_=

Pvp? PVP ? Just disable race bonuses via online play =/

    I don't understand...

Out of all the balancing concerns going on in the game, why would racial benefits even be questioned? Don't we have enough balancing issues right now? Sure in single player it might not make a big difference, but for server hosting folk like me it will only create issues. Especially in PvP. From what I understand, Starbound is about freedom and equality. By giving a race benefits over another, you create a very problematic situation where one race will be favored over others due to it's more appealing mechanics. Not to mention it would be content that is restricted to those who are playing that race. That's why racial armor exists. To give everyone a chance to try everything despite their race. Honestly, I'd rather have cosmetics looks that hold zero impact into over-all gameplay than to have an eternal struggle of balancing race locked abilities.

Keep it out of the vanilla game. If this is wanted by a majority of the community, I really hope a modder will take up the challange and not Chucklefish.

Though, importantly, not as an unchangeable setting! I play co-op with one or two friends sometimes, and that's a perfectly good place for the differences. As setting for the server owner, it's fine - I imagine PvP players will mostly stick to PvP-oriented servers, which can just have the bonuses disabled.

Actually, if you observe in Nature, it's the other way around. Birds have the sligthless problems with rain, they just do fine even in a storm. So I guess feathers are quite awesome.

Why not have both? Each race gets their own Racial Armour bonus from the off, other races have to "unlock" the other racial bonuses by crafting the armour necessary in later tiers. (with the equipped armour overriding your Innate Racial Bonus.

I personally quite like the system in place already. I prefer the only big difference between race to be architecture and culture.

I think this or the gene splicer would be perfect solutions.
I also only play coop with friends, and have no interest in PvP. This seems to be the difference between people who want perks and those who don't.

modders will almost certainly provide racial bonuses for those who want it, nothing to worry about here

I'll just make a quick list of options, and my opinions on them.
1: No inherent racial differences: Balanced for everything. Also gets a bit boring when you realize your Floran plays exactly like a Hylotl.
2: Inherent racial differences with no armour bonuses: Slightly imbalanced. Works for co-op and lone players, but not really for PvP.
3: Inherent racial differences with armour bonuses that stack: Balanced for PvP, assuming you created your character and sought out equipment specifically for their role. Which, let's face it, you didn't. Works for co-op and loners.
4: Inherent racial differences with armour bonuses that override: My personal favourite. Works for co-op and loners, and late-game PvP, but not early-game PvP (is this even a thing?).
5: Inherent racial differences with special tech that stacks and has its own slot: Pretty much the same as #3, but works a bit differently.
6: Inherent racial differences with special tech that overrides and has its own slot: Pretty much the same as #4, but again, slightly different.
7: No inherent racial differences, armour, or special tech: Your race no longer makes a difference, at all, ever. This, in my opinion, is the worst possibility.
"Install this mod" should not be a solution, as modders can and have vanished, leaving dead mods that cannot be maintained without the permission of the modder who cannot be contacted.
