Racial differences, why not?

We already have a good way.
Your race determines your knowledge of armor.

I don't want to have to choose apex over glitch just because I prefer faster movement when I also like the glitch's appearance and lore more.

Tying game mechanics to aesthetics is not a good thing, as often you either end up with a cosmetic thing you like with stats you don't, or vice versa.

I think small racial bonuses (outside of armor) would be a good design choice. I mean, why not?

Give Avis's slightly slower fall speed, fish people more breath, apex more hp, and humans better crits or something.

I hope in the future as beta progresses that CF implements or experiments with some sort of racial differences between the characters, however minute it might be. I think it would add more to the game.

Hylotls are based off of Axolotls which are pretty much salamanders, so not fish but they are aquatic. Most people would feel the need to min/max their character though so having the bonus on the armor is great in my opinion.

I wouldn't mind if we did or did not have racial bonuses in the game, but it would be pretty interesting if they did implement it....

Why would you have to miss out? You can have items that duplicate racial traits (i.e. some kind of diving suit), but Hyotls simply wouldn't need it. Racial bonuses add variety and give people incentive to try out different characters rather than going with the one they think looks prettiest.

Variety should be meaningful, but that's a problem Starbound suffers heavily with right now, with little to distinguish between a wide variety randomly generated mobs that all function pretty much the same.

If they did it, it would have to exclude any kind of bonus that could be used in combat. Some examples I can think of, off the top of my head that would be fun but not game imbalancing would be:

    Apex = gets cold slower
Avian = slightly better night vision
Floran = have greener thumbs (plants grow faster)
Glitch = don't need to air on 0 atmosphere planets
Human = super sexy (can't think of one for humans... we're boring)
Hylotl = don't need air underwater
Novakid = cost less pixels to resurrect on death

Simple stuff, but nothing extreme. Just something to set them a little more apart.

my two-cents on this whole topic: the devs don't give it out to the races at the start and keep it as passives for race specific armors that can be worn by anyone is so that there is a minimum of racism among the 6, or better known as speciesism. If its locked onto that race alone, you have a potential for heated debates between players that causes unnecessary discrimination between the various players playing the various races, basically fighting over which race is better. This often leads to some form of toxicity and cyber "bullying" So I say keep the race specific bonuses to their armors.

Come to think of it, why haven't I found any pointy orange sunglasses as a cosmetic item yet?

They would make all the races different, but people are gonna analyze it and find which bonus is better and 90% of people will only play that one race essentially killing the variety it set out to create.

I like being able to play whatever race I like more aesthetically instead of having to worry about which race is better at what.

i agree with The OP here. I think races should be substantially different, while still being reasonably balanced.

For example, the Glitch. those robot dudes. I'd like to see them have no hunger bar, but instead have a HUGE energy bar, which does not recharge on its own. They could recharge it with a chemical converter device on their ship, that would take food and charge up nearby robots.

later in the game, a craftable portable version would be nice ^^

Gliding would be a bit much for the avians, but i'd like to see them have a large wind resistance. Thusly, they'd accelerate less from gravity and be able to survive longer falls, as well as cover a little more horizontal distance.

human's evolutionary advantage (brainpower aside) has always been endurance and adaptability. Long distance running, surviving for longer without food, and enduring harsh environments more easily.

these ideas could do with some modification, but the idea is to offer a different gameplay experience with each race, to encourage replayability, and varied player parties.

Only if they suck so badly at balancing that playing one of the other races is like intentionally gimping yourself. Variety doesn't mean one race is going to be the best, for the same reason the fact that Protoss and Zerg play differently doesn't mean one of them is better. Good game devs have managed to balance out MUCH bigger differences than "glides a little" and "gets a little more energy".

I'd like minor racial bonuses, and IMO the argument "People love min-maxing, so don't make things they can min-max" doesn't really hold water to me, I think races should have notable difference aside from aesthetics simply because it makes sense and adds depth.

If we get racial Bonuses, Commence the "Which Starbound Character is Best" Threads and Youtube Videos.

If they get a perk, they're gonna have to get a disability of sorts that makes them equal, because one perk is always gonna be better for any situation.

Human= Any Perk they have would have to do with technology, which would end up being overpowered in the end.
Glitch= Anything to do with technology would end up being overpowered.
Apex= As mentioned above, the running speed would odviously be a better perk for most situations, and would make Apex the preffered class
Hylotl= How many times do you see water in this game? I hardly ever do, and if There is, I'm never in there long enough without digging in and around it.
Floran= As mentioned above, the plant growth wouldn't fit the floran or would it be that useful, Wheat already grows fast on its own, and that heals like 1/2 your hunger. It only costs 2 wheat...
Avian= Gliding would negate fall damage, and fall damage is one of the only reasons people can die in lower-threat worlds, also gliding can get you over mountains or dodge enemies with ease, making this and the Apex be 2 of the most favoured classes, as the others like floran and hylotl are left to dust. Also the Avian lore wouldn't make this possible either.
Novakid= We'll see... But any perk doing with pixel on death would make it be played more because people die alot, and they don't want to lose pixels, so it'd be the 2nd/3rd favored class.

If they added dissabilaties, I'm sure the pro's would outweigh the cons.

I'm just curious as to why does this matter? So what if one race is better at running or swimming or whatever, just pick the one you want to be better at, or pick one based on personal aesthetics, you aren't missing out on any content.
I was under the impression Starbound wasn't a primarily competitive game...

I hardly care though, even if the devs don't add racial bonuses they can be modded in.

It could be something as small as a 1% damage increase and lots of people will feel like they are ruining their character if they didn't take it.

Balance. It doesn't have to be a competitive game to retain the appearance of balance.
They could also give us planet destroying space lasers, doesn't mean they should.
